The warrior stopped at the edge of the woods to pick some wild flowers for the bard. She had waited so long for this moment. Everything had to be perfect. As she rummaged through the bushes, searching for the perfect color combination in the dark, she began to sense that she was not alone.
"Are you really such a fool that you would welcome her back into your arms even after her little rendezvous with the Amazon woman?"
"Mind your own business, Callisto. I dont have time to play with you tonight," the warrior spoke as she continued her search.
"I guess its true then...the Warrior Princess intends to settle for left overs. Sloppy seconds. Damaged goods. Tsk tsk," the goddess smirked.
"Im not settling for anything. As usual, it seems Im getting exactly what I want. You hate it when that happens, dont you?," the warrior puckered her lips, blowing a contemptuous kiss in Callistos direction. "Not even the goddess of...whatever is going to get to me tonight. Gotta run!"
"Dont come crying to me when she infects you with some vile disease!," the furious goddess departed in a ball of fire.

Gabrielle lifted her head when she heard the soft knock at the door. "Xena!," she assumed, as she jumped up from the bed. "Oh...come in," the disheartened bard muttered upon opening the door to find Charis on the other side.
"Try not to be so enthusiastic, Gabrielle. I wouldnt want you to strain yourself," Charis teased, sensing her disappointment.
"Im sorry, Charis. I just thought...I was expecting...nevermind."
"Whats going on tonight? I just saw Eph...," she realized she had just put her foot in her mouth. "Gabrielle? Whats wrong?"
"I cant talk about it right now," the bard sighed, sitting down in the chair across from her.
"Well...if you change your mind...please let me know if theres anything I can do to help. ok?," she urged, covering the bards hand with her own. "Would you like me to stay with you for a while?"
"No, Ill be fine," she attempted a smile, but couldnt quite carry it through.
"Ill be in my hut if you need me. Try to get some sleep?," Charis suggested as she reached for the latch on the door.
"I wouldnt leave just yet. The nights still young," Ares intruded, leaning against the wall, sword in hand.
"What are you doing here?," Charis demanded. Aware that the God of War was behind Draco and Allmars attack on her queen, she had reflexively grabbed the bards staff and moved in front of her.
"Im on a mission," the god informed the Amazon as he looked her up and down.
"You have no business
here," Charis maintained. "Leave us before..."
"Before what?," Ares scoffed.
"Ares, I dont know what you want from me. But, if youre looking for Xena, shes not here anymore," the bard insisted.
"Who said anything about Xena? Actually, Gabrielle...I came for you," the god declared.
"If you want her, youll have to go through me," Charis lunged at him.
Gabrielle covered her mouth with her hand in disbelief, horrified at the sight of Ares sword tearing into her friends gut. Displaying the now bloody sword in front of her face, the god said only, "Lets go," before grabbing her arm and disappearing, taking the bard with him.
* * * * * * * *
The warriors heart skipped a beat as she approached the hut. "Its going to be fine. Shell listen to me," she told herself over and over again. She spoke softly as she opened the door, "Gabrielle?" She waited for the bard to answer, but heard nothing. Her heart sank when she realized she wasnt there. Deciding to wait inside for her return, she opened the door the rest of the way and entered. "Charis?... Charis?!," she shouted as she rushed to the injured Amazons side, dropping the flowers she held in her hand. "Gods, come on, Charis. Wake up," she pleaded as she rolled the fallen woman onto her back.
"Xen...," Charis gasped.
"Charis, wheres Gabrielle?," the warrior frantically asked, hoping to get an answer before she slipped back into unconsciousness.
"A...," the Amazon tried to speak.
"Where is she, Charis?"
"Ares," she muttered.
The warrior, realizing the severe nature of the Amazons injury, cut off the flow of blood to her wound with a swift touch of her hand. "Amazons!," she shouted again and again in an attempt to wake everyone she possibly could.
Talin arrived first, wearing one boot and carrying the other along with her sword. "What happened here?" She was obviously shocked by the sight of the bloody Amazon. "Get me some bandages, a needle and some leather twine. Have someone start a fire and find Ephiny," the warrior ordered. By the time she finished her sentence, six women were handing her supplies while the others readied the fire and sent for the Regent.
Ephiny bolted through the door, immediately covering her mouth and running back outside at the sight of Charis bloodied body. Slumping over, her arms folded over her abdomen, tears of rage poured down her cheeks as she heaved in the bushes. Her stomach finally emptied, she ran back inside the hut.
"Who did this to her?!," she demanded, beads of sweat forming on her forehead as anger surmounted the rest of her emotions.
"Ephiny, I need you to clear this room and help me with her. Shes in really bad shape," Xena requisitioned.
"Xena, wheres Gabrielle?," she asked in a panic.
"Im not sure. Now hurry!"
The Regent closed the door behind the last to leave the hut, ordering the rest of the Amazons to stay close. "What do you need me to do?," she asked the warrior as she knelt down on the floor next to her butchered friend.
"Ephiny...the sword pierced one of her lungs. We may be too late and, if we are, shes not going to make it," Xena told her.
"Tell me what to do," the Amazon felt a wave of terror wash over her.
The warrior worked diligently trying to close the wounds. Ephiny did her best to assist as reflections of the past filled her head. Images of the bard intermingled with pictures of her first love, seizing her mind. It was bad enough that Gabrielles whereabouts were unknown. But as she fought, along with the warrior, to save her friends life, Ephiny found herself unable to fathom living a life without Charis in it. They had been through so much together, shared so much. Their mothers had raised them together, taught them the Amazon ways together. Side by side, they had learned what it meant to be women, Amazons, human beings. The thought of losing her was more than she could bear.
When the last stitch was complete, Ephiny apprehensively addressed the warrior, "What are her chances?"
"Not good. Shes lost a lot of blood, Ephiny. I dont know if I got to her in time."
The Amazon, feeling her legs starting to betray her, slumped into the chair. "Xena, who did this to her? And where is Gabrielle? Gods, Xena, is she ok?," her fear was evident.
"The only thing I know is that this has something to do with Ares."
"Ares? Why would Ares...Damn him!"
"Why does Ares do anything he does?," the warrior became exasperated as she recognized her own powerless state. She didnt know where the bard could be or whether or not she was even alive. "I couldve prevented this from happening if Id just stayed here," she directed her anger toward herself.
"We have to figure out whats going on, Xena. You have to keep your mind clear. Theres no time for guilt now. We have to find Gabrielle" the Amazon tried to focus, despite the panic growing inside her.
"Hes holding the Queen in a cave near the top of Mount Larius," a soft voice rang in the womens ears.
"Ephiny, did you...," Xena was bewildered.
"Artemis?," the Amazon spoke in a hushed tone, turning to face the direction from which the voice was coming.
"You can save her," the moon goddess was now seated on the bed next to Charis, gently stroking the wounded Amazons cheek. "But it wont be easy."
"Tell us how. And how do we get to Gabrielle?," Xena seemed at once skeptical and hopeful as she addressed the goddess.
"Youll need two things to save her," the goddess glanced at Charis. "First, youll need to go see the oracle, Sanshee. She is the only human in this area with access to rahfka..."
"Rahfka?," Xena inquired.
"Its a healing herb, long extinct in its natural state. Only a few have managed to preserve it. Sanshee is one of those few."
"What do we do with it once we have it?," Ephiny anxiously asked.
"Once you have acquired the herb, you must face the more difficult challenge. Charis was stabbed by the sword of Ares. Only that same sword can return her to you. You must retrieve it."
"Wait," Ephinys tone revealed her concern. "How are we supposed to get the God of Wars sword away from him?"
"That is for you to decide," the goddess responded. "But there is a catch..."
"Why am I not surprised?," Xena interjected.
"Find Gabrielle and youll have a chance to retrieve the sword. Ares is expecting you, Xena. But you must enter the cave alone. Anyone who follows you will perish. If you fail your task, the Queen will pay the price with her life and you, warrior, will pay with your soul. Youll know what you have to do when you arrive at the cave. Once you have the sword, you must cover the blade with the rahfka and use it to pierce Charis heart. This must be done before the moon appears in the sky three nights from now. Otherwise, your friend is lost forever."
"Pierce her heart?," the Amazon questioned before realizing that Artemis was gone.
"Just like a god. She appears out of nowhere and then disappears before we have a chance to ask any questions," Xena was obviously annoyed.
Ephiny, having been raised to revere Artemis, rolled her eyes and groaned at the warrior. "Xena, Id suggest we collect our supplies and get moving."
"I didnt mean to insult you," Xena recognized her faux pas. "Its just that Ive found the gods to be..."
"Xena...," the Amazons eyes narrowed, signaling the warrior not to go any further.
"Oh, come on," she grabbed Ephinys hand and pulled her out of her chair.
* * * * * * * *
The Amazon and the warrior were still riding when the morning sun made its appearance. Ephinys mind shifted between thoughts of her queen and thoughts of Charis. She had a hard time leaving her fallen friend in such a state, but without the herb and the sword, there was no hope. She had posted guards in and around the hut, yet she knew they would be of little use if faced with the God of War. She could only hope that she and the warrior would return in time to save her.
Xena rode alongside the Amazon, her own mind plagued with worry. She had come so close to the happiness that had seemed to elude her for so long. So close to finally having the only thing that had ever meant anything to her, besides Solan. And now, if she failed, she might lose Gabrielle for good. "There. Straight ahead," she pointed to a small hut nestled in the trees. "Thats it." The two women nudged their horses and, within moments, they arrived outside the hut.
"Just so youll know, shes a bit eccentric," the warrior warned Ephiny as they approached the door.
"Yeah, I gathered that," she replied, pointing to the hundreds of bat wings tacked to the side of the hut.
"What do you want?!," the elderly lady screeched as she opened the door.
"Sanshee, we need your help. Our friend is dying...," Xena immediately began explaining.
"Xena!," the old woman was delighted to see the warrior. "You know Ill help you any way I can but you also know I aint no healer."
"You dont understand...," Xena attempted to continue.
"Tartarus if I dont!," the oracle, experiencing some sort of revelation, suddenly erupted. "Your friend has fallen at the hands of Ares, God of War, hasnt she?"
"Thats right! We need...I mean she needs...," Ephiny spoke ardently.
"You need rahfka," the woman stated.
"Yes, Sanshee," Xena interrupted. "We need the rahfka to save her life. Can you please help us?"
"To tell you the truth, not many know I have the herb. Ive tried my best to keep it quiet. You know how folks can be. But...," her voice reduced to a whisper. "I can spare some for you, Xena. I told you long ago to come to me if you ever needed anything. I meant it."
With that, the old woman shuffled out of sight, disappearing behind a garish curtain, the back of her flowing pink dress trailing along behind her. "She seems to like you," Ephiny addressed the warrior once Sanshee was gone.
"Yes...she does. We have a history."
"What..."
"I tended to her son many years ago," Xena answered before Ephiny could finish her question. "He was near death after a band of thieves attacked him. She was taking him to see a healer when I came across them on the road. He wouldnt have made it in time. I managed to save him."
"No wonder," the Amazon thought aloud, a smile surfacing as Xenan crossed her mind. She wandered around the room, taking in her bizarre surroundings. Upon coming across a strange looking, oblong object, she held it up and asked the warrior, "What could she possibly use this for?"
"Actually, I asked her the same question once," Xena answered. "Its petrified donkey dung."
The Amazon abruptly dropped the item back onto the table where she had found it. "And its purpose?"
"It has no purpose. She just likes the way it looks. Although, she told me shes used it once or twice to quell her sexual desires," the warrior chuckled.
"You are sick!," the Amazon laughed.
"I have many tasteless jokes. For instance, how many Hestian Virgins does it take to light a candle?"
"Dont tell me. I dont want to know."
"Alright, but its your loss," Xena grinned.
"Ill get over it," the Amazon shook her head, amused by the warriors antics.
"Here it is," Sanshee reemerged carrying a small black pouch. "Take care of it. It will take some time to replenish. So I wont have more to spare for some time."
"Thank you, Sanshee. We will. I owe you," the warriors gratitude was apparent.
"My son is alive and well, Xena. You owe me nothing," she replied. "Now go to your friend. But be careful. I sense danger ahead."
"Thank you so much," Ephiny placed her hand on the womans shoulder.
"Your love is counting on you, child," the oracle professed, looking into the Amazons eyes.
Xena glanced at the Regent, recognizing her heartache. Putting an arm around her waist, she whispered, "Lets go." She hated knowing that Ephiny was hurting. She just wished there was some way to make this easier for her. The warrior understood the pain of losing the one you love. In fact, that familiar feeling was beginning to resurface inside her. She had to find Gabrielle before it was too late.
* * * * * * * *
"The horses need to rest and so do we. Wed better make camp," the warrior suggested. "Mount Larius is just across the valley. I can see its peak from here. It will be best if we travel the rest of the way by daylight. The terrain is rugged and Id like to see where Im going."
"I hate to stop, but I guess youre right," Ephiny agreed. "Well head out early in the morning."
"So, which would you rather do, catch dinner or cook it?"
"I prefer to hunt, but I can do both," the Amazon answered.
"Well, if you really want to eat tonight, you might not want me to do the cooking," Xena warned.
"Looks like Im cooking," Ephiny responded as she unpacked her satchel. "Ill have the fire going by the time you get back."
"I wont be too long. Hey? Did you think to bring something to cook in? You know, a pot or pan or...something?"
"Actually, I was counting on roasted rabbit. Think you can manage?"
"One rabbit comin up," Xena announced before heading into the woods. Within seconds, she returned. "Your dinner," she said as she presented the rabbit to the Amazon. "Now, wheres that fire you promised?"
"Who knew youd return so quickly?," Ephiny was clearly impressed by the warriors expeditious efforts.
The two women inhaled the entire rabbit and settled next to the fire where they began to sharpen their swords. "Ive been wondering how Xenan is doing, considering what he was forced to go through recently," the warrior inquired, making reference to the havoc the child witnessed at the hands of Hope and Callisto.
"Hes doing very well. Hes with Phantes family. After...after everything that happened, I thought it best that he spend some time with them. He needs to get to know them, to understand them. I think its important that he understands what it means to be a Centaur. And since he cant be with me, for a while anyway--as long as I remain in the village, I thought it best that he spend days learning about his heritage. I have to be with my sisters right now. I need them and Id like to think that they need me."
This was the first time Xena had inquired about Xenan since she had arrived in the village. The Amazon was surprised to hear the warrior mention the events that had led to the death of her son.
"Hes destined for greatness, you know," Xena smiled.
"You think so?"
"I know so. Hes got a great mother, doesnt he?"
"I try, but I know I make mistakes," she replied, appreciative of Xenas compliment.
"We all make mistakes," the warrior sighed. "I miss him, Ephiny," she confessed, thoughts of Solan playing on her mind.
"I know you do," she laid down her sword and moved closer to her friend.
"Not a day passes that I dont think of him. Wish I could tell him about something Ive seen or something thats happened. Wish I could see his smile, hear his laughter," Xena confessed, a single tear escaping the corner of her eye.
"He can hear your thoughts. He knows how you feel," the Amazon attempted to comfort her.
"He was going to travel with
us and then Hope..."
"He travels with you now in your memories and in your heart. And he always will."
"He said something to me, Ephiny. That day on the mountain...he said hes proud that Im his mother," the warrior fought back her tears. The Amazon, on the other hand, allowed her own to fall freely.
"Those are words that every mother wants to hear. Unfortunately, few of us ever do."
"Im sorry to go on and on," Xena abruptly pulled herself together and began to spread her bedroll over the ground.
"No, Xena. I dont mind. Im happy to listen," the Amazon reassured her as she dried her own eyes.
"Goodnight, Ephiny," the warrior said before crawling under her blanket.
"Goodnight."
