Hierro is a defender but even so has managed to score (31.08.2001) 27 for country and 98 Primera league goals.

Tall and powerful, he is a defensive lynchpin but sometimes plays a supporting role in midfield for Spain. Controlling matters at the back, Hierro is the tower on which the Real defence is built. Has a powerful shot from free-kicks and is useful with his head at set pieces. Captain of Real Madrid when Manuel Sanchis is absent. Surname means iron in Spanish.

When he arrived to Madrid from Real Valladolid in 1989 he was a promising central defender with very long legs. Normally he plays in the central defense, but he has also done very important things playing on the midfield. In 1992 he scored 21 goals in just one championship. His right foot is skillful and powerful, he always jumps just in time and he knows how to control his team, both Real Madrid and Spain.

Hierro is not technical, but he knows where to place himself and when to give the ball. He has been fundamental in Real Madrid. He is one of those players that will never be called "Phenomenon" but he’s got an incredible continuity.

Played for spain in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

Hierro equalled Butragueño's record of 26 national side goals, and has gone 1 clear to put himself alone on the goalscoring throne with 27 goals. Hierro broke Spanish coach José Antonio Camacho 2nd spot record for most matches for Spain (81 caps), Only Andoni Zubizarreta is better with a massive 126.
