Lowood High School student Alwyn Simpson has entered the big league,
following his winning of a Brisbane Broncos’ scholarship. The 1998 Year 9
student, one of the youngest to receive the honour, was presented with his
first instalment of a $1000 cheque last year at a school assembly by Broncos’
talent scout and former assistant director of secondary education, Mr Cyril Connell.
Presenting Alwyn with his cheque and a Broncos’ tracksuit, Mr Connell said of
scholarship recipients, the selection involved assessment of the student’s character
and performance at school, as well as playing ability. He said the Broncos placed
great importance on players having a career other than football. The scholarship
will help cover Alwyn’s school and football expenses for the next few years.
Alwyn presently plays centre for Redbank Plains in the Ipswich junior league.