The two women had only been asleep for a short while when Xena heard something she couldnt quite make out. Still half asleep, she slowly sat up, looking around for the source of the sound. Looking over at Ephiny, she noticed the Amazons body shaking. As she made her way over to the quivering pile of blankets, she realized that the noise she had heard was the sound of her friend crying. "Ephiny?," she put her hand on her back.
"Go back to sleep. Im fine," the Amazon insisted.
"Youre not fine," she pulled the blankets back revealing Ephinys face.
"Im sorry, Xena. I just...I..."
"Theres no need to explain," the warrior whispered as she crawled under the blankets with her. Putting her arm around her, she moved closer until her body was pressed against Ephinys back. "Youre going to need your rest," she reminded her, running her fingers through her hair in an attempt to lull her into sleep.
Ephiny woke to find Xena draped across her body. As she lay there staring up at the early morning sky, she heard the sound of horses approaching. "Xena. Xena, wake up. Someones coming," she attempted to rouse her sleeping friend. The groggy warrior reached for her chakram and then slouched back onto the Amazons chest. "It sounds like whoever it is will be here any second," she yawned.
"And that doesnt concern you?"
"There are only two of them and Ive got more important things on my mind. Wake me when they get here," she said as she closed her eyes.
"Umm...Xena? Theyre here," Ephiny informed her as she stared up at the two thugs standing over them, swords drawn.
"Two of them. Two of us. Could turn out to be an interesting morning after all," the larger of the men sneered.
The warrior yawned again as she lifted her head. "Sorry, but were not interested. As you can plainly see, were quite content with each other ," she told them before laying a huge kiss on the unsuspecting Amazon.
"Im sure we could squeeze two more in that bedroll if we try," the smaller man suggested as though he actually thought they might consider it.
"Im sure I could squeeze your head into your trousers if I tried. Want to give it a shot?" Ephiny, still dazed by the kiss, covered her face with the blanket as she began to laugh at Xenas last remark.
"Im gonna slit your throat!," the man exclaimed, causing the Amazon to laugh even harder.
"Well, I tried. But you boys just arent going to cooperate," Xena stated as she bounced her chakram off a nearby tree, giving herself just enough time to punch both men in the face before her weapon returned, cutting their swords in half.
The two women chuckled at the sight of the two brutes running into the woods cupping their bloodied noses in their hands, the horses they had arrived on trailing behind them. "Not bad. Now do you want to get off me or do you have other plans?," Ephiny couldnt resist razzing the warrior.
"That depends on whether or not youre hiding the petrified donkey dung in here," Xena grinned as she peeked under the covers.
The two women ate their morning meal quickly, readied their horses, and set out shortly after sunrise. The good-natured banter that had started their day quickly gave way to pensive silence as they approached Mount Larius. "I have to enter the cave alone," the warrior thought aloud.
"If anyone can bring her out of there, you can. Be careful, Xena. Remember what Artemis told you." But the warrior didnt need to be reminded. She couldnt get it out of her mind. She could stand to lose her soul, but she knew she could never live with herself if she failed to save the bard.
"Ephiny, stay here with the horses," she instructed her friend as they reached the treacherous incline leading to the cave. "And take care of this," she said, handing the Amazon the pouch containing the rahfka. "And, if theres any trouble outside the cave..."
"Ill handle it," the Amazon, seeming to read her mind, assured her. "Good luck. And Xena? Thanks...for last night," she managed a subtle smile in spite of her fear. Silently, she pray as she watched the warrior climb hand over hand up the incline.
* * * * * * * *
Xena could see light ahead. The orange glow glanced off the damp walls of the cave, illuminating her path. When she reached the end of the narrow tunnel, she found herself in a large open area, surrounded by torches which were mounted on the wall. "Welcome, Xena. Hope youre finding the atmosphere to your liking," Ares appeared seated on a rock in the middle of the stone room.
"Its lovely. Now wheres Gabrielle?," the warrior grumbled.
"Not so fast. First, we negotiate."
"So, start negotiating."
"The way I see it, we both have something the other wants. You want Gabrielle and, oh yes, my sword. And I...well, Xena, I want you."
"Let me guess. You want me to lead your bloodthirsty army in battle?," the warrior sounded bored.
"I prefer to call them ambitious."
"Get to the point, Ares."
"The point is that your precious Gabrielle is that way," he pointed to the tunnel behind him. "Your main concern is that Im the only thing standing between you. But there are a few other problems which you may want to consider."
"Im listening," the warrior responded, awaiting the opportunity to get her hands on the god. She had been hoping for the chance to repay him for the pain he had caused the bard.
"First, you ought to know that for every minute you spend inside this cave, ten minutes pass on the outside of it. And next...I said Gabrielle was that way. However, I didnt say she was...how should I put this? Intact," he gloated.
"You worthless bastard!," she shouted as she charged at him, plunging her sword into his abdomen.
"Ouch," Ares, unaffected, scoffed at her efforts.
The god then drew his own sword, tossing it from one hand to the other, spinning it from side to side in an attempt to intimidate the warrior. Xena offset his display with one of her own. With a snide smile on her face, she effectively countered each of his strikes. "Youve yet to agree to my terms," Ares reminded her as he jabbed at her thigh. Jumping over his sword, she replied, "Ill lead your bloody army if I lose. But I wouldnt hold my breath if I were you. Ayiyiyiyiyi!," her war cry bounced off the frigid stone, resounding through the tunnels as she vaulted into the air. She landed on a ledge above the entrance to the tunnel which would presumably lead her to the bard. As she attempted to swing through the passage, Ares grabbed hold of her hair, propelling her backward to the other side of the cave. So consumed by her rage and desperation, she failed to notice that she had sliced her arm open when she slammed into the wall.
The warrior stood in silence, glaring into the gods eyes. And then, without warning, sent her chakram soaring through the air. Holding her breath, she watched it ricochet from one side of the cave to the other before, at last, reaching its destination. The cavern began to rumble, releasing the large slabs of rock which had been dangling just above the gods head. Just before the falling rubble pinned him under its weight, the warrior snapped her whip. When Ares was no longer in sight, hidden from view under the debris, Xena tugged at her whip. Unable to see the end of it, she could only hope. "Yes!," she blurted out when she saw that she had managed to snare the gods sword. "Thanks for the workout!," she mocked her opponent as she made her way around the massive pile of stones which covered him.
She ran through the dark tunnel so fast her legs were beginning to cramp. Her head began to spin when she spotted her love tied to a boulder with her back facing her. She talked to the bard as she rushed to her side. "I was afraid Id never see you again. Im going to get you out of here, but we have to hurry...Gabrielle? Gabrielle?," her exuberant tone quickly diminished when she noticed the blood running down Gabrielles side. She desperately pleaded with the unconscious bard as she examined her wound. It didnt take long for Xena to recognize that this wound was identical to the one Charis had received. "Damn you, Ares!," she shouted as she bolted toward the caves exit.
Finally outside, she found herself barely able to catch her breath. "Ephiny!," she managed to call out to the Amazon. Ephinys heart pounded when she saw the distraught warrior standing on the cliff...without Gabrielle. "Whats wrong?!," she anxiously responded. "Rahfka! I need the rahfka!," Xena yelled. Sensing that there was no time to spare, the Amazon tied the pouch containing the herb to an arrow and sent it soaring through the air toward her. The arrow flawlessly made its way to its mark, landing at the warriors feet. Xena, bending down to retrieve the pouch, saw the Amazon hastily attempting to make her way up the mountain. "Ephiny, dont follow me!," she ordered, taking heed of the instructions Artemis had given them. "I have to do this alone!," she shouted as she ran back inside the cave.
The Amazon paced back and forth talking to herself. "Gods, shes got to be alright. Ill never forgive myself if...No, Ephiny, shes fine. She has to be," she tried to convince herself. "And Charis...the gods be with her. We have to make it back in time."
Inside the cave, the warrior held the God of Wars sword above her head, both hands firmly gripping the weapon. She screamed in anguish as she drove the herb-covered blade into Gabrielles heart. She held her love in her arms, watching in horror as the life drained out of her. When the bard ceased to breath, she pulled her closer, begging her not to leave her. Just as she began to lose hope, Gabrielle opened her eyes. "Xena?," she was disoriented. The warrior, relieved, began to smother her loves face with kisses. "Where am I?," the bard asked in a hushed tone.
"Long story. We have to go. Ill explain on the way," Xena was suddenly reminded of her mission. "Can you walk?"
"Can I walk?," Gabrielle looked puzzled.
"Look at yourself. Youre...," she paused, noticing that the bards wound was gone and her clothes had been restored. The rips and the blood that had been there only moments before had somehow disappeared. "Wow. That rahfkas powerful stuff," she noted as she helped Gabrielle to her feet.
"Rahfka? Xena, what are you talking about?," Gabrielles confusion was steadily expanding.
"Come on. Theres no time. And stay close to me."
"No problem there," her response sparked a smile on the warriors face.
* * * * * * * *
"Xena, what happened to your arm?," the bard had a concerned look on her face.
"Ares and I had it out...again," she answered.
"Ares...he...Charis! Xena, he killed her!," Gabrielle panicked, beginning to remember the events which had taken place before the god abducted her.
"Shes not dead," the warrior assured her. "But we dont have much time to save her. Theres the passage that leads to the outside." The two made their way out of the cave. As she stood on the ledge overlooking the valley, Xena thought aloud, "Its nearly dusk. We only have another day to get the sword and the rahfka back to the village."
"Gabrielle!," Ephiny shouted upon seeing her friend descending the cliff with the warrior. The bard was so happy to see her that she nearly lost her grip on the rope which supported her. When she finally reached the ground, the Amazon clutched her so tightly that the Queen was barely able to breathe. Opening her eyes mid-embrace, Gabrielle caught a glimpse of Xena over Ephinys shoulder. Her heart skipped a beat as she remembered what had happened in the village the last time she had seen her and the Regent together. "Did you two...did you explain...does she understand?," she stumbled over her words.
"Yes, Gabrielle. Ephiny explained everything," the warrior informed her.
"Everything?," the bard looked nervous.
"Everything," Xena reiterated. "Theres nothing to be concerned about," she looked into her loves eyes, placing a hand on her shoulder.
As they traveled, Gabrielle listened while Xena conveyed their predicament to her. The three women kept moving through most of the night, stopping only briefly for the sake of their horses. Though she preferred to walk, the bard was forced to ride with the warrior in the interest of time.
Xenas mind was racing, overflowing with concern for Charis, but also with thoughts of the woman sitting so closely behind her. Though she had never admitted it to Gabrielle, she enjoyed it when the bard rode with her. The warmth of her arms around her waist. The feel of her breath against her neck. The smell of her skin. The sound of her voice. She adored her...and soon she would make sure she knew it.
"Xena? How many Hestian Virgins does it take to light a candle?," the Amazon asked out of the blue.
"None," the warrior grinned. "Hestian Virgins arent allowed to have candles."
"Huh?," Gabrielle uttered as Ephiny shook her head.
"Think shape, Gabrielle," Xena chuckled at the bards naiveté.
"Oh!," she suddenly exclaimed after a moment of deliberation.
Ephiny glanced at the warrior as she began to recognize the mistake she had just made in raising the issue of virginity. Xenas demeanor quickly transformed itself when she realized that the bard had suddenly grown silent. Gabrielle wrestled with herself, trying not to think about that day in the cabin, making an effort to focus on the words Ephiny had once said to her. She knew she hadnt submitted herself to the warlords. Yet she couldnt help but wonder whether or not the warrior, knowing what had happened, would somehow be turned off by her. "Are you ok?, Xena softly asked, sensing Gabrielles dismal state. "Im sorry if I..., "she attempted to apologize. "Dont worry about it," the bard cut the her off. Affectionately tightening her grip on the warriors waist, she whispered in her ear, "Im fine. Really." But Xena knew she wasnt. She knew she was struggling w
"Xena? Did...where did you take Draco and Allmar?," Gabrielle cringed as she said their names.
"I took...care of them," the warrior told her, hoping she wouldnt ask anymore questions about their demise.
"Oh...," the bards voice dissolved into silence.
"Wed better pick up the pace," Xena told Ephiny, her mind once again centered on their primary objective. Gabrielle, still immersed in her own thoughts, grabbed the warriors waist as the sudden increase in speed propelled her backwards.
"Would you mind warning me the next time you plan to gallop?!," she shouted in Xenas ear.
"Gabrielle?," Xenas tone took a sarcastic turn. "Were going to go faster now," she grinned.
"Thanks for the tip," she responded, playfully swatting the warrior in the back of the head.
* * * * * * * *
The three women arrived in the village just before nightfall. "Talin!," the Regent called out to the Amazon standing next to the stables. "Take care of the horses," she ordered as she jumped from her horse and began to run toward Gabrielles hut, rahfka in hand. Xena, not wanting to waste any time, flipped head over heels off Argos back, taking the bard with her. "What are you doing?! Xenaaa!," Gabrielle yelled as she found herself spinning in mid-air.
"How is she?," the Regent hesitantly inquired upon entering the hut, the warrior and the bard following close behind her.
"Theres been no change, Ephiny," Eponin was notably concerned.
Xena prepared the sword, coating the blade with the rahfka, before telling the other women to step back. "No," Ephiny placed her hand on the warriors. "I have to do it," she told her.
"Eph...," Xena began.
"Xena, I have to do this," the Amazon insisted.
"Take it," she reluctantly handed Ephiny the sword and backed away.
The Regents hands trembled as she aimed the point of the sword at her friends chest. "Artemis, be with you," she whispered as she plunged it into her flesh. The women watched in horror as blood streamed across the floor and under their boots. Within seconds, Charis stopped breathing and her skin became ashen. "Xena?," the fearful Amazon looked up at the warrior as she held her departed friend in her arms.
"It takes some time," Xena assured her, recalling the terror she had experienced in the cave when Gabrielles body ceased to function.
Moment after moment passed and still Charis slept. "Ephiny?," Xena spoke in a hushed tone as she sat next to her on the bed. "Its been too long. It didnt work," tears filled her eyes as she acknowledged defeat.
"No!," the Amazon started to scream. "She cant be gone! Wake up! The gods, Charis, wake up!," she held on tightly to her friends icy body.
"Let her go," the warrior whispered as she and Eponin attempted to pry Ephinys arms from the fallen Amazon.
"Why?!," the Regent lamented as she buried her head in Xenas chest.
"Im so sorry," Gabrielle wrapped her arms around both her and the warrior.
"Whats going on? What happened?," Charis slowly sat up on the bed.
"Charis!," the Amazon exclaimed, lunging at her, knocking her onto her back. "Thank the gods!," she screamed again as she clung to her friend.
"Ephiny? What have you been smoking?," the disconcerted woman asked. "You want to let me up so I can get some water? Im about to die of thirst here."
"Oh, yeah. Water. Ill get the water!" Ephiny was suddenly exhilarated as she scurried around the hut, hugging everyone in the room along the way.
"Whats gotten into her?," Charis asked the warrior. Eponin, not knowing what to make of the Regents peculiar behavior, responded by shrugging her shoulders.
"Im sure shell tell you everything later," Xena sighed in relief.
"Heres your water!," Ephiny loudly announced upon returning to the bedside.
"Uh...thanks. And I...uh...love your new enthusiastic attitude," she grinned at the Regent.
"And I love you!," the Amazon exclaimed, placing a wet kiss on her friends forehead.
"Xena, just tell me one thing. Is it the furies?," Charis inquired, still trying to figure out what was behind the Regents bizarre behavior.
"No, shes not crazy," Xena chuckled. "I guess we should explain."
The warrior and the bard told Charis of the events which had taken place over the past three days. Ephiny, in her jovial state, took it upon herself to clean the hut. Though she managed to spruce the place up a bit, she spent most of her time twirling around the middle of the room, dancing with the broom, much to the amusement of the other women. "Im gonna give her Tartarus about this tomorrow," Charis grinned at Xena as the Regent skipped by them whistling the Amazon celebration song.

