6TH Grader Surfs Porn; Logs Onto Suspension
Holly-Smith Grade School received an unwelcome surprise last Monday when instructors discovered that 11 year-old Harry Toll had been accessing Internet porn sites during computer class. Supposedly under the protective care of NetCrib and CyberTattle (Internet companies which provide schools and parents protection from just this sort of moral infraction), the clever 6TH grader was able to access unsuitable websites via an alternate modem hookup.
“I first heard the giggling,” recalls veteran computer instructor Kyle Reed of the incident. “When I went over to investigate I saw a cluster of students gathered around Harry's monitor. He had downloaded a video of a woman smoking a cigarette with her vagina. I immediately turned off the computer and sent Harry to Ms. Franklin's office for proper reprimand.”
The head Principal at Holly-Smith Grade School for the past 37 years, Ms. Franklin found herself totally unprepared for Harry's office arrival. “Well, the young man was laughing, for one thing. Harry was oblivious to the harm he had caused the class, and himself.” Used to dealing with playground scuffles and cafeteria food fights, Ms. Franklin was forced to place Harry under a five-week suspension, giving the local school board time to fully consider the matter. “When Mr. Reed showed me the video of that woman on Harry's computer, I was stunned,” remembers Ms. Franklin. “It certainly seemed like some sort of criminal violation to me.”
Jerry Toll couldn't disagree more. A single father and owner of Toll Landscaping, Jerry defends his son's behavior as merely a lesson in puberty. “When I was a kid it was all about stealing cigarettes from your Grandma's purse, or sneaking a peak into your sister's bedroom while she dressed for church. Teen boys today are no different; they just have their balls drop over the net.” Although admitting that his son exercised poor judgment in class that afternoon, Jerry thinks the five-week suspension is absurd. “My son is curious about girls. What's the crime in that?”
The school board will most certainly have a different view on the subject. While porn videos and pictures were indeed prevalent on Harry's hard drive, cookies (Internet bread crumbs) also pointed out frequent visits to violent websites such as Steak and Cheese, Motivated By Rage, and the sexually gruesome Stile Project.
Noted child psychologist Dr. Kelly Fremmer is the founding member of POOOS (Porn Out Of Our Schools), an organization currently lobbying Congress to remove all computer curriculums from the grade school level. “Our young children should be learning about Noah's Ark and basic addition, not about golden showers and snowballs. I mean, what exactly is the point to this sort of madness? When we allow our children access to whatever they want whenever they want it, then what sort of society are we breeding? We simply must remove Internet access from the grade school level before unwanted pregnancy comes down into the single-digit age group.”
In the meantime 11 year-old Harry Toll will stay at home nursing a five-week suspension, a personal computer in his bedroom waiting to be accessed. It's a morality mugging just waiting to happen.
