A
Prayer for Animals
by Albert Schweitzer
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for
our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any
that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that
must be put to death. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for
those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and
kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to
share the blessings of the merciful.
MEMBER OF THE FAMILY
What would I do without you,
My precious, furry friend?..
Part mischief, but all blessing,
and faithful to the end!
You look at me with eyes of love,
You never hold a grudge...
You think I’m far too wonderful
to criticize or judge.
It seems your greatest joy in life
is being close to me...
I think God knew how comforting
your warm, soft fur would be.
I know you think you’re human,
but I’m glad it isn’t true...
The world would be a nicer place
if folks were more like you!
A few short years are all we have,
one day we’ll have to part...
But you, my pet, will always have a
place within my heart.
