One of the village elders doing a traditional "meke"... This gentleman epitomizes what we considered the "gentle giants" of Melanesia. He was a stout older gentleman, probably about 5'7" tall, but his feet were ENORMOUS! I would guess they were at least 5 inches wide, and well over a foot long. My guess is he had never had a pair of shoes on his feet in his entire life. But he thoroughly enjoyed entertaining a large group of giddy tourists. Note the traditional costume and the ever-present war club. |
