In The News:
Can anyone say "Ma-Bell"? Very good, now try "Ma-Crosoft"! Everyone in this country is acting as if this is the first major breakup in the history of Corporate America. I'm afraid not. For those of you too young to remember, the company MaBell, the only phone company in the U.S., was broken up about 20 years ago by the same set of decisions that is treatening to break up Microsoft. MaBell, it was decided, was too big for its britches, and was divided into several small, regional sections such as Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell, etc.
Although a different sort of breakup is heading Microsoft's way, the concept will be the same. The splitting of one Collossal company into two mearly Enormous companies is thought to spur competition that was previously lacking (Chicago Tribune, Internet Ed., Apr 30).
There is only one problem in this whole scheme.... The same people who run Microsoft now will run the two smaller companies (which, by the way, I think should be named "Nano-Soft" and "Pica-Soft"). Does anyone really think the two companies are going to compete like we think they are? Of you that do, do you really think reindeer can fly? Duh!!
For now, we can live in the fantasy world where evil is punished for wronging the working man. But when we wake up, we are sure to discover not one, but two companies screwing us over and making us by computers every five minutes.
Yay, Capitalism!!!
So let it be posted, so let it be done.
