In what was considered a major
upset, Abergowrie College defeated a strong Kirwan SHS team 16-10
in the local final. Abergowrie led 10 - 0 at half time and
despite Kirwan clawing back to be 10 all with 10 minutes
remaining, Abergowrie scored again to put the result beyond
doubt.
Abergowrie were well served
by a brilliant Matthew Bowen who had defenders clutching at thin
air when he scored two 60 metre tries. He also took part in the
third try scored by his brother, Brendon.
It was a disappointment for
the Kirwan side who tried all night. There were too many
uncharacteristic handling mistakes by the team which negated any
quality time with the ball. Abergowrie will cause headaches for
all opposition they meet.
COWBOYS
CHALLENGE - Under 13 and Under 15
Ignatius Park College again displayed the quality of their junior teams when they won both the under 13 and under 15 local competions, by defeating Kirwan SHS and Ryan Catholic Community School respectively. They will now travel to Cairns to play the winner of their region.
