The Monto State High School U15 rugby league team won the '98 Central Queensland Broncos’ Challenge with a hard fought victory over a well drilled and highly fancied St. Brendan’s team, champions from the Rockhampton and Gladstone zones.

The Callide Valley champions won 26-16 after leading 12-10 at half time. They were best served by wide running forwards Keith Kerle and Jim Wren and solid backs Brett Avis, Ricki and Craig Dodd and Anthony Sanderson.

However it was the fine overall team performance which pleased coach Nathan Dowling and led to the victory. A number of the lesser known players, such as Owen Kavanagh and Ryan Seeds, played key roles in holding the team together for an inspiring victory.

With victories over Rockhampton, Moura, Biloela and Rockhampton North, Monto High was undefeated throughout this inaugural Broncos-sponsored competition.

The Monto U13 and Open teams were unlucky not to have made the finals. However both teams were full of young and inexperienced players who were looking forward to the 1999 championship.