Ephiny and Charis watched through the window as the sun began to appear from behind the dark sky. "Just like the old days," Charis noted, referring to the fact that the two had stayed up all night talking. They had watched the sun rise together many times in the past. Lost in conversation, submerged in their youthful adoration, forsaking sleep for communion.
"Yeah...the old days," Ephinys mind journeyed back in time as she spoke.
"Whats that look?," Charis was curious as to why her friend appeared to be a thousand miles away.
"I...," she paused, surprised by the thoughts descending on her mind. She had the most vivid image of her companion in her head. An image of her first love looking up at her, their bodies intertwined. "I was remembering the first time we made love," she looked down as she confessed.
"It was momentous, wasnt it," Charis smiled. "I think about those days often. Seeing you the way I do...every day...I cant help but reflect on all that weve shared."
"What do you remember most?"
Her companion lost herself in her own thoughts for a moment before answering. "Your eyes...I remember your eyes," she sighed.
"What about them?," the Regent offered a faint smile.
"The way they sparkled...the love, the life, the spirit they reflected," she answered warmly. "I still see those same things in your eyes...I always have."
Overcome by her friends tender recollection, Ephiny was at a loss for words. She placed her hand gently on the Amazons cheek, taking in her beauty as she relived in her mind what they had once shared. Finally able to speak, she uttered, "I thought I had lost you. I was so scared..."
"But you didnt," Charis interrupted. "Besides, if things hadnt happened the way they did, you wouldnt have had the chance to frolic around the hut like you did last night," she teased her.
"I was relieved, ok? Not to mention emotionally drained," the Regent chuckled at her poor attempt to justify her behavior.
"Admit it, you cant get enough of me," Charis grinned at her.
"I cant," Ephiny heard herself say in a serious tone as she leaned over and kissed her friend on the cheek. "Im exhausted," she said, abruptly jumping to her feet. "Can we meet later? Maybe go for a ride?," she requested.
"Id like that," Charis responded as she embraced the Regent. "Thank you, Ephiny...for all you did for me. I owe you my life."
"You dont owe me anything," Ephiny maintained as she made her way out the door, silently paying homage to the Moon Goddess. She had spent so much of her time with Gabrielle, centralizing their relationship, and now lamenting over what she feared might be its decline, that she had almost forgotten how much she enjoyed being with Charis. But as she sat there, holding her friends lifeless body in her arms the night before, she vowed to spend as much time with her as possible if given a second chance. And now that she had received that chance, she intended to make good on her promise.

The warrior sat at the table, scrawling something on a piece of parchment, listening to the sounds of the bards snoring. She hadnt slept much as her mind was clouded by thoughts, cluttered with words. They had to talk...soon. She had to know where she and the bard were going from here. She knew what she wanted. And now the time had come to find out for sure what Gabrielle wanted.
"Good morning," the bard yawned as she stretched her arms above her shoulders.
"Good morning. Rest well?," Xena responded as she stuffed the parchment she had been writing on between her breasts.
"Never better," she offered her a sleepy smile. "How about you?"
"Not bad. I thought wed get some breakfast. Can you be ready soon?," she said as she wiped her sweaty palms on her leathers.
"Were talking food here, right?," the bard joked. "Ill be ready in no time."
The two women took their time as they made their way across the village. "I didnt see Ephiny or Charis at breakfast?," Gabrielle pointed out.
"Did you really expect to?," the warrior responded. "Im sure Charis had other things on her mind and Ephiny...well, shes probably worn out from that exhibition she put on last night." She tried to laugh only to discover that her nerves were too frazzled. "Gabrielle?," she forced herself. "We need to talk about some things."
"I know we do," she took the warriors hand as they walked.
"Would you mind if we went somewhere else for a couple of days?," Xena requested. "Well stay close by. Its just that I...I dont want to be interrupted. This is too important."
"That sounds wonderful," the bard sighed at the thought of spending some time alone with her love. "By the time you get Argo prepared, Ill be ready to go. I need to let Ephiny know were leaving. Can I tell her where well be? Where are we going anyway?," she rambled.
"The edge of the village, next to the river. That way, if were needed, we can get here fast. Tell her where well be but, Gabrielle...," she became insistent. "Make it clear to her that we dont want to be disturbed unless its absolutely necessary."
"I will," she assured her. "I wont be long."
"Good," the warrior sighed in relief, clasping the bards hand tighter before they parted. "Meet me at the stables," she told her as she watched her walk toward the Regents hut.

The warrior and the bard warmed themselves by the campfire. They both sat on Gabrielles bedroll, their legs crossed, facing each other. They had spent most of the day setting up camp and fishing. They had talked a lot about many things, most of them trivial. But the bard could tell that the warrior had something on her mind.
"I wanted to wait for the right moment to discuss this," Xena nervously began. "Ive already told you how I feel about you..."
"Xena, I feel the same way about you...," the bard sounded urgent.
"I know, Gabrielle. And theres only one thing that could make me happier than knowing that," she was frightened as she began to reveal herself. Frightened that Gabrielle wouldnt want what she wanted. Frightened that the words she was about to say would cause her to lose her love forever. As she sat there, studying the bards questioning expression, she felt her own heart pounding against her chest. "Gabrielle," she began again. "Ive been thinking about exactly what I want to say to you and, I hope you dont mind...but I wrote it down," she told her as she removed the piece of parchment from her cleavage. Upon taking the bards hand, the warrior began to read:
My life, before you,
was desolate. Each breath I took the same as the last. I secretly longed to encounter someone-- Anyone who could set my spirit free in death. And then, I found you and our paths merged. Though I tried to cast you aside, You refused to let me go. Ill never know what you saw in me, I only know that Im grateful your eyes didnt surrender to the darkness that so often greeted them. I remember when you came to me. What I cant recall is the moment when you became a part of me. My life has become nonexistent apart from your love. I no longer think of me and of you, but of us. Though I dont have much to offer, I offer you all that I have With the hope we can continue our journey together. |
Her voice began to tremble as she
fought back her tears. "Gabrielle, I want to spend the rest
of my days with you, next to you, in your arms. And, no matter
what you say, Ill always feel the way I do about you. If Im
asking too much..."
"Yes, Xena," the bard managed through her tears.
"Too much, huh?," the warriors heart sank.
"No," Gabrielle found herself laughing and crying at the same time. "Yes, I want to spend the rest of my life with you," she caressed the warriors tear stained cheek.
"Gabrielle, Im asking you for a commitment...," Xena wanted to make her intentions perfectly clear.
"I know and Im telling you that I want that too," the bards tears of joy continued to flow.
"Really?," she thought her ears had certainly deceived her.
"Yes, really. Theres nothing I want more than to spend the rest of my life with you," the bard whispered as she lifted herself to her knees and moved closer to her, finally wrapping her arms around the warriors neck.
"Gabrielle," Xena got on her knees and faced the bard. "Will you bond with me?"
Face to face, the two women sat in silence, each searching the others eyes, attempting to see past them. "Yes, Xena," Gabrielle finally spoke as she ran her fingers through her loves raven hair. "I...gods, your eyes are beautiful!," she suddenly interrupted herself, struck down by the celestial sapphire orbs.
The butterflies in Xenas stomach danced as she clung to her loves every utterance. The bards hand moved over the warriors face, gently brushing her hair aside, revealing the soft curves in her neck and shoulders. "Youve made my life wonderful," Gabrielle whispered as she moved closer, her lips slightly touching her cheek. Xena closed her eyes, taking in the intoxicating scent of the bards skin. At last, she felt her loves mouth unite with her own. She parted her lips as they connected, their frenzied tongues seeking to explore every element of their surroundings. As the moments passed, they sank deeper and deeper into each other. Delving into their kiss, they captured each others soul, each feasting on the unshielded essence of the other.
* * * * * * * *
Xena held the bard in her arms as they lay on her bedroll listening to the sound of the crackling fire. "Xena? Are you still awake?," the bard quietly asked.
"Yes," she answered, tenderly kissing her.
"Ive never been happier than I am tonight," she whispered as she snuggled closer to her love.
"Your happiness means everything to me," the warriors heart danced as she held the bard and closed her eyes, once again welcoming her loves heart-rending kisses.

"Oh, Gabrielle," Callisto was singing the bards name when she appeared in the field next to her.
"Screw you," the bard sang back to her as she continued to work her fighting staff.
"Playing with your little stick again, I see," the goddess picked up a twig and began to mimic her, twirling it over her head.
"Now...," Gabrielle began to sing again as she continued to practice her moves. "Listen to my story about Calli-sto. Ive got more goddess stock in my little tiny toe. She doesnt have a friend. Her entire familys dead! Shed better move her butt or Ill crack her in the head!," she sang with enthusiasm.
"Aaaaahhh!," the goddess opened her mouth wide, letting out a deafening screech as she left in a huff.
"Good," the bard said aloud as she resumed her work out. "Im going to beat her this time," she talked to herself, referring to the upcoming Amazon weapons competition. "Im going to beat Ephiny if its the last thing I do."
"I wouldnt be too sure. Shes one of the best, you know," Xena approached her.
"Not this time, Xena. Ive been practicing. See," the bard began to put on a private demonstration for the warrior.
"Youve gotten very good. But can you beat me?," Xena challenged, spinning the staff she held in her right hand.
"Bring it on, warrior woman," she accepted.
The two sparred for some time before Gabrielle finally knocked Xenas staff out of her hands. With a final blow, she brought her mate to the ground and stood staring down at her. "You let me beat you, didnt you?," she asked, gently nudging at the warriors shoulder with her staff. Xena, impressed by the bards skill, insisted, "No. You won fair and square."
"Come on, Xena. Tell the truth. You let me beat you, right?," she persisted.
"No. Like I said, you won on your own." The warrior hadnt lied. The truth of the matter was that she had been distracted by the bards radiance. Pulling her down on top of her, she asked, "Can you kiss as well as you fight?"
"You should know the answer to that question by now," she responded before giving in to her.
Though she had kissed her many times in the past weeks, the bard still managed to melt the warrior each time their lips met. While they were camping alone on the outskirts of the village they spent endless hours sitting on the riverbank kissing, holding one another, and talking, each repeatedly telling the other of the love she had felt for so long.
The bard had also managed to painfully explain to the warrior that, though she loved her, she was limited in the ways she was able to express that love. Xena wanted her desperately, longed for her touch, craved her body. Yet she understood the feelings which plagued the bard. And, even though it became difficult for her at times, her patience proved steadfast.
"Xena," Gabrielle found herself panting. "We have to stop."
Noting the fretful expression on her face, the warrior complied. "Lets head back," she suggested. Checking her libido, she reached for the bards hand and pulled her to her feet. "You really are quite good with your staff," she stated in an attempt to divert her attention away from her stirring desire.
"Xena," she stopped in her tracks and looked into the warriors eyes. "Im...," she searched for the word. "Im frustrated too," she grabbed Xenas arms and playfully shook her as she spoke.
"Give yourself time, Gabrielle," the warrior chuckled at the urgent look on the bards face. "Im not going anywhere."
"Arrrg! Im driving myself insane!," she laughed at herself, throwing her hands in the air as she began to walk again.
"Well, at least we can take our cold baths together."
"Did you have to mention the baths?," the bard raised an eyebrow. "Utter torture!," she added.
"Ive learned to enjoy admiring your naked body from a distance," the warrior noted.
"Xena, dont say naked in front of me right now," she warned.
"Alright, alright. Lets just get our fully clothed selves back to the village. Im sure youre famished by now."
"Oh, Im hungry alright," the bard muttered, causing the warrior to break into laughter. "Xena? I thought I should tell you that Callisto made an appearance a little while ago," she informed her.
"What did she want this time?," the warrior raised an eyebrow.
"I handled her. You wouldve been proud of me."
"Gabriellllle...what did you do?," she was afraid to ask.
"I sang to her."
"Sang to her?," Xena was stumped.
"Yep. Now...," the bard began to reiterate her song. "Listen to my story bout Calli-sto..."

Ephiny picked up her sword and headed out the door. After days of deliberation, she had finally come to a decision. Outside Gabrielles hut, she held her head high as she waited for the bard to answer the door. "Ephiny! Hi," her queen greeted her with a hug as usual.
"I need to speak with you," the Regent immediately began to address her point.
"Come in. Sit down," the bard offered her a chair.
"Ive had a chance to think about what we talked about and Ive decided that Id like to do it."
"Are you sure?," she asked out of consideration for the Regents feelings.
"Im sure, Gabrielle. Id be honored," she smiled at her.
"Im so glad, Ephiny! Thank you so much. Xenas going to be as happy as I am," she was delighted as she hugged her again. "Speaking of Xena...," the bard saw the warrior approaching the hut.
"Xena!," Gabrielle couldnt wait to tell her the news. "Ephinys agreed to preside over our ceremony."
"Thats great," Xenas smile was bitter-sweet. She was genuinely happy that the Regent had agreed and she knew that Ephiny was sincerely happy for them. Yet she also knew this had to be painful for her.
When she and Gabrielle returned from their retreat, she had convinced the bard to let her tell the Amazon of their commitment and pending bonding ceremony. She knew the news would upset her and she also knew that Ephiny wouldnt want to cry in front of Gabrielle. And she did cry when Xena told her, but the warrior understood. In an instant, reality had sent all of her hopes and dreams crashing down around her, leaving her rummaging through the ruins, forcing her to rebuild her life.
"Xena, I really want to do this," the Amazon assured her. "I love you both so much and I couldnt be happier for you," she managed a smile, but her glassy eyes disclosed the turmoil lurking behind them.
"Thank you," Xena meant it as she hugged her tight, marveling at her integrity.

"You look like you just lost your best friend," Charis said to the Regent.
"I have...in a sense," Ephiny sighed, shifting the dirt with her bare feet.
"Gabrielle?," Charis sighed.
The Amazon nodded as tears formed in her eyes. "I guess Ive been saying goodbye to her for a while. But sometimes I..."
"Genuine feelings dont die overnight," her friend reminded her. "That I know from experience."
"I know," she resigned. "And I am happy for them both, but..."
"Youre sad for yourself?," Charis interjected.
"Yeah, I guess so."
"Thats reasonable...for now. But give yourself time and, before you know it, youll be back on your feet." Charis hated to see Ephiny like this. Downhearted and broken. She stood and moved, having a seat on the rock the Amazon was leaning on as she sat on the cold ground. Positioning one leg on either side of the Regent, Charis wrapped her arms around her.
"I do find comfort in knowing that shell be happy...and loved," Ephiny sighed as she sat back, settling into Charis embrace.
"Thats a start, isnt it?," she smiled as she affectionately pressed her cheek against the Regents.
"Yes...yes, it is a start," Ephiny recognized. "Im presiding over the bonding ceremony," she informed her.
"Ive heard and, I must say, youre a better woman than I am," Charis chuckled, the Regent somehow finding the ability to join in her laughter.

