Full name: Fernando Morientes Sánchez Nick name: El Moro Date of Birth: April 5, 1976 Birthplace: Sonseca (Toledo), Spain Status: Married, two children (Fernando, Lucia) Height: 185 cm Weight: 78 kg Position: Forward Official Website: http://www.icons.com/es/morientes/ Unofficial Websites: http://rapun.hypermart.net/morientes.htm Contract expiry: 2006 Previous Clubs: Albacete (1993-1995), Real Zaragoza (1995-1997) A billion peseta ($6.6 million) signing from Real Zaragoza during the '97 off-season. After a series of minor injuries during the pre-season Morientes blossomed, forcing Davor Suker out of the side, and was the revelation of Real Madrid for the '97-98 season. Won Spanish international honours, with his natural flair and cool head in front of goal. His form and confidence dived at the start of the '98-99 season but he recovered his form to notch 17 goals in the last 19 games. As a result, Real Madrid have jacked up the buy-out clause in his' contract to a massive 15,000 million pesetas ($94.22 million) in a bid to ward off potential suitors. "At Real Madrid everything is big, huge," says Morientes. "But I was never afraid because everybody treated me well. I was perhaps afraid of not measuring up to people's expectations. But I also assumed that if Real's board of directors spent so much money on me, then they must appreciate my work. I love Real and everything it stands for. Playing here is every young football player's dream. I take advantage of the fact that I when I wear this jersey, it allows me to chase many titles. On the pitch I am an untirable warrior, but once the game is over I just try to be Fernando Morientes. Since I've begun playing here, I have lost all privacy. In Albacete and Zaragoza, everything was calm when I walked in the street, nobody came up to me. Now it has become very difficult, but I am absolutely not complaining. I knew what a contract with Real can lead to. At Real, I am on top of the hill. To be number one in the world is not an obsession for me. My goal is to perfect my style, improve my efficiency and win titles." Morientes made an extraordinary Spanish debut against Sweden in March '98 with two goals in the first five minutes. Skilful on the ground and a good header of the ball, Morientes says, "I like to receive the ball with my back to the keeper and look for a teammate on a dribble. I'm very comfortable in the penalty area and its whereabouts. I like scoring headers, too". Often wears red boots. Morientes extended his contract until 2006 during the pre-season of 2001. Morientes became only the second player in Real Madrid's history to score 5 times in one game, he scored 5 goals in the game against Las Palmas on the 09.02.2002 at Santiago Bernabeu. Ference Puskas was the player that managed this feature first by scoring 5 times against Elche in the 1960/61 season. Morientes could actually have scored 6 times in the match but missed a penalty in the 88 minute of the game.
