In The News:
Right now, in the United States, there is a small boy who was found washed up on the Florida shore after the boat which contained him and his mother sank off the coast. Now, the American family of the child, now in Miami, is fighting to keep him in the United States against the wishes of..... the entire island of Cuba.
Aparently, America is such a horrible, evil place that the Cuban people want the boy back home with his father. Also, Cuba is such a dirty little island that the boy's American family wants him to stay here in the States. Now, the American people, including Attorney General Janet Reno, and large mobs of Cuban protesters are in a fight to decide the boy's future.
The funny thing in this whole debacle is that I haven't seen anyone ask what the boy wants. Stay or go, it makes the whole world very little difference. The only person truly affected by this decision is the boy. So, why not let him make it?
In an ironic twist of fate, the two sides that are at furious odds over the matter are in agreement over one fundamental thing. They both agree that the boy cannot make decisions for himself. To me, that sounds just like two bickering girls fighting over the quarterback. Both are so afraid that he won't pick her that neither let him get a word in edgewise. Two entire nations are caught in the grips of a fear of rejection from a six-year-old boy.
Both sides say it is the principal of the thing. The only principal should be the boy's happiness. Just because he picks one country over another isn't some national bragging right. Let him choose, and get on with his life.
So let it be posted, so let it be done.