The two women squared off, holding their staffs in position. This was the final round. Each of them had managed to erase the rest of the competition, which wasnt too difficult since Xena hadnt competed in the event. "Show me what youve got," the Regent addressed her queen as she waited for her to strike the first blow. The bard swung at her friends shins, watching as she effectively counteracted the blow by effortlessly leaping over the staff. "Not bad," Ephiny spoke again. "But you can do better," she grinned. This time, Gabrielle executed a series of blows. Focused and agile, she moved in on her opponent.
The two women were soon covered in sweat, their muscles beginning to ache as their staffs clashed again and again. The Amazon Queen was skillful, holding her own against the expert Regent. The competition between them escalated, appearing brutal at times, as the crowd cheered them on. The warrior, sitting just outside the circle remembered her promise to the bard. She had agreed not to embarrass Gabrielle by stepping into the ring--no matter what the circumstances. As she sat there, a silent witness to the fierce battle, she held her hands over her face, peeking through her fingers. Just as the competition officials were prepared to declare a tie, the final blow was delivered.
"Oh gods! Please get up! Im so sorry! Oh gods!," the woman knelt next to her friend, now out like a light on the ground. Ephiny swallowed hard as the warrior lifted her up by the back of her tunic and effortlessly moved her aside. "Gabrielle? Gabrielle?," Xena gently tapped the bards cheeks with her hands. "For the love of Zeus! Somebody get me some water!," she demanded.
Eponin, without stopping to think, doused both the Queen and Xena. "Oops," she uttered as she backed away from the agitated warrior. "Guess I lost, huh?," were Gabrielles waking words.
"Yep, looks that way," Xena answered her, relieved when she realized the blow to the back of her head wasnt as serious as it had looked. "Ephiny, get over here," she instructed. The Amazon stiffened her jaw as she moved next to the warrior who stood to face her. "Champion!," Xena announced as she raised the Regents arm over her head. "Thought I was going to sock ya, didnt you?," she teased her. The Amazon merely shook her head and chuckled as she made her way toward Charis, whom she had defeated much earlier in the competition. Charis wasnt by any means unskilled when it came to the fighting staff but her forte was unquestionably chobos. Trained by Queen Melosa, there werent many who could outdo her. In fact, she had defeated Ephiny earlier, taking top honors in the event.
"I had her, Xena," the dazed bard insisted.
"Yeah, you had her alright."
"Well, I could do worse than losing to Ephiny."
"Mmm hmm," the warrior nodded, helping the bard to her feet.
"I didnt mean to hurt you," Ephiny gave the Queen an apologetic hug.
"You didnt," Gabrielle told her, despite the lump growing out of the back of her head.
"You did well," the Amazon extended her arm to the bard.
"So did you. Next time," Gabrielle smiled as the two clasped wrists.
"Next time," Ephiny returned her smile, still stunned by the intensity of their match. There was no way she was ever going to lift a staff to the bard again, competition or no competition.
* * * * * * * *
Xena lay awake in the dark as the bard moved closer to her, gently kissing her neck. Slowly, she traced a path to her ear, softly tickling the warriors earlobe with her tongue before making her way to her mouth. Xena yielded to her loves gentle, yet probing, kisses. "Goodnight," she whispered when the bard finally pulled away and placed her head on her chest. "Goodnight," Gabrielles voice was muffled as she delicately kissed the tops of Xenas breasts, running her hand along her muscular thigh.
Xena shuddered in response to her touch, at the same time trying to contain her excitement. The bard moved the straps of the warriors undergarment off her shoulders. Xenas body tensed as her loves mouth covered her breast, her teeth gently grasping at her nipple. "Gabrielle?," she whispered through a ragged breath.
"I want this to happen, Xena," the kisses the bard was delivering became more intense as her mouth made its way from one breast to the other.
* * * * * * * *
Ephiny stood outside the hut, listening to the sounds coming from inside. She had stopped by to check on Gabrielle, to make sure she had recovered from the bump shed received earlier. And now, she found herself unable to move. Feeling like a fool for remaining there, yet unable to tear herself away, she held her breath as she crouched beneath the window.
* * * * * * * *
Xena was pleasantly surprised by the sound of her undergarment tearing as the bard tugged at the threads until, at last, the warriors body was revealed to her. Though she had seen her naked form before, none of those occasions could compare to this one. She sat up, looking Xena in the eyes as she allowed her to remove her tunic. Once it was out of the way, Gabrielle moved close to her, offering her breasts to the hungry warrior. "Take me, Xena," she whispered as her desire began to emerge.
* * * * * * * *
"What in Tartarus am I doing?," Ephiny questioned her own behavior as she stood there paralyzed. "This is insane! Im acting like some kind of pervert!," she chastised herself. And yet she refused to budge.
* * * * * * * *
The bard ran her hands up and down the warriors back while Xena covertly pinched herself to make sure she wasnt dreaming as she continued to feast on her loves breasts. The warrior shifted her position, placing the bard on her back, kissing her fervently before slowing to ask, "Are you sure this is what you want?"
"Im sure," she persisted, pulling the warrior to her, devouring her mouth with her own. Xenas hands trembled as she fumbled with the bards skirt. She had waited so long, wanted this so desperately. She wanted to savor every touch, every emotion. She wanted everything to be perfect for her love.
When the last of Gabrielles clothing was lying on the floor next to the bed, Xena moved on top of the bard. The feel of her flesh against her own consumed her. The soft moan that came from the bard as their bodies collided sent her over the edge. She kissed her lips, her neck, her breasts, tracing a line across her abdomen to her navel, lingering there before moving down between her thighs. Unable to wait any longer, she tasted her love, delighting in the moist confirmation of the bards desire.
"Xena," Gabrielle said her name again and again as the warrior gently pushed her legs further apart. Her appetite for the bard insatiable, she continued to move her mouth over her, her loves soft cries of ecstasy driving her insane.
* * * * * * * *
Ephiny placed her arms against the wall of the hut and rested her head on her wrists. "Ive got to get out of here," she thought. "This isnt right. In fact, its positively demented!" Sweating, aroused, and disgusted at herself, she was trying in vain to move her feet when she felt the warmth of Charis hands on her hips. Trying to catch her breath, she started to whisper, "Wha...what are you..."
"Shhh," Charis placed her finger over her lips as she continued to massage the Regents hips. Ephiny, not bothering to turn around, faced the wall, her shoulders tensing. She knew Charis could hear the sounds emanating from inside the hut. Her embarrassment getting the best of her, Ephiny attempted to move. "No," Charis whispered as she wrapped her arms around Ephinys abdomen, slowly moving her hands toward her breasts. She could feel the Regents erect nipples through her tunic.
The bard sat up and placed her hands on the warriors shoulders, gently guiding her mouth to hers. She kissed her as she repositioned her onto her back. Xena moaned as the bards hand found its way between her legs, her fingers gently beginning to explore her. When the warrior began to move with her hand, the bard made her way inside her, provoking a louder moan this time. "Gods, Gabrielle," Xena gasped as she moved in unison with her probing fingers. The bard placed her mouth over the warriors breast, sucking on her nipple as Xenas thrusts became more pronounced.
* * * * * * * *
Teasing the Regents erect nipple with one hand, Charis placed her free hand under the back of Ephinys skirt. The Regent, still leaning against the wall, willingly parted her feet, granting her access. Charis moved her hand inside Ephinys undergarment and entered her. Aware of the intensity of her need, she pushed deep inside her. Ephinys breaths came in quick gasps as she began to bear down on Charis hand. "Come back to your hut with me," Charis whispered in her ear.
* * * * * * * *
"Gabri...elle...," the warrior managed. "Will you do something for me?," she spoke softly. "Anything," the bard nodded. "Get on your knees." Gabrielle complied as the warrior shifted her position, sliding her head under the bard.
"Gods, Xena," her love gasped as she pulled her onto her mouth. The bard moved her hips, creating friction between herself and the warriors tongue. "Yes, Xena. Gods, yes," she spoke as Xena pushed her tongue inside her, her cries of pleasure making the warrior delirious.
* * * * * * * *
Charis had the Regents clothes off of her before she was able to make it through the door of the Queens hut. The two desperately made their way to the bed, exchanging urgent kisses all the way. Ephiny cried out as Charis entered her again, this time taking her with her entire hand. She knelt by the bed, the Regents feet still on the floor and again and again, she moved in and out of her, Ephinys hips thrusting to meet her each time. "Charis," she managed to speak as she gasped for air. "Come here." The Amazon slowly withdrew from her and crawled onto the bed. Ephiny kissed her again as she removed her clothing piece by piece. "Gods, Ive carried an image of you...like this...around in my head for so long and now...I realize that my memory doesnt do your body justice," the Regent said as she gazed at her perfect form.
* * * * * * * *
Xena lay next to the bard, her hand moving over her. "Xena, its ok. I want you to," Gabrielle whispered. Carefully, the warrior entered her. She was terrified of hurting her. "Deeper," the bard whispered in her ear. Cautiously, the warrior began to move her hand until, finally, Gabrielle began to move with her. "Yes. Gods, yes, Xena," she gasped as she started to move faster. The warrior was pleasantly surprised when the bard rose to her knees, still pressing herself against her hand. Gabrielle reached for her, pulling her up, and the two sat on their knees facing each other, the warrior now deep inside her. Wrapping her arms around her, sending an electrifying pulse through Xena as their breasts touched, the bards thrusts became more intense. "Dont stop," she begged, digging her fingernails into the warriors buttocks. Her head spinning, Xena gave her everything she had as she pul

Ephiny coaxed Charis onto her stomach. "I remember how to please you," she whispered as she ran her tongue over her shoulder blades and down the small of her back, her hands massaging her supple backside. "I...," Charis attempted to respond, but was cut short when the Regent placed her hand between her legs, driving her crazy. Ephiny watched her buttocks rise and fall as Charis moved on her hand, soft groans of pleasure emerging from her throat.
Without warning, the Regent stood and walked across the room, leaving Charis lying on the bed panting. "Whats the matter?," the frustrated Amazon asked. "Nothing," Ephiny assured her as she reached inside a drawer.
"You kept it?," Charis couldnt believe her eyes when she saw what the Regent held in her hands.
"Of course," Ephiny nodded. "Arent you glad?," she revealed a devilish grin as she climbed back onto the bed.

Much to the warriors delight, the bard was moving against her so wildly that Xena was barely able to keep up with her. Gabrielles cries grew louder and Xena could feel her body stiffen in her arms. The bard began to shudder as her thrusts became deeper and slower. "Xenaaa!," she exclaimed as she reached her peak. The warrior held her tightly as her body continued to quake. "Gods, Gabrielle," she whispered, overcome by the bards heat. The bard let out one final cry before collapsing into Xenas arms. The warrior was overwhelmed, fighting back her tears, as she felt her loves breasts rise and fall against her own as she tried to catch her breath.

The Regent buried her head between Charis thighs, her mind flooding with images of the many times they had made love. Charis groans of approval encouraged her now as they had in their youth. She opened her mouth, taking her in, swallowing her desire as she fastened the clasps, securing the leather straps. "Do you want me to do this?," Ephiny softly asked as she kissed her lips. "Yes. Yes. Please," her answer came in shallow breaths.
Charis cried out as Ephiny moved on top of her, penetrating her with the firm leather. Within moments, she rolled her lover onto her back, positioning herself on top of her, moving her hips in a rhythm that hypnotized the Regent. "No ones ever been inside me but you," Charis confessed as she began to come down harder on her. Ephiny, clearly taken aback by the disclosure, clung to her as she matched her eager thrusts.
* * * * * * * *
"Ive been dying to do this," the bard was still struggling to breathe as she spoke. "Please," Xena pleaded as Gabrielle made her way between her legs. She moved her mouth over her, exploring her every detail. The warrior writhed under her, raising her hips to her mouth. "Gab..," she started to call out her name, but her powerful orgasm rendered her speechless. The bard raised her eyes and watched as Xenas eyes closed when she threw her head back, her thighs beginning to tremble. Her cries of delight excited the bard as she took her into her mouth, ravaging her passion as it liberated itself from her body.

Again and again, Charis descended on the Regent, pushing the leather deeper and deeper inside herself. Both women began to moan as Charis massaged Ephinys breasts with her hands. As their movement intensified, the Regent felt herself beginning to give. Charis, recognizing the look on her lovers face, let go. Surrendering themselves completely, each whispered the others name as they climaxed together, their mouths united in a frenzied kiss.

Gabrielle opened her eyes as she felt the warriors warm breath against her cheek when she kissed her. "Good morning," Xena whispered, tenderly stroking the bards face with her hand.
"Good morning," the bard offered her a sleepy smile before planting a kiss on her that left the warrior breathless.
"Breakfast?," Xena asked. The bard answered with an enthusiastic nod of approval as she climbed out of bed and put her arms around her love.
The two talked about virtually every subject imaginable while they ate, laughing more than either of them had managed to for quite some time. "You look radiant," the warrior seemed stunned, as though she was looking at the bard for the first time.
"And you...," Gabrielle moved onto her lap. "You look like youre still hungry," she grinned as she grabbed her hand and coaxed her back into bed.

