DOWNS' FIVE GRAB GOLD IN MOSCOW

Clifton High’s Phillip Morwood was one of five Darling Downs’ students
to win rugby league gold with the Queensland Invitational U16 team
which triumphed at the World Youth Games in Moscow last July.
The 19-member squad won all five games by convincing margins.

Other Downs’ schoolboys to make the trip were: Nathan Volz,
St Mary’s CBC; Brett Johnson, Harristown SHS; Nathan Shatte,
Stanthorpe SHS; David O’Leary, Warwick SHS.

“Although sightseeing was restricted to Moscow, the boys thoroughly enjoyed their
three-week trip,” Clifton High teacher and QSSRL delegate Ray Pendrigh said.
Mr Pendrigh said these five players were expected to provide the
backbone of the Darling Downs open team in 1999.
