Selection trials
for this year's Open and Under 15 Commonwealth Bank State
Championships moved into full gear after the Easter break, with
11 of the 12 regions due to select teams of 19 players to contest
the two state carnivals.
Sunshine Coast made an
early start, naming its two teams before Easter, while Peninsula
(opens) and South West (both teams) named their squads for the
carnivals after the break. These teams are listed in this update.
Defending open champions
Peninsula have been disadvantaged in their preparations by the
incredibly wet season in the far north (see Peninsula Report).
Also likely to be affected by the recent rains are defending
Under 15 champs Northern region, based in Townsville.
This year's carnivals:
Opens - Kougari Oval,
Wynnum
20 - 23 May
Under 15s - Browne Park,
Rockhampton 27 - 30 May
Star Brisbane Broncos' fullback Darren Lockyer will open the Wynnum carnival. Darren is a former Queensland and Australian Schoolboy. He played for South West region in the state championships at Bundaberg in 1993 and Kawana in 1994.