Ephiny, feeling something tickling the insides of her thighs, opened her eyes to find Charis between her legs. "Morning," she mumbled as plunged her tongue inside the Regent.
Once she had fulfilled her, Charis crawled into Ephinys arms. "Wow...," the Regent, now spent, sighed. "That was...quick," she chuckled.
"I think you were dreaming. And from the sound of it, it was a pretty good dream," Charis informed her. "I couldnt resist," she confessed.
"Thank the gods!," the Regent exclaimed, disappearing under the covers. "I want you to know," her voice was muffled by the blankets. "I was dreaming about you," she responded as she settled between Charis thighs and offered her mouth to her.
"Ephiny, youre not obligated to...," Charis attempted, though she thought she might die if the Regent stopped now.
Ephiny momentarily peered out from under the blankets and looked her in the eyes. "I have no regrets. Theres nothing I want more right now than to make love to you," she assured her.
"And theres nothing I want more than to give myself to you," Charis whispered, moving her hips in time with the Regents attentive tongue.
* * * * * * * *
"Gabrielle. H...hello," Ephiny choked on her words as her heart skipped a beat at the unexpected sight of the bard.
"Hey," was all the bard could manage as she hugged the Regent. She was surprised at her own uneasiness. She had expected to be a little nervous, but this. This was bordering on sheer panic.
"What are you doing in here?," the curious Amazon asked. She had actually been trying to avoid the bard and the last place she had expected to run into her was in the stables.
"I just finished brushing Argo," she answered, not telling her that she had come there to think about how to act the next time she saw the Amazon. She loved Ephiny as she loved her own sister. Though she was ecstatic that she and Xena had finally made love, she knew it had to hurt the Regent. And the night she and Ephiny had shared together, meaningful as it was, made things even more complicated.
"Oh, good for Argo," the Amazon cringed at her own lame remark. The truth was that she didnt know what to say or how to act. And, to top it all off, she felt as though the words "I just had sex with Charis" were branded across her forehead. "It looks like its going to rain today." In her mind, she was slapping herself as yet another tired statement escaped her lips.
"Yep. Looks like rain," the bard wasnt doing much better.
"So, uh...what did you have for breakfast?," the Amazon grimaced at the sound of her own question.
"Youve got it bad," Gabrielle raised an eyebrow as she spoke in a low growl.
"This is ridiculous, isnt it?," the Regent laughed.
"Hows Charis this morning anyway?," the bard hinted that she knew more than Ephiny assumed.
"Good. Shes good. Just fine," her voice began to shake as she wondered why Gabrielle chose to ask that question at this moment.
As nervous laughter escaped her, the bard admitted, "I know, Ephiny. Theres no reason for you to feel uncomfortable...and I also know that youre aware of what happened between me and Xena last night."
"How...," the flustered Regent began.
"I saw you outside the window...both of you," Gabrielle informed her.
"Oh...shit," Ephiny, now utterly mortified, turned her back to the bard and hid her face behind her hands.
"No big deal," the Queen said matter-of-factly as she threw her hand in the air as though she was brushing the incident aside.
"Gods, Gabrielle. I..."
"Nope. Dont try to explain. I mean it, Ephiny. I get it. I really do. Its ok," she started to chuckle.
"I...umm...ok. Ok, Im going to drop it before I end up with both boots in my mouth," the Amazon laughed. "I...," she hesitated. "I need to get back...shes waiting for me," she spoke cautiously, not wanting to say the wrong thing.
"I know," the look on her face reflected her insight. "Xenas probably wondering where I am too," she added, reaching out to hug the Amazon. The two embraced, holding onto each other as tears filled their eyes. Ephiny pulled her as close to her as she could as her emotions overwhelmed her. Gabrielle reciprocated, gently massaging the small of the Regents back with her hands.
Xenas left cheek protruded slightly as she pushed on the inside of her cheek with her tongue. Looking down at the ground and then up again at the two women, she placed a hand on her hip. "Whats happening here?," she sounded exasperated, her eyes cutting through them as she drew in a deep breath.
"I...we...," the bard wiped the tears from her face as she tried to speak.
"Ahh, dont get your tunics in a bunch. I was only kidding," the warrior let them off the hook, giving the bard a brief kiss and the Amazon a peck on the cheek. She understood what was happening between the two women. She had known all along that this wasnt going to be an uncomplicated situation. She trusted them both and, moreover, her heart went out to the Amazon. "Actually, Ephiny, Gabrielle and I were wondering if you and Charis would like to join us for dinner in Gabrielles hut--just the four of us," she inquired.
"Ye...uh...we...," Ephiny stuttered.
"Umm, Ephiny...I know about the whole eavesdropping thing. We both know," Xena acknowledged.
"You saw us too?!," the Amazon exclaimed.
"Yep. Thats right," Xena grinned.
"Shit!," Ephiny blurted out again, sending Gabrielle into a fit of laughter.
"Dont laugh at the woman!," the warrior gave the bard a playful shove as she tried to suppress her own amusement.
"Dinner sounds great. Well be there," the Amazon, now laughing at her predicament along with them, finally responded.
* * * * * * * *
"Charis?," the Regent woke the sleeping Amazon from her nap.
"Mmmm. I like waking up this way," she uttered as Ephinys lips met hers.
"I need to talk to you," a hint of concern tainted the Regents voice.
Charis collected her bearings, poured two cups of water, and sat down across the table from Ephiny. "You have my undivided attention," she told her as she tried to her hide her worry. She honestly didnt know what the Regent was about to say, though she hoped she would say the words she so desperately needed to hear.
"Charis," she reluctantly began. "Do you...would you...what Im trying to ask you is...," she inhaled deeply. "If you could, would you change what happened between us last night?," she bit her lip, holding her breath as she awaited her response.
"Yes," Charis said flatly. "I would," she could see the hurt emerging in the Regents eyes.
"You...you would?," Ephiny swallowed hard.
"Yes, I would," Charis repeated. "I...," she paused as she tried to summon the courage to continue. "I would have told you that I love you. Ive never stopped loving you," she revealed, on the verge of tears. The Regent, her face suddenly colorless, walked slowly toward the window, where she stood silently staring out. Charis felt her heart sink as she looked at her, trying to figure out what was going on inside her mind. As she watched her standing there with her head bowed, she noticed that she was crying. "Did I say something wrong?," she spoke softly to the Regent, her fear welling up inside her.
"No," Ephinys response was barely audible through her sobs. "But there is something Ive wanted to ask you for a long time," she raised her head, choking back her tears.
"What is it, sweetheart?," a look of deep concern painted Charis face.
The Regent was visibly moved by the tender words. Charis had a habit of calling her sweetheart. But that was long ago, when they were still young, before...
"Why did you leave me when I loved you so much?," Ephiny finally asked.
Charis mind regressed to the time when she decided to leave the village...and her love. She couldnt believe so many years had passed since that fateful day. "I never meant to hurt you," her voice was filled with regret. "I adored you. You have to believe that," she placed her hand on Ephinys cheek.
"Then why?," the Amazon withdrew from her, crushing Charis under the weight of the pain she still harbored.
"Do you remember the conversation we had a couple of weeks before I left?," Charis asked.
"I remember many conversations. Most of them ended with I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Dont ever leave me. Things like that," Ephiny sounded bitter.
"The one Im talking about concerned our plans for the future. Remember?," she coaxed.
The Regent searched her memories, trying to remember. "Are you talking about that time we climbed the tree? We sat in the branches for hours...," Ephinys mind drifted back.
"Yes. Thats what Im referring to. I asked you what you wanted out of life. Can you recall what you said?," Charis attempted to jog her memory.
"Ye...yes, I remember," she looked deep in thought. "I said I only wanted three things in life: the Queens mask, children...and you."
"Thats right," Charis tone suggested that the Regent should have her answer by now.
"I dont get it. What are you trying to say?," Ephiny wracked her brain, searching for the solution to the riddle before her.
"You wanted children, Ephiny," Charis reiterated. "And that was something I couldnt give you."
"Its not like Amazons dont procreate every day, Charis. Procreation and love arent necessarily the same thing. You know that. You knew it then," she grew defensive. "I couldve...we couldve raised children together."
"Youre missing my point, Ephiny. Im aware that Amazons mate for the purpose of procreation but...I...," she suddenly grew silent.
"But what?"
"I couldnt resign myself to sharing you like that, ok?," she declared. "I couldnt bring myself to stomach the idea of someone else...touching you. No matter what the purpose. Call me selfish. Call me a fool if you want, but I just couldnt handle it. I couldnt stand in the way of your dreams and I couldnt bear to say goodbye to you. So I just left. I didnt see any other way. And I stayed away until I knew I was strong enough to be near you without falling apart every time I saw your face. Besides, when I returned, nothing more was said of our relationship. You had moved on and, later met Phantes and had Xenan. There wasnt any room for me in your life. I just wanted you to be happy and, I thought the only way to make sure you were was for me to step aside," she expelled a deep sigh of relief as she slumped back into the chair. She had kept this locked deep inside herself for so long. And now, after bar
"So, now Im an Amazon Regent and I have a beautiful son...the only thing I dont have is someone to share it with," Ephiny quietly lamented.
"Do you remember the three things I told you I wanted most?," Charis stood and moved closer to her, putting her arm around her hips.
"You said you wanted a set of chobos, me, and me," she said fondly. Charis played with the ends of Ephinys hair as she focused her eyes on the floor, determined not to let her see the tears forming in her eyes. "And now?," Ephiny reluctantly asked.
"Nothings changed," her eyes betrayed her and released her tears.
"All this time and you never said anything?," Ephiny reached out to hold her.
"I thought it was better that way...for you," she buried her face in the Regents shoulder.
"I wanted you back. Ive always wanted you back, but I thought you didnt love me, didnt need me, didnt want me. So I left you alone...did my best to salvage what I could of our relationship...decided Id rather have you in my life as my friend than not have you in my life at all," she admitted.
"And Gabrielle?," Charis needed to know where she stood.
"I love Gabrielle. But you...we have a past, a history, a bond like no other Ive ever known. If I had known how you felt, I wouldve never searched for love outside of your arms. You were everything I ever wanted...everything Id ever dreamed of having. I only looked elsewhere because I thought I couldnt have you," Ephiny held Charis tight as she unveiled her truths.
"Ephiny?," her voice transformed into a whisper. "Do you still love me? The way you used to?," she moved away from the Regent as she braced herself for the blow she was certain she was about to receive.
"Gods, yes, Charis. I always have. I only put my feelings aside because I thought they were in vain," she walked over to her, pressing her body against her back as she wrapped her in her arms.
The two women stood there listening to the silence surrounding them, taking in the warmth of each other as the moments passed. Slowly, Charis turned to face the Regent, their lips meeting in a tender, yet passionate kiss.
* * * * * * * *
The bard scurried around the hut, meticulously placing flowers and trays of food around the room while the warrior made the bed, which had been occupied by the two women throughout most of the afternoon. "What do you think of Charis?," Gabrielle asked Xena.
"I dont know her very well, but she seems like a decent woman," the warrior answered.
"I like her. I think shell be good for Ephiny. Shouldnt they be here soon? Im getting hungry."
"Yep," Xena said, swatting the bard on her derriere.
"Hey!," she responded, returning the warriors kiss. "Xena!," she exclaimed as her love began to fondle her breasts. "Havent Ephiny and Charis seen enough already?," she jested. "Theyll be here any minute."
"Hmmm. Guess youre right, but...," without warning, she lifted the bards tunic, revealing her breasts, and started to smother them with kisses. A knock at the door stifled her efforts as the bard abruptly turned toward the door, whispering a reprimanding, "I told you so!" before turning the latch to greet their guests. "Ephiny! Charis! Come in," she welcomed them with a huge smile.
"Uh...hi, uh...Ga...Gabrielle," Charis mouth was hanging open as she stared at the bards chest. Ephiny gestured at the Queen with her eyes as she tugged at her own tunic in a futile attempt to be discreet. Gabrielles eyes widened when she looked down at her chest and discovered that her tunic was twisted and her entire left breast was exposed. She spun around, her back facing the two women who were still standing outside the door. After quickly making the necessary adjustments, she turned back around, laughing nervously. She invited them in with a motion of her arm, her face now cherry-red. "They have a mind of their own," she stated as she swiftly made her way across the room and whacked the unsuspecting warrior in the back of the head with the cloth napkin she held in her hand, grumbling something that only she could understand.
"Welcome to our peaceful home," Xena winked at Ephiny who was now attempting to hide the grin on her face from the mortified bard.
"Everything looks beautiful, Gabrielle," Ephiny chuckled behind the bards back, immediately stifling herself when Gabrielle turned to face her.
"Thank you," the Queen attempted to restore her dignity.
"We really appreciate you two inviting us. In honor of your upcoming ceremony," Charis offered them a skin full of wine.
"Thank you," Xena accepted the gift. "Shall we?," she motioned toward the table.
"Yes, Im starving!," Gabrielle exclaimed, Xena and the Regent exchanging a knowing look.
The conversation was lively as the women leisurely feasted on the food and drink. The bard, not one to be shy when food is involved, gorged herself on the fresh fruits and bread, not to mention the fish and the deer meat. "I never seem to get enough bread," she noted as she popped the last piece into her mouth. No one in the room dared tell her that she had eaten all of the bread on her own. Charis had tried several times to obtain a piece, but somehow the bard had managed to intercept each of her attempts.
Ephiny caught Gabrielle smiling affectionately at her as she sat in Charis lap, wrapped in her lovers arms. The bard recognized the warmth in the Regents eyes as she returned her smile. The sight of the two women together comforted the Queen. "Ephiny?," Xena addressed her. "You want to take a walk with me?"
"Yeah, sure," she agreed, kissing Charis cheek as she crawled off her lap.
"We wont be too long," Xena informed the bard as the two headed out the door.
They walked slowly away from the cabin to the edge of the woods where they planted themselves on a rock. "I want to ask you something, Ephiny. And I want you to tell me the truth," Xena looked concerned.
"What is it, Xena?," the Amazon was curious.
"Are you happy?," the warrior asked frankly.
Ephiny looked pensive as she quietly pondered the question. "I dont think I could be any happier if I tried," she finally said through a distant smile, images of the events of her life filling her head.
"Im glad," Xena was sincere as she reached for her hand. As the two sat in the dark, Ephiny told her the story of her experiences with Charis. The warrior listened attentively as the Amazon began to weave her tale.
"Now I understand," Xena said, obviously moved, when Ephiny finished speaking. "I just wanted to be sure."
"How about you, Xena?," the Regent asked, as Solan crossed her mind.
"Im ridiculously happy," she answered. "He lives on in my heart," she had read the Amazons mind.
Ephiny squeezed Xenas hand. "I think thats a good way to look at it," her admiration for the warrior was apparent.
"Wed better get back before Gabrielle eats the furniture," Xena grinned.
"I hear you!," the Regent laughed.
Hand in hand, the two made their way back to the hut and to the women who held their hearts. When they had reached their destination, Xena reached for the Amazon. Their embraced lingered until it was interrupted when the door opened. "What do we have here?," the bards question was tinged with sarcasm.
"Oh, this?," Xena playfully pulled Ephiny closer to her. Raising her eyebrows, she proceeded to dip the Amazon. Ephiny caught on fast and the two were soon faking the mother of all kisses.
"Get your filthy hands off my woman," Gabrielle, obviously affected by the wine she had consumed, adopted a deep voice as she began to strut around outside the hut, pretending to spit and show off her muscles.
The merriment continued into the night until Charis and Ephiny decided it was time to take their leave. "We had a great time," Charis insisted. "Thank you again for the invitation."
"Ill see you in the morning," the Regent gave the bard a peck on the cheek before turning to Xena. "I hope the day is everything you always dreamed it would be," the Amazon said, placing an arm around the warriors waist. "Enjoy your retreat. Are you sure you dont want to stay here in the village with Eponin? Or you could use Charis hut?," she asked.
"No, Ill be fine. I like roughing it," Xena insisted. Amazon custom prohibited her from seeing the bard during the three days before their ceremony. The warrior had decided to take Argo and set up camp in the forest, returning shortly before the ceremony on the day the union was to take place. Gabrielle would remain in the village where she would take part in the customary rituals and preparations.
Upon saying their good-byes, Ephiny and Charis headed toward the Queens hut, leaving Xena and Gabrielle to enjoy their final night together before the ceremony.

"Ive missed you so much," the Regent whispered to Charis as she held her in her arms. She had savored every moment as she made love to her, concentrating on each touch, each sensation, engraving them in her memory so she could call on them later.
"Not half as much as Ive missed you," Charis snuggled closer to her as she whispered in her ear.
"You make me feel as though Im loved more than anyone has ever been loved," Ephiny sighed.
"You are," she lifted her head to kiss the Regent.
"Ive been wanting to ask you something," Ephiny confessed as she rolled onto her side to face her love.
"What?"
"Last night...you said no ones ever been inside you but me...," her words trailed off.
"Its true," Charis closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. "Ephiny...Ive never made love to anyone but you," she revealed.
"But...all those years?," the Regent looked astonished.
"When...when I left..," a hint of remorse revealed itself on her face as she was reminded of the pain she had caused her love. "I was just never able to give myself to anyone else. How could I? I was still in love with you. I deceived you. I fooled everyone around me. But I couldnt lie to myself," she admitted. "Can you ever forgive me for what I did to you?," she asked regretfully.
"I already have," Ephiny softly assured her as she took her into her arms.
"Make love to me again," her love pleaded. The Regent willingly complied.

Xena sat with her elbows on the table, resting her chin in her hands. "Are you pouting?," Gabrielle seemed mildly amused.
"No," she grumbled. "Im not pouting," she poked her bottom lip out, trying to look as pitiful as possible. "I dont want to go!," she shouted, banging her fists on the table.
The bard, laughing at the warriors feigned tantrum, patted her on the top of her head. "There, there. Itll be alright," she teased.
"Take care of yourself while Im gone," Xenas tone was now serious as she pulled the bard onto her lap. "Send someone for me if you need me. You know where Ill be, right?"
"I know where youll be and I will," she assured her as she tried to suppress the grin which was attempting to reveal itself.
"Whats so funny?," Xena pryed.
"Youre just so cute sometimes," the bard playfully pinched the warriors cheek.
"Cute? Cute?!," Xena exclaimed. "Gabrielle, Im a lot of things, but cute is not one of them," she actually sounded offended. "Now what are you laughing at?," she asked, noticing the smirk emerging on the bards face.
"Youre just...," she paused and stood up. "So--cute--when--youre--irritated!," she teased, saying the words as fast as she could before taking off like a shot across the room.
"Ill show you cute," Xena snarled, getting up from her chair. When she reached the bard, she took her in her arms and planted a monumental kiss on her lips.
"Ok, not cute," Gabrielle gasped, her loves kiss leaving her breathless. "Do we have time? Please say we have time," she pleaded, her yearning for the warrior taking over.
"Im afraid we dont," she managed, though she wanted nothing more at that moment than to ravage the her loves body.
Her words disappointed the desirous bard. "Couldnt we...just real quick...you know...Come on! You have many skills! Think of something!," her response simultaneously flattered and amused the warrior.
"I really should go. Id hate to be accused of defiling the Amazon routine," she joked. "But...should you decide to relieve yourself while Im away, please do it alone," she teased.
"Xena!," the bard couldnt believe the warrior had just said that.
"You know Im kidding," she assured her, taking her into her arms. "Enjoy your time. Ill be back before you know it," she whispered, leaning down to kiss her love.
"I love you," the bard spoke softly when their lips parted.
"I love you too, Gabrielle," she answered. "I cant wait to give you my life...officially, I mean."
"I promise to cherish it always," she gazed into her soulmates eyes before escorting her to the door.
Gabrielle watched as Xena headed toward the stables. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized that the next time she saw her, she would be offering her the eternal promise of her love.

