BRONCOS & COKE BACK NEW COMP

Southern Downs in 1998 instigated a seven school - five team competition in rugby league
and netball, played over five rounds. The teams were: Allora SS/ Killarney SS,
Inglewood SS/Texas SS, Assumption College, Goondiwindi SHS and Warwick SHS.

Rugby league was played in two grades: 15-16 years and 13-14 years.
Only students enrolled in Years 8 to 10 were eligible to compete.
Games were played on Wednesdays after school.
Each team had two home and two away games, with the finals played in Warwick.

Up to 150 rugby league and 100 netball players took part in the competition
each week. For many this was the only competition in their chosen sport.

Sponsorship was provided by the Brisbane Broncos and Coca Cola, and was a
major factor in the competition going ahead. Players paid only a $5 bus subsidy,
with the balance of bus and insurance costs covered by the sponsorship.
The communities of the participating schools provided the trophies.

Convenor Steve Gillespie said the competition overall was a resounding success.
He said Stanthorpe High and St Joseph’s Stanthorpe did not participate in 1998,
but will be invited to join the competition this year. If they agree, the competition
will incorporate all nine secondary schools of the Southern Downs.
