Captain Luke Turnbull completed a grand schoolboy rugby league career by leading from the front as Bundaberg High continued their domination of the Bundaberg & District Secondary Schools open division with a 36-8 grand final victory over Gin Gin last August.

The match drew the curtain on a wet Alan Powell Ford Winter Sports Series grand final day and despite the conditions, some great skills were showcased, especially by Bundaberg High.

While Turnbull had his state dreams cruelly shattered when injured in the first minute of the QSSRL open championships at Townsville in May, the win completed a decorated five-year school stint for the dynamic lock.

He has featured in premiership-winning Bundaberg High sides in each of his five years at the school, including in the open division for the past three years.

While he scored only the first try in their seven-try romp, Turnbull was always creative in attack and his defence was at times brutal.

“It is good stuff to finish on a winning note and everyone played their part - there was a lot of good defence from the likes of Steven Hucker and Josh May, and we ran well out wide with Lindsey Medley, Ryan McLardy and Wade McDougall doing the damage,” he said.

Luke hopes to pursue a career in rugby league.