"Well, Argo, you win again," the warrior tossed her cards onto the rock in front of her. "What would you like to do next?," she addressed her horse who was more interested in chewing on the fringes on Xenas skirt.
"You miss her too, dont you?," she handed Argo a chunk of apple. Though the expedition she had just completed left her exhausted, she still found herself with plenty of time to kill. She had done everything she could think of to pass the time. Hunting. Fishing. Trimming trees with her sword. She had even attempted to play "Hide the Chakram" with Argo, but the horse wouldnt cooperate. Nothing seemed to work. This time of the evening seemed to be when she missed the bard most. As she sharpened her sword, she longed to hear one of Gabrielles animated readings from her scrolls.
"Hello, Xena," Callisto emerged next to her.
"No life yet?," the warrior said, shrugging her shoulders as she continued to work on her blade.
"You think Im the one without a life? Lets see how you feel in two days. I cant wait to see you trudging around dragging your ball and chain."
"If youre referring to Gabrielle, I assure you thats one ball and chain Ill be more than happy to bear," she informed her.
"Well see," the goddess smirked. "I heard you finally bagged her. How was she, anyway?," she was now in the warriors face.
"Better than Ares, Im sure," Xena sneered.
"Ever made it with a goddess?," she inquired, moving even closer to her.
"Made what?," Xena remarked.
"Apple pie, Xena," she quipped, growing exasperated by the warriors casual sarcasm. "Seems as though your little love bug hasnt only been gnawing on your heart. I think it might have taken a bite or two out of your brain as well. Perhaps an evaluation is in order. Ill say a word and you tell me the first thought that pops into your little mind. First word...lets make it easy...sword."
"Your heart," Xena snarled.
"Ok. Next word...Ares."
"Depraved," the warrior answered as she sliced an apple in two.
"Interesting. Lets see...Draco," the goddess taunted.
"Draco, huh?," Xena appeared nonchalant, though she suddenly began to feel nauseated. "Actually, that word reminds me of a song I heard once..."
"Sounds delicious," Callistos curiosity peaked. "Do tell."
"Ill do even better. Ill actually sing it for you. Now...," the warrior burst into song. "Listen to my story bout Calli-sto..."
"Ive already heard that one, thank you, " the goddess cut her off. "This is far from over, Xena," she growled, snuffing out the campfire as she departed.
* * * * * * * *
The two women sat on the bed in the queens hut, the Regent brushing Gabrielles long tresses. "Have you and Xena discussed where youll go after the ceremony?," she asked the bard.
"No, not really," she sounded distant.
"What are you thinking about?," Ephiny probed, noting the bards pensive state.
"Actually...," she paused before continuing. "I was thinking about you and Charis. Tell me about her, Ephiny."
The Amazon hadnt really talked to Gabrielle much about her love. She wasnt sure whether or not she wanted to hear it. "Well...," she began. "I told you that we were lovers when we were younger...," she continued on, revealing the details of her relationship with her Charis. The bard listened, forming images of her descriptions in her mind.
"That would be a great story to include in my scrolls. Would you mind?," Gabrielle asked her when she finished talking.
"No, I wouldnt mind at all. In fact, Id be honored if you wrote about me," the Regent smiled warmly.
"Actually, I already have," she confessed as she climbed off the bed and crossed the room. Digging around in her satchel, she talked to herself. "I know its here somewhere...Oh! Here it is!," her hand emerged clutching a scroll which she immediately handed over to the Amazon. "I hope you like it," she spoke in a humble tone.
Ephiny reclined on the bed, propping her head up on the pillow, and began to read. The bard watched, pleased by the Amazons apparent engrossment as she read. She had always loved it when people took an interest in her work, though she didnt allow just anyone to peruse her scrolls. The light of the candle was reflected in her glassy eyes as she read the final sentences aloud. "The Amazon with an exterior as tough as stone and a heart as soft as down, handed me her fighting staff. My hand brushed hers as I accepted the gift and I know, at that moment, part of my soul left me for her. Running to her. Clinging to her. Needing to remain there under her watchful eye."
"Its beautiful, Gabrielle. I love it," she whispered, a single tear trickling down her cheek as she spoke.
"Im glad," the bard sat next to her on the bed.
"I want you to understand something," the Regent looked deep into her queens eyes. "If it wasnt for you--for your understanding, your compassion, your friendship--I wouldve never found it within myself to love again. Youve shown me things about myself--things Id long forgotten. In fact, its because of you that Im able to put my faith in Charis. Its because of you that Im able to find happiness with her and with my life. Ill always be indebted to you for opening my eyes. And I want you to know that Ill never forget all that youve taught me. About love. About life. And about myself. Youre one of the best friends Ive ever had and youll always hold a special place in my heart. Dont ever forget that. Promise me that, no matter where the fates leave us, well always find the time to stay in touch because my life wouldnt be the same
"You dont have to worry about that, Ephiny. Xena and I will be knocking on your door so often youll beg us to go away!," she managed to joke despite the fact that the Amazons words had left a lump in her throat.
"Know that youll always be welcome in my home...no matter where that may be...," her voice dissipated.
"Ephiny?," the bards eyes widened. "Are you thinking about leaving the village?"
"I dont know yet," she sighed. "Charis and I havent discussed it, but Xenan...Gabrielle, I need to be with him more than I am."
"You miss him, dont you?," the bard sounded sad as her mind briefly shifted to thoughts of her lost Hope. Though she knew Xena was right. Hope was merely a vessel, a breeding ground for Dahaks evil. But still, thoughts of the child she had carried and given birth to, the child that eventually killed Xenas only son, managed to cross her mind from time to time.
"Yeah, I dont think I can stand to be away from him much longer," the Regents response interrupted the bards introspection.
"Hes a wonderful child, Ephiny. I miss him too, to tell you the truth. Ive grown attached to him," she managed a feeble smile as she picked up the brush from the bed and started to brush the Amazons hair.
"Gods, Im going to miss you!," Ephiny suddenly exclaimed.
"And Im going to miss you," the bard returned her sentiment. She moved further onto the bed and rested her back against the wall before coaxing the Amazon into her arms. Ephiny settled between the bards outstretched legs, her back against her queen.
"Gabrielle?," she ran her hands over the bards arms as she spoke. "I want you to know that Ill never forget everything weve shared."
"I know," Gabrielle whispered. "Neither will I," she assured her. The two women talked for some time before finally falling asleep.
"Hi," Charis said to Ephiny in a hushed tone, rousing her from her slumber.
"Charis...how late is it?," she asked, attempting to get up without waking the bard.
"Its the middle of the night. Ive been out checking the parameters with Eponin. Sorry I took so long. We also had some things to discuss regarding the ceremony. Dont get up. Youll wake her," she gestured toward the sleeping queen. "Just move over," she said as she removed her boots and climbed into bed.
Gabrielle woke to find herself wedged in between the two women. She moved her eyes back and forth, first looking at Ephiny, then at Charis. "This is certainly different," she thought to herself. "How am I going to explain to Xena that I slept with not one, but two Amazons while she was away?," she chuckled to herself.
"Ouch!," Charis was startled from sleep when the bard accidentally fell on her as she tried to crawl out of bed.
"Sorry," Gabrielle whispered, her feet at last on the floor. Today was going to be a busy day as there was much to do before the ceremony. "Xenas coming back tomorrow," she thought to herself. Instantly in a chipper mood, she poured a cup of cider and walked outside. Taking a seat on the steps, she gazed at the colorful sunrise, content in the knowledge that the warrior was somewhere nearby staring up at the same magnificent sky.
"Good morning," Charis voice interrupted her thoughts. "Sleep well?"
"Yeah, I did actually. Sorry I invaded your bed."
"I didnt mind. Besides, youre the Queen so the bed is rightfully yours."
"Well, if you want to get technical," the bard grinned.
"You have a big day ahead of you."
"Yes, I do. But Im excited about it," the Queen said, sipping her cider.
"I respect Xena. I cant think of a better partner for my queen," she offered her approval.
"Shes a remarkable woman, thats for sure," Gabrielle smiled. "So is Ephiny, you know," she added.
"Yes...she is. She means everything to me," she sighed.
"I know," the bard briefly placed her hand on the Amazons before returning to her cider.
"Gabrielle?," Charis spoke uneasily. "Ephiny talked to me about...about all thats happened between the two of you over the past months and...," she noticed the bard holding her breath. "And I want you to know that I dont resent you for any reason--not that I should. I just wanted to be sure there arent any misunderstandings between us," she assured her.
"Charis...," the sun glanced off the Queens golden hair as she turned to face the Amazon. "Im glad you and Ephiny are together. I couldnt be happier," she was sincere as she spoke. "I know how much you mean to each other. Youre good together and, from what Ephinys told me, you always have been," she gave her an affectionate look. "Theres nothing to worry about. Unless, of course, you ever hurt her. Then Ill be forced to track you down and kick your butt," she grinned, only half-joking.
"And Id expect you to, but I dont anticipate that there will be any need for a butt-kicking as far as thats concerned," she chuckled. "I intend to see to it that she and Xenan have a good life."
"I trust that you will,"
the bard smiled warmly. "Well...," she stood to stretch
her muscles. "Id better get some breakfast. Im
sure Ill be too busy to eat soon."
"Actually, I need to see you after you eat. Would you mind going with me to make sure that your mask is the way you want it?," she requested.
"Absolutely! Cant have a faulty mask now, can we?," she gleefully responded, the mere idea of the ceremony making her giddy.

Charis and Gabrielle entered the hut, the shade offering solace from the hot summer sun. The busy Amazons stopped what they were doing, reverently bowing their heads as the Queen made her entrance. "As you were," the bard stated, still not used to the royal treatment bestowed on her. "This way," Salir lead the two women to the back of the hut where two Amazons proceeded to unveil the ceremonial mask. "Is this suitable?," she asked.
"The gods!," Gabrielle seemed mesmerized. "Its brilliant!," she exclaimed as she examined the lavish work of art before her, each detail flawlessly executed.
"Im glad you approve," Salir smiled, delighted by her queens approval.
"Whats next?," the bard asked Charis as the two made their way across the village.
"Were going to see Ephiny. Shes been busy all morning making certain that the clothes you picked out are as you specified. Im sure shell want you to try them on in case there are any final adjustments to be made." Remembering that she still needed to meet with the Eponin about the food for the feast to follow the ceremony, she picked up her pace as she spoke.
"Hows it going, sweetheart?," Charis asked as she planted a kiss on Ephinys cheek. Several Amazons raised their eyebrows, trading knowing glances in response to the exchange between the two women.
"Better, now that youre here," she smiled at her love. "Gabrielle! The outfit you picked out is right over here," she was enthusiastic as she guided her toward the bed, where several Amazons sat, diligently working at stitching beads. "Oh, Ephiny...," the bards eyes widened. "I love it."
"Want to try it on?," the Regent asked.
"Can I?," she asked, her expression very much like that of a child on Solstace morning.
"Well, yes. It is yours," Ephiny chuckled at her queens girlish enthusiasm. "Amazons, clear out," the Regent ordered.
"What do you think?," Gabrielle asked, modeling her attire for Charis and the Regent.
"The gods...," Ephiny, dumfounded by her queens beauty, spoke in hushed tone. "You look stunning."
"Gorgeous!," Charis exclaimed.
"Do you think Xena will like it?," Gabrielle asked sheepishly.
"If she doesnt, Id suggest she have her eyes examined!," Charis declared.
"Shes going to love it," Ephiny placed an arm around her friends shoulders. "How does it feel?"
"Its perfect," the bard assured her, obviously smitten with the ensemble.
"Youd better get changed. Nahem is waiting for you in the medicine hut," Charis informed the Queen.
Gabrielle sat on the floor of the darkened hut with her legs crossed. Her eyes closed, she breathed deeply as she listened to Nahems soothing voice. The renewal ritual was meant to prepare her for the new life she would lead once the ceremony had taken place. Nahem chanted in an attempt to encourage the bard to extricate the opposing forces of her past and thus forge a new path for herself and her love. A path free of past inequity which could corrupt their union if not eliminated.
One by one, the bard let go of her transgressions--those she had committed and those committed against her. Nahems voice grew louder as the Queen wept, descending again as her tears disappeared. Gabrielle took in one final deep breath and opened her eyes, a tranquil look emerging on her face. "You are ready, my Queen," Nahem affirmed.
The bard walked slowly toward the center of the village, weary from the days events, the sounds emanating from her stomach persistently reminding her that it had been several hours since her last meal. This would be the last night she would spend without the warrior. And tomorrow, amid the song and dance, she and Xena would profess their love, joining their lives forever.

The warrior carefully placed the leather case in her satchel, a smile washing over her face as she tried to picture the look on the bards face when she presents her with the gift. She had sent word to Sappho ahead of time and, immediately upon leaving the village, she traveled to the Isle of Lesbos. Sappho, who had been awaiting her arrival, graciously welcomed her. "For Artemis chosen one," she had said to the warrior when she handed her the leather case containing her first quill and a short note which read: From one slave of the scroll to another. May your spirit live on in your words. Highest regards, Sappho.
Gabrielle had always had a deep appreciation for Sapphos writings. Xena knew the bard would, without a doubt, love the gift. But she also hoped that, by giving it to her, she could make up for all the times she had failed to pay adequate attention to her work. She had never meant to slight her and she was certainly aware of her talent. But one of the things she had regretted most when she thought she would never see Gabrielle again was that she had failed to read all of her scrolls. And, as soon as she had the chance, she intended to delve into each and every one of them, savoring each exquisite morsel of her loves labor.

"Huh uh," Ephiny muttered, swiping the tray of food the bard was about to dive into.
"Hey!," she blurted out.
"Youre supposed to be fasting, remember?," the Regent reminded her.
"Oh...yeah. Guess Im so preoccupied about tomorrow that I forgot about the ritual fast," she attempted to excuse herself.
"Mmm hmm," Ephiny uttered, not entirely convinced. "Of all things, the fast slips your mind," she teased. "Youll have plenty to eat at the celebration tomorrow. Now, come on. We still have a few more things to do before nightfall," she took the bards hand, nearly dragging her away from the table.
* * * * * * * *
"You will be staying here with me and Charis tonight, right?," the Regent asked as she removed the bandages from the bards right shoulder blade.
"Uh huh," Gabrielle nodded in agreement. "How does it look?," she eagerly inquired.
"See for yourself," Ephiny answered, shifting the mirrors into position to allow the Queen to view the masterpiece created by the Regent herself.
"Wow...," Gabrielle was clearly pleased with the tattoo which depicted a chakram overlapping a scroll, signifying the merging of her life with Xenas. "Shes going to love it! Thank you, Ephiny," she gave her an appreciative hug.
"Im so glad you like it," she smiled. "Now...I have a few things to do for tomorrow. Is there anything else you need before I get started?"
"No. Thanks. I have everything I need. Actually, Im exhausted. I thought Id turn in early tonight," she yawned.
"Goodnight then. And Gabrielle?," her fondness for her queen shown in her eyes. "I hope tomorrow is everything youve always dreamed it would be."
"Thank you for everything youve done for us, Ephiny. I cant tell you how much its meant to us. Goodnight," she said as she headed for the bed. The bard fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
The Regent sat at the table, engrossed in the parchment before her. "Perfect," she whispered to herself when she had finished reading the words. She rolled the scroll carefully and placed it in a drawer for safe keeping before quietly crossing the room. She stood next to the bed, gazing down on the sleeping Queen, offering a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess.

