We were a race once. We had a future, a middle, and conceivably an end. All such things, and all such people have ends. It is the destiny of all life to meet with death.

I just had not expected it to poison my soul so profoundly.

The earth is small beneath the vessel we created, a beautiful gem in a starry night, that I can only see for its darker possibilities.

Our world had once been beautiful they say. I remember it in slim slices of memory that visit me on occasion. Unlike those around me I remember little of our planet as it was, but rather recall the pale gray skies of a world destroyed.

I cannot see the Jaridians as Da’an does. He imagines a joining between our species; an attempt to resolve all the wrongs wrought by our predecessors. For me, all that I am is a culmination of what those before me have done.

I shall never have children of my own to pass my mistakes and miscalculations onto.

Instead we shall die, cold and passionless. When I close my eyes I see them: The throngs of humanity watching our
once great race waste away.

For all their potential, I seem powerless to force their cooperation. For all our power and our technology I cannot force them to provide our salvation.

The rest of the Taelon race will die because of fate. They will perish with the turning of a star too far away to be seen by any eye, human or Taelon. I will be different.

I will die because I failed.

The End
