The Birth of Aviation
In the period from December 1903 (when the Wright brothers
made their first powered, controlled flight) to World War One, the airplane was
seen as something of a novelty, and not as a war machine. These early aircraft
were made of wood and linen, and were left in their natural state.
It should be noted that during this period, it was the
French that began using nationality markings on their aircraft, in the form of roundels
that contained the colors of the French flag, the outer ring being red, the
middle ring being white, and the center being blue. The British soon followed
suit, using the roundel design, just reversing the colors, which made it
look more like a target (outer ring blue, middle ring white, center red). The
only other markings at that time were individual aircraft numbers.