The warrior arrived in the village at dawn, settling Argo in the stables before making her way to the field. Eponin, Ephiny, and several other Amazons were awaiting her arrival. "Xena," the Regent spoke her name as she greeted her with open arms. "How did everything go?," she asked, particularly referring to her trip to Lesbos.
"As planned," the warrior sounded nervous as she spoke.
"Jitters?," Ephiny chuckled, noticing her tenseness.
"Oh yeah," Xena sighed, her hands visibly trembling.
"Lets talk," the Regent led her away from the crowd. "Spill it," she insisted once the two were out of earshot of the others.
"Well...Eph...Ephiny...I...um...its just that...," she tried in vain to form a sentence. "Hows Gabrielle?," she finally blurted out.
"Zeus! Youve got it bad, dont you?," she guided the warrior toward a pile of stacked fire wood, gesturing for her to sit. "Youre a bundle of nerves," she pointed out as she rubbed Xenas shoulders and neck in an attempt to eliminate the tightness in her muscles. "Gabrielles just fine. Now whats going on in your head?"
"Ive had a lot of time to think," she began again, relinquishing herself to the Amazons soothing caresses. "Ive put Gabrielle in danger so many times...," she paused in thought. "Ephiny, I cant stand the thought of anything bad happening to her."
"Xena, if theres one thing I know about Gabrielle, its that she loves to travel with you. In the time that Ive known her, shes never been one to turn her back on a challenging experience. She enjoys your expeditions. She needs diversity in her life. Shed be bored senseless without it. You know that," she attempted to reassure her friend.
"Yeah, I guess youre right," the warrior sighed. "This love thing has a way of transforming you, doesnt it?," she chuckled.
"Yep, it does. But Ive found that most of the changes it brings are positive," she reminded her. "Xena, its only natural that you worry about Gabrielles well-being. But you cant allow that concern to stifle her or yourself. Gabrielle knows what shes getting into...the question is, do you?," she jested.
The warrior managed to laugh before saying, "I know youre right. I just want her to have a good life. I need to know that Im the best that I can be for her, you know?"
"Yes, believe me, I know," Charis crossed her mind. "She loves you, Xena. The two of you share something that doesnt come along every day. Everythings going to be fine," she assured her.
"Thank you, Ephiny," she said, turning her head from side to side, stretching the muscles in her neck. "Im ready now," she smiled, her uneasiness now extinguished.
"Lets go," she directed the warrior back to the clearing, where the group of women were still gathered. "I need to get back to the Queens hut to be with Gabrielle. I just wanted to see you before the ceremony. I know shes going to ask about you, so I figured Id better make sure I saw you ahead of time. Eponins going to handle the warrior ritual. Enjoy yourself."
"Tell her I love her and that I cant wait," the warrior requested.
"You got it," Ephiny promised as she headed off to meet the bard.
* * * * * * * *
"Is she here? How is she? Where is she? Whats she doing?," the bard rambled on as she greeted the Regent at the door.
"Yes, shes here. Shes fine. Shes with Eponin and the others, carrying out the warrior ritual," she was tickled by her friends wide-eyed welcome. "She asked me to tell you that she loves you and that shes looking forward to the ceremony."
"Shes so wonderful," the bard swooned. "So...what am I supposed to do next?," she asked.
"Actually, youre going to love this," the Amazon told her. "Its time for the bathing ritual," she said as several Amazons made their way up the stairs leading inside the hut.
"I have to go naked through the village?," the nude bard covertly whispered to the Regent.
"No!," she chuckled. "Here," she said handing her a ceremonial robe.
"Wo!," the queen exclaimed as six statuesque women lifted the ornate pallet on which she was seated. "Im getting seasick," she whispered to the Regent who was walking beside her, grateful that her mask hid the unrepressed grin on her face.
The procession made its way through the village to the hot springs where the Amazons gently lowered the pallet onto a platform that had recently been erected for the occasion. Ephiny removed her mask before commencing with her speech. Upon its conclusion, the Queen was assisted to her feet and off with her robe. Gabrielle walked between two robed Amazons as the Regent looked on while the rest of the women fell to their knees, their heads solemnly lowered. When they reached the waters edge, her two escorts removed their masks. They led the bard into the water which was covered with floating rose petals. Once seated in the warm springs, the Queen gave herself over as the women proceeded to wash her body. "If Xena saw this, shed say To Tartarus with Amazon rituals! Get your hands off her!," she thought to herself, trying not to upset the seriousness of the moment.
Ephiny could tell Gabrielle was thinking something mischievous by the look on her face. She fought to maintain her stoic appearance as she imagined what might be running through the bards mind. Standing at the edge of the springs, the Regent watched as the rite was carried out.

Xena stood, sword in hand, in the center of the circle of Amazon warriors. "Amazons, proceed!," Eponin, perched on a platform high above the activity, gave the command to begin the ritual. The sounds of drumbeats and melodic chanting invaded the air as the circle of weapon-wielding women started to move on every side of the warrior.
Salir, donning the mask of the Amazon warrior, entered the ring and raised her sword, challenging her to a demonstrative contest. When their swords clashed, the drums instantly fell silent. All grew still, saving that which was taking place inside the circle. The exhibition continued until Eponin called for its end. "Desist!," her voice resounded across the field. Salir lowered her head respectfully in the direction of the warrior before turning around and rejoining the circle. Xena held her sword over her head with both hands before driving it into the earth. On cue, she clasped her hands above her head displaying the Amazon sign of peace, the women surrounding her returning her gesture. "We welcome you as our sister," Eponins announcement sparked an outburst of applause and cheers of approval. Xena retrieved her sword and soon found herself lost in a sea of well-wishing Amazons.
* * * * * * * *
The sun shining overhead, the warrior watched the dancers, her heart beating in time with the pounding rhythm of the drums. She stood in the midst of the activity wearing her usual attire, sans weapons, waiting for her love to appear.
Ephinys feet were planted firmly on the sun-baked ground when she gave the order, "Amazons, fall back!" The performers instantly came to rest, the silence nearly deafening as it fell on Xenas ears. A slow, steady drumbeat ensued, bringing the participants to their knees, including the warrior. The Queen walked slowly, hidden from view by the group of masked Amazons who were escorting her. Behind her own mask, Gabrielle was smiling at the striking sight of her love as she knelt in front of the Regent.
"Royal Guard, dismissed!," Ephinys voice rang out again. Gabrielles escorts removed her mask and stepped aside, allowing Xena to get her first look at her love.
Xena nearly keeled over at the sight of her. "That outfit. Those eyes. Those legs. Those abs," she thought to herself. "The gods, shes trying to kill me."
"Stand," the Regent gave the order, bringing the audience to their feet. "You are not only asking for the hand of one of our sisters. You are asking for the hand of our queen," Ephinys tone was impressive as she addressed the warrior. "What can you offer her?"
Eponin stepped forward, holding the leather case containing Sapphos quill. "I hold in my hand her gift to our queen," she announced, handing the case to the warrior.
"Proceed," the Regent nodded.
Xena turned to her love and began to speak. "Gabrielle, I give you this gift as a token of my devotion to you and our life together," her voice quaked. The bard accepted the box, tears filling her eyes when she saw what was inside. Amazon custom dictating that she wasnt to speak, as she looked at the warrior, her eyes spoke volumes.
"My queen," Ephiny addressed the bard. "Do you have a gift for Xena?"
Gabrielle carefully handed the leather case to Eponin and placed her arms by her sides. Charis approached her, positioning her with her back toward the warrior. Xenas eyes grew glassy as the Amazon pulled the back of Gabrielles top over her shoulder, exposing her tattoo. The Queens clothing was then restored and she and the warrior turned to face the Regent, but not before Gabrielle took in a glimpse of Xenas glowing expression. The bard was thrilled to know that the warrior was pleased with her gift.
"Xena and Gabrielle," Ephinys affection for the two was expressed in her voice as she glanced down at the scroll she held in her hands. "We come together with you today to witness your joining. One queen. One warrior. One who institutes peace and another who fights to preserve it. Both seeking the same. A hand to hold in times of joy and in times of sorrow. In times of harmony and in times of war. In times of well-being and in times of illness. Casting all others aside, you stand before us seeking to commit yourselves to each other. One queen. One warrior. Each harboring half of the others soul. We delight in your devotion. We rejoice in your decision. We grant you your desire in proclaiming that, from this moment on, you are bonded together, joined in your love. Now...," she lovingly looked at the two women. "We give you the opportunity to profess your love for each other," she nodded at Gabrielle.
"Xena," the bard began. "Today, before Artemis, before my sisters, before the Amazon Nation, I declare my love for you. ...," she fought back her tears. "I promise to love you always, to stand by you no matter what the fates may bring. I give you all that I am, all that Ill ever be. I offer you my body, my soul, my life with the hope that youll have me," she tried to compose herself as she turned to face the Regent, who then swallowed the lump in her throat and motioned for the warrior to speak.
"Gabrielle," she gazed deeply into her loves eyes. "The day I met you, I knew you would somehow find your way inside my heart. Our time together has been priceless and I wouldnt trade a moment of it. Now, as I look toward the future, I realize that I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life loving you. I pledge to you my love, my devotion, my heart and my soul with the hope that youll have me," a warm smile appeared on her lips, nearly melting the bard.
"Gabrielle...my queen," the Regent spoke tenderly. "Will you have Xena as your life partner, denying all others?"
"I will," the bard gazed at her love as she spoke.
"Xena," Ephiny addressed the warrior. "Will you have Gabrielle as your life partner, denying all others?"
"I will," the warrior answered though, as she focused her eyes on the bard, she wanted to shout out, "Tartarus, yeah! Do you think Im crazy?! Of course I accept her!"
"Gabrielle and Xena, I declare that you are bonded for life. Amazons," she suddenly raised her voice. "Your queen requests your approval!" Amidst the roar of the crowd, the Regent shouted out to her friends, "A kiss would be greatly appreciated!" The tribes enthusiasm increased as the couple sealed their union.
"Gods, I love you," Xena whispered between kisses. "Thank you for the gift," she said softly, pausing with her hand on the bards cheek, the crowd still raving.
"Thank you," Gabrielles tears began to flow again as she meshed with her love in an intense embrace. "I love you, Xena." After a few moments, she asked, "How in did you manage to get Sapphos quill?"
"Her first quill," Xena clarified.
"Wow...," the bard sighed as Ephiny stepped forward, her face dampened by her emotion. She grabbed them both at the same time, pulling them close. "Congratulations, you two! Im so happy for you both."
"You did a wonderful job, Ephiny," Xena complimented her.
"We couldnt have asked for a more perfect ceremony," the bard shared the warriors sentiment. "Thank you so much."
"Youre both welcome," the Regent watched with delight as the newly-bonded couple greeted their guests.
"Nice job, sweetheart," Charis came from behind, wrapping her arms around Ephinys waist.
"Thanks," she suddenly lost herself in blue eyes, butterflies dive-bombing her stomach. Unable to resist her, she leaned over and gave her a mind-boggling kiss.
"Remind me to compliment you more often," Charis, reeling from the kiss, sighed. "Youre stuck with each other now!," she teased Xena and Gabrielle once she was finally able to get close enough to them.
"You got that right!," Xena responded, holding on tightly to her love.
"How do you like the tattoo?," Charis asked.
"Oh, Gabrielle! Let me see it again," she requested with enthusiasm as she tugged at the back of the bards top. "I love it. Look at it," she said to Charis. "Its fabulous."
"Oh, Ive seen it. I was there when Ephiny was working on it. But, yes, it is great, isnt it?," Charis responded.
"Ephiny? You did this?," Xena addressed the Regent.
"Guilty," Ephiny responded, raising a hand.
"Its wonderful," the warrior said warmly. "I love it," she smiled at her friend.
"Im glad," she returned her smile. "I was hoping you would."
"Wheres Gabrielle?," Xena noticed that she was no longer by her side.
"See those tables?," Ephiny pointed across the way. "Theres food on every one of them and Gabrielle hasnt eaten for quite some time," she grinned.
"Ahh," the warrior nodded. Excusing herself, she began to make her way through the crowd toward the area where the feast was already getting underway.
* * * * * * * *
"A toast," the Regent raised her mug. "To the newly-bonded couple, Xena and Gabrielle. My sisters. My friends. My family." The guests, all gathered around the tables, joined in the salute.
"Before you lower your mugs," Charis stood and addressed the crowd. "Id like to make an announcement," she cleared her throat. "The Regent, Ephiny, and I would like to inform you all that we will soon hold yet another bonding ceremony. In a private ceremony tomorrow at noon, Ephiny and I will make a life commitment to each other." The Amazons raised their mugs and their voices in euphoric approval. Most of them had been around back when the couple first fell for each other and many had never stopped hoping that one day, the two would reunite.
"Ephiny!," the bard slapped the Regent on the shoulder. "You didnt tell me! I should slap you again!," and she proceeded to do just that before wrapping her in her arms. "Ive never been happier," she whispered in her ear.
"That makes two of us," the Amazon sighed, pulling her closer to her. "Xenans returning in the morning," she anxiously informed her. Gabrielles eyes got even wider at the news. "Ephiny, thats wonderful...Charis, congratulations!," she turned her attention to the approaching Amazon, offering her a hug.
"Gabrielle, we have you to thank," Charis said.
"We all have each other to thank," she responded, putting her arms around Xenas waist.
"Im happy for you both," the warrior congratulated Ephiny and Charis.
"Of course, we want you both to be at the ceremony," the Regent insisted. "Itll just be the two of you and Xenan. Eponins presiding."
"Absolutely," Xena accepted.
"We wouldnt miss it for the world!," the bard chimed, now chomping away on a slice of bread.
The two couples and their Amazon sisters celebrated the union and the imminent ceremony until well past sunset. The bard ate and drank everything in sight while Xena watched in amazement, wondering how it was that such a petite stomach could hold that much food. Her heart sang as she watched her love talking and laughing, making sure she spoke to each and every guest. Never in her wildest dreams had the warrior thought that someday she would know such contentment. And, now that it was hers, she would safeguard it with every fiber of her being.
* * * * * * * *
The Regent and her love lay next to each other under the blankets, listening to the calming sounds of the forest drifting through the window. "Youre going to be a mother tomorrow," Ephiny snuggled closer.
Charis looked up at the ceiling, a concerned expression moving over her face, "How do you suppose Xenans going to feel about that?" She had been praying to Artemis that the boy would grow to love her.
"Are you kidding? Two mothers catering to his every whim? Hes going to be thrilled!," the Regent chuckled.
Charis grew silent as she tried to picture their future. She and Xenan had always gotten along. In fact, he seemed to really enjoy himself when they were together. She had taken him hunting with her more than once and he did love to hear her tell a story. But even so, she hadnt been around him all that much. She only hoped that he would accept her union with Ephiny, that he wouldnt resent being forced to share his doting mother with someone else. "I wanted to give him something to welcome him...," she pondered aloud. "Is there something he would really like to have?"
"Well...," the Regent thought about it. "Hes been wanting his own weapon--I mean a real weapon, as he says. He has a dagger--with a very blunt edge," she clarified. "But I havent actually given him a weapon of his very own yet. I think its time though. I cant be over-protective forever. After all, we had our first weapons by the time we were his age," she recognized.
"Arent you afraid hell hurt himself?," she sounded disquieted.
"Oh gods, Charis! Are you going to be worse than I am?," she teased, secretly glad to see that she was already becoming watchful over him. "And I thought I was bad?!"
"This may sound strange, but I already think of him as my son, Ephiny" she admitted. "Does...does that bother you?," her brow furrowed as she tentatively raised the question.
"No. No, Charis," the Regent raised her head from the warmth of her loves chest and looked into her eyes. "Im glad you feel that way," she spoke quietly, yet assuredly. "He is your child too," she heard herself utter words she thought she would never say after Phantes was killed.
"I want to be a good parent," Charis sighed.
"You will be. Youre already off to a good start," she offered her support, resting her head on Charis shoulder and closing her eyes as sleep beckoned.
* * * * * * * *
The warrior writhed in ecstasy, the cool floor against her back, as the bard cast her spell over her. "The gods, Gabrielle," she nearly screamed when she reached her limit. "Do you have any idea what you do to me?," she whispered, the bard resting her head on her thigh.
"I hope its the same thing you do to me," Gabrielle made her way into Xenas arms.
"Even better," the warrior growled, suddenly flipping the bard onto her back and climbing on top of her, the sweat dripping from her hair landing in puddles on Gabrielles body. She began to move against her, driven by the feel of her skin against her own. Their lips met, sparking a fire. "Can we do this all night?," she begged, sweeping her tongue over the bards shoulders.
"Mmm hmm," Gabrielle moaned, pressing the warriors mouth to her breast. Again and again, the two women surrendered themselves in the dark, each taking delight in the others gratification.
* * * * * * * *
The Regent knocked lightly on the door, not wanting to disturb the Queen and her partner. "Ephiny...hi," Xena peered outside, her hair standing on end. "Come in. Gabrielles still asleep" she whispered, trying not to wake the bard. The warrior, having been awakened by the knock, was wearing only a blanket which she clutched around her bare body.
"Xena, I know its early, but I need to speak to Gabrielle," Ephinys tone was apologetic.
"Ill wake her," she moved toward the bed. "Gabrielle. Gabrielle," she shook her gently.
"Just a few more minutes, Mom," the bard mumbled, still sound asleep. Xena and the Regent tried not to laugh.
"Gabrielle!," Xenas voice startled the bard.
"Wha?," she sat straight up in the bed. "Mmm, Xena," she yawned.
"Gabrielle," the warrior persisted. "Ephinys here. She needs to talk to you."
"Mkay. Im coming," she groaned, pulling on her tunic.
"When is Xenan due to arrive?," the warrior asked while the two waited for the Queen to collect herself.
"His cousin, Zolloff, is escorting him to the edge of the hunting grounds. I have to meet them there soon...Can I see you outside for a moment?," she suddenly requested.
"Yeah," the tired warrior shook her head in an attempt to remain awake. "Mind if I just wear my blanket?"
"Its still dark outside, so I dont think itll matter much," Ephiny grinned.
The bard sat next to the window, looking out at the two shadows. "Wonder what theyre talking about?," she asked herself, noting the serious expressions as what was left of the moon illuminated their faces. "Gods, I must have eaten way too much last night," she belched loudly as she continued her one-sided conversation.
"What in Tartarus was that?!," Xena laughed as she and Ephiny returned inside having concluded their private meeting.
"I have gas," Gabrielle grinned.
"And youre proud of that?," the warrior asked.
"Yep. Very proud," she burped even louder.
"This is what you have to look forward to," Xena raised an eyebrow as she spoke to the Regent.
"Umm, I need to speak to my queen here. Do you suppose you can contain your bodily emissions long enough for me to ask you an official question?," she chuckled.
"Sh..sure, my loyal su..subject," her attempt at sarcasm was now interceded by a severe case of the hiccups.
"The things you eat obviously disagree with your body. We gotta come up with some kind of regimen for you," the Regent continued to trifle with her.
"E..E...Ephiny, g..get to the p...point," she struggled to get the words out.
"Well, as you know, our ceremony is this afternoon. And Charis and I have realized that, in our haste, we somehow forgot to ask you if we could skip the customary rituals in light of the circumstances, with Xenans return and everything..."
"Ephi...Ephiny," the hiccuping bard interrupted. "Are y...you ki...kidding me?"
"Well, no. You are the Queen...and I am a stickler for following custom," she reminded her. "So, in this case, the Amazon code demands that Charis and I get your permission before omitting the customary rituals."
"Hmfff," the bard tried to speak without opening her mouth as she held her breath in an attempt to cure herself.
"Look, Gabrielle! Its Joxer!," the warrior suddenly erupted.
"Where?!," the Queens response revealed her panic.
"Still got the hiccups?," Xena grinned, seemingly pleased with herself.
"Xena! Thats not even funny! Hey...wait a minute. Theyre gone. Thanks! Now, where was I? Oh, yeah," she rambled on. "Ephiny, if it will make you feel better, I officially waive the rituals. Now, go get your son and get bonded already," she smiled, shivering beneath her blanket.
The Regent said her thank yous and good-byes before merrily heading off on her horse. "Gods, its been so long. Wonder how much hes grown since I saw him last?," she said to herself as she entered the forest, the air whistling in her ears as it moved past her.
The closer she got to the meeting place, the faster she demanded her horse to move. "Xenan!," she called out at the sight of her son. Eagerly, she dismounted her horse and ran toward the young Centaur. "Ive missed you," she told him as she held him in her arms.
"Not half as much as Ive missed you," her son clamped his arms around her neck.
"Did you have fun? What did you do? Hows your grandfather?," she flooded him with questions.
"Hes fine. We did lots of neat things," the boy offered a brief reply.
"Thank you, Zolloff," she embraced the Centaur, keeping a watchful eye on Xenan who was pretending that the stick he held in his hand was a sword. "Thank you for taking care of Xenan and for giving me your blessing." She had managed to meet with him by the river previously, where she told him of her plans to bond with Charis. She had hoped the news wouldnt cause a rift between her and Phantes relatives as she didnt want there to be a barrier between Xenan and his fathers family.
"I wish you the best, Ephiny. We all do," he said earnestly.
"Did you get a chance to tell him?," she wondered whether or not Xenan knew about her and Charis.
"Yes, I did. He took it very well...said he really likes her," the Centaur smiled.
"Thank the gods," the Regent sighed in relief. She wouldve told Xenan herself but she knew the presence of a male, no matter how young or what his relationship to the Regent, would only be tolerated in the Amazon village for a short while. And the "no males" policy was one she had never wished to challenge. Furthermore, she certainly didnt want her son to receive first-word of it on the morning of the ceremony. She had wanted him to have an opportunity to digest the news before his return.
"Take care of yourself, Ephiny. And, please...bring the boy to visit us soon," Zolloff requested.
"I will. You have my word," she assured him as she climbed onto her horse. "Xenan! Are you ready?," she called out.
"Yep," he smiled, moving to her side.
"I have something that I want to talk to you about," she spoke softly, her stomach starting to churn. "What did Zolloff say to you about Charis?"
"He said you love her and she loves you. He said were all going to be together forever," he looked up at her with doe eyes.
"Thats right," she reaffirmed. "And how do you feel about that?," she tried to keep her voice from shaking as she asked the question.
"Good," he said simply before adding, "I like Charis. We have fun together...Mom?," he waited for her response.
"Yes?," she held her breath.
"Are you happy?," he studied her face.
"Yes, son. Im very happy," she smiled, reaching down to muss his hair before exclaiming, "Ill race you back!"
"And Ill beat you like I always do!," he informed her as he ran ahead of her.
"Yah!," the Amazon nudged her horse with her heals. The truth was, she usually let her son win their races, but not by much. This time, however, he was winning on his own. Granted, the head start she gave him and the fact that he was lower to the ground put him at an advantage. Still, she marveled at his agility as he raced through the trees.
"No way, Mom!," he shouted as she came up on his heels. "Gotcha!," he exclaimed as he crossed over the river and entered the Amazon hunting grounds.
"Yep. You got me," she conceded.
"Xenan!," Gabrielle called out from a distance. "Come here," she approached him. "Let me look at you. Youre getting so big," she smiled at the child.
"Mom says so too," he bashfully returned her smile.
"Ephiny, is there anything I can do to help you get ready for...," Gabrielle stopped herself, afraid she might be about to say something she shouldnt.
"Get ready for the ceremony?," Xenan asked. The bard, not knowing how she should respond, looked to Ephiny.
"Thats right, Xenan. For the ceremony," the Amazon confirmed, winking at her queen.
"Is there anything I can do?," Gabrielle asked again.
"Just be there at noon. Your presence--thats all I need," Ephinys words were warm. "Were on our way to the hut to see Charis," she bit her lip as she spoke.
"Yeah! Charis!," Xenan excitedly shouted. "Hurry up, Mom! Bye, Gabrielle!," he called as he ran ahead of the Regent again.
"Things seem to be going well so far," the bard seemed pleased.
"Yes, they really are. Im so relieved!," Ephiny admitted.
"Good luck...with everything. Well be there just before noon," she said before the two parted.
Ephiny watched as Xenan neared the Queens hut. She knew Charis was inside gnawing on her fingernails, terrified of the reunion that was about to take place.
* * * * * * * *
"Wait, Xenan!," Ephiny tried not to sound like she was in a panic as she instructed the child to let her catch up before entering the hut. Her hands trembled as she secured her horse to a post. "Its now or never," she thought to herself, placing her hand on her sons back as she gradually pushed the door open.
"Charis, look whos here," the Regent announced, trying to smile through her anxiety.
"Hi, Xenan," Charis spoke softly, her body shaking so adamantly that she nearly tipped her chair over as she stood to greet the boy.
Much to Ephinys dismay, her son immediately hid behind her. "Xenan?," her heart began to sink as tears threatened Charis eyes. "Shhh," the Regent heard the whisper coming from behind her back. "Were playing a game," he said in a hushed tone.
"Oh!," Charis began to breathe easier. "Its brown and black!," she blurted out. Ephiny still didnt have the slightest clue what they were doing.
"Wrong!," Xenan moved from behind his mother. "Its brown and white! See!," he scurried over to Charis, pointing toward his forehead.
The Regent realized that her mouth was hanging open as Charis began to explain. "His headband. Hes wearing a brown and white headband today," she smiled. "So, Xenan...did you have a nice time in the Centaur village?," she placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah! It was great! I got to use a real bow and arrow!," he proudly claimed.
"You did?" Charis sounded enthusiastic as Ephiny struggled to keep from crying. Losing the battle, she excused herself and walked outside onto the steps.
"Ephiny?," Eponin made her way toward the weeping Regent.
"Eponin!," she threw her arms around the unsuspecting Amazons neck.
"Whats going on?," Eponin was clearly concerned.
"He likes her!," Ephiny jumped up and down in place, her hands clutching her friends shoulders.
"Who likes who?," Eponin looked confused as she realized that the Regent was laughing and crying at the same time.
"Xenan! He likes Charis!"
"Gods, I thought something was wrong!," Eponin exclaimed. "Thats great, Ephiny. Im so glad," she smiled warmly, knowing how worried the Regent had been. "Hey--Im headed toward the stables. Ill take your horse back if youd like?," she asked, noticing the animal tied to the post.
"Id appreciate it."
"No problem," she said as she untied the horse. "Ill be back in plenty of time for the ceremony," she told her as she rode away.
The Regent dried her eyes and made her way back inside where she found Charis and Xenan playing cards. "Would you like to play?," Charis asked Ephiny.
"I think Ill sit this one out," she answered, content in watching the two interact. In an effort to look nonchalant, she poured herself a mug of cider and pretended to be interested in reading the blank scroll in front of her. Peering out of the corner of her eye, she listened attentively to the conversation ensuing between her son and Charis as they passed cards back and forth between them.

