What Do You Pray To?

What do you pray to
When you no longer believe?
When you look at your life
And silently grieve
For all the what-if's and should have's
How do you, your soul, relieve?

What do you tell your child
When they want more to eat?
When the cupboards are bare
And there's nothing sweet?
They didn't ask to be born.
How do you, their needs, meet?

How do you drag
Your tired ass out of bed
When you know there's not one
Coherent thought in your head?
When you don't want to go on,
And you wish you were dead?

When you watch the news,
What do you think?
Children dying simply
Because they stopped for a drink.
Death, war, homeless people
Crying at the kitchen sink.

How do you stop murder
When you feel the urge to kill?
When you're so filled with hate
The anger does chill,
And for your aching heart
There is simply no pill

To give your soul a rest
And your sadness relief,
And you go on each day
Feeling such great grief.
What do you pray to
When you have no belief?