"What are you two scheming?," the bard asked Xena and Ephiny upon finding them engaged in yet another mysterious discussion.
"Oh, nothing," Ephiny diverted her eyes.
"Nothing, huh? Is that why you were whispering?," Gabrielle persisted.
"Youre so nosy!," Xena laughed.
"Hey, guys," Charis and Xenans entrance interrupted the exchange.
"Hiya, Xenan," the warrior smiled.
"Do you have a hug for your Aunt Xena?," Ephiny addressed her son.
Xenan gladly complied. "Thats neat!," he said, in awe of the warriors chakram.
"Xenan?," Charis gained his attention. "Whats that sticking out from behind the bed?," she glanced at the Regent.
"Wow!," the young Centaur stared in amazement at the bow he held in his hand.
"Its yours," Charis informed him. "You understand that this is a weapon and not a toy?"
"I understand," he pledged. "Toys are for fun. Weapons are for hunting and self-defense," he professed, his incisiveness clearly impressing everyone in the room.
"Thats right. And youll need these," she said as she handed him three arrows. "But you have to promise me and your mother that you wont use it unless one of us is with you. Promise?," she looked down at him.
"I promise!," he happily agreed. "Hey! These are Centaur arrows!," he noted, carefully inspecting them.
"Right again," Charis replied, initiating a discussion about weapons which soon had the two lost in their own little world.
"Shes really good with him," the Regent sighed as she addressed Xena and Gabrielle.
"Yes, she is," the bard agreed.
"Looks like its time," Xena peered out the window at Eponin who was making her way toward the hut.
"Come in, Eponin," Ephiny greeted her at the door.
"You two ready?," Eponin inquired.
"Never more ready," Ephiny answered.
The warrior and the Queen stood next to their friends as Charis and the Regent pledged their love. Xenan listened attentively as the ceremony progressed, his focus shifting from one woman to the other as he watched his mother seal their fate. "You forgot something!," he unexpectedly blurted out at the conclusion of the ceremony. Ephiny and Charis, mid-kiss, turned their heads toward him, a curious expression spanning both of their faces.
"Hmmm?," the Regent replied, reluctantly tearing herself away from the kiss.
"She forgot to tell you to kiss me," he puckered his lips.
"Hes so cute!," the bard whispered to the warrior as she and Xena discreetly covered their smiles with their hands.
"I beg your pardon," Eponin announced, successfully managing to hide her amusement. "You are now free to kiss your son," she corrected herself.
"Alright! Thats enough!," Xenan, pinned between the two women, blushed as each of them claimed one of his cheeks, smothering his face with kisses.
"You sure?," Ephiny asked. "There are plenty more where those came from."
"One more from you," her instructed and his mother complied. "And one more for you," he turned to Charis who promptly placed her lips on his cheek and blew as hard as she could sending the child into a fit of laughter.
The group remained together in the hut long enough to have a meal consisting of leftovers from the previous days feast. After the newly-betrothed couple thanked Eponin for her services, she and the Regent disappeared. The two sat outside talking for quite some time.
"Youll be fine," Ephiny assured the Amazon at the close of their discussion.
"I hate to see you go," Eponin said in a somber tone, reaching out to hug her friend.
"Im counting on you," she whispered as she held her.
"Goodbye."
"Goodbye, my friend," Ephiny slowly turned away and headed back inside the hut.
Gabrielle sat next to Xenan, her jaws becoming more and more full as she shoved bite after bite of cold bread into her mouth. "We have to make some more of this stuff!," she suggested to the Regent, her eyes losing their glow when she realized that she and Ephiny would be parting soon. Her mind began to replay the memories that she and her friend had made during their time together. She knew this day would come, but now that it had arrived, she couldnt fathom actually telling her goodbye.
* * * * * * * *
"Do we have everything?," the warrior asked Gabrielle upon returning from the stables with Argo.
"Yeah, I think so," the bard looked distant as she gathered the last of their things and made her way outside carrying her satchel over her shoulder, closing the door behind her for the last time. Though she looked forward to traveling with Xena again, she knew she was going to miss the Regent terribly. Leaving was especially hard now that she had seen Xenan again. She hated the idea of missing out on his youth. Although she managed to find some comfort in knowing that she and the warrior would visit more often than they had in the past, she felt uneasy not knowing where Ephiny and Charis were headed. Now she would have to wait for them to send word before she even knew their whereabouts and that could take forever.
"Gabrielle?," the warrior interrupted her thoughts. "We did forget a couple of things," she insisted.
"What?," the bard looked puzzled.
"Them," Xena smiled as she pointed toward the center of the village.
"Xena? Are they...," she was definitely surprised.
"Yep...That is, if you dont object?"
"Object? Object?!," she shouted. "Are you crazy?! Of course I dont object!"
"Everyone ready to go?," the Regent said coolly as she climbed down from her horse.
"Ephiny!," Gabrielle shouted as she ran toward her friend, throwing her arms around her, knocking her off her feet.
"Ouch, my butt!," the Regent exclaimed, both Charis and Xenan giggling at her.
"Youre really coming with us?," Gabrielle sat on Ephinys stomach, pinning her to the ground, one leg on either side of her friend.
"Not if your going to sit on me the entire time," the Regent joked before her tone grew serious. "Weve decided to settle in Athens," she told the bard. "Xena tells me that you two will end up there before long, so we thought we would travel with you for a while. Doesnt matter if we take the long road. We arent in a big hurry," she smiled.
"Im so happy!," she finally got to her feet, freeing the trapped Amazon. "But...Ephiny?," she suddenly sounded worried. "Youre the Regent? Both of us cant leave the village?"
"Ive already appointed Eponin. Shell act as queen in my absence just as I assumed the position in yours," she explained. "Is...is that acceptable?," she humbly asked.
"Eponin would have been my choice. But then, you knew that, didnt you?"
"I guessed, " the Regent smiled as she climbed back onto her horse.
"You kept this from me?," Gabrielle asked Xena who was standing next to Argo.
"Yep. I did a good job of it too, didnt I?," the warrior laid a huge kiss on her. Ephiny and Charis gave each other a look while Xenan giggled as the kiss lingered on and on.
"Alright, ladies!," Charis intruded. "Save something for later," she laughed.
"Oh, sorry," the bard looked as if she had forgotten that she and Xena werent alone.
"I understand," Ephiny assured her. "Xenas a great kisser," she winked at the warrior who was, by now, perched on Argos back.
Xena and Ephiny moved ahead, taking the lead, Xenan walking between them. Gabrielle and Charis were trailing behind when the bard asked Charis, "What did she mean, Xenas a great kisser? How would she know unless...," her words dissipated as her mind raced.
"You got me," Charis was stumped. "Come on," she reached down and pulled Gabrielle onto the back of her horse. "Hey! We want to ask you two something!," she shouted as she and the bard attempted to catch up to the women who seemed to be pulling further and further ahead of them.
"Should we explain it to them?," the Regent asked Xena as they forged ahead.
"Nah. Let em wonder," Xena chuckled.
