"Changes, Pt. 4"
by David (Jax)

Rogue felt the dark and the cold and the wind come in around her. Her breath came out in a sharp, contrasting puff of white. She pulled her jacket tighter around her and brushed her hair out of her face, out of habit.

She looked back to see if Remy had returned. A leaf blowed across the rooftop in place of Remy. "Why can ah ever do something normal?" she silently thought.

"Close your eyes, Rogue," Remy's voice came from behind.

"What are you doing?" she started as she turned back.

"Don't!" he cried out, causing her to just turn around and close her eyes, "Maybe ah can just go home sooner," she reasoned to herself, turning around and shutting her eyes.

Remy sauntered to Rogue and stood in front of her and placed a package in her hands. "Can ah open mah eyes now?"

"Go for it, Rogue."

Rogue opened her eyes and looked at the wrapped gift in her hands, "What is it?" she inquired.

Gambit smiled a sly half-grin. "Well, if I told you, it'd take all the fun out of it. But don't open it here, chere. Open it when we get back. C'mon."

Rogue stood up and pulled down to jacket to flatten out any wrinkles. "Remy, ah just think ah'll fly back. I'm tired, I just wanna get home."

"We can get back fast on my bike."

"Ah know, but I just feel too tired. Ah'll just see you later," she spoke as she hovering above the roof and started off towards the Xavier Mansion.

Remy sighed and pulled his hands through his hair, "Thanks for de evening, too."

Kurt's head lay back against the couch and Ororo lay asleep on his shoulder, both deep in a deserved sleep. Asleep, and unable to hear Rogue return home, through her window. They slept hard, unrestless. Unaware of coming events, unaware of when they could feel so comfortable as to sleep without having doubts, fears and breaks in faith to keep them up at nights.

Rogue slipped out of her jacket and sat in the dark of her room. She placed the gift from Remy on her bed, and looked at it. She reached out to open it, but took back her hand and stood instead to take a quick shower, perhaps to soothe the somber mood she'd been having the past few days.

She opened the door to her room and stepped quietly down the hall, passing the eyes of pictures of friends, of people she knew, people who all had something she didn't. She saw the bathroom light turned on, and hear the sound of a running faucet. She approached the door slower, hearing the door knob click open. "Please don't be someone who wants to talk...." Rogue hoped silently.

Bobby Drake stepped out in his untied robe and boxers and jumped about ten feet when he saw Rogue. "Jeez!! What the hell are you tryin--Rogue!" He caught the fact that his voice was louder than it should be a quickly lowered, "Hey! Rogue, long time, no see."

Rogue's eyes opened widely as to verify who she was seeing, "Bobb-Bobby? What are you doing here?"

"I came back earlier today. The others said you and uh, Remy had gone out. I didn't think I could surprise you until tomorrow. Guess you beat me to that."

Rogue smiled, "Honey, Ah've never seen anyone jump so high," she quietly laughed as she embraced Bobby in a hug, " I really did miss ya, Bobby."

Bobby stepped back and patted her on the back, "Oh, who didn't?" he asked in a joking voice.

Rogue rolled her eyes, but smiled anyway, "Sugah, we better quiet down or we'll wake everyone in the house. I'll talk to you in the morning, 'k?"

Bobby stepped back slowly to his own room and nodded, "Sure thing. Night."

"Night."

**********

Remy rode his motorcycle fast into the garage and stopped it screechingly. He parked it and strode out of the garage towards the mansion.

*Remy!* shouted the Professor's mental image in the air, *Remy! Please come to my study. It's imperative, I need to see you right away.*

Remy looked around him, searching for any cause of what the trouble might be,"I'll be right dere, Professor."

Remy tromped to the mansion's entrance and quickly opened the door and ran past Ororo and Kurt. Only, they did not see or feel his presense, as he did not see or feel his. He quickly ascended the staircase, his feet pushing up and down quickly, like a piston. He opened the door to the Professor's study and saw the moonlight cast an eerie blue glow on the desk and chair that sat unturned before him.

"Professor?"

"You wish," was the only response as Gambit was hit hard from behind, forcing him to slip in unconsciousness.

His attacker smiled, as the blood trickled from his nose, "And the game begins...."

**********

Rogue stepped barefoot back into her room, gently rubbing her hair with a towel. She sat on her bed and saw the gift, still wrapped. She placed the towel down and grabbed it. She felt in her hands, light. She dug a nail into corner and pulled back, revealing it's contents. A pack of playing cards, complete with elaborate paintings of intricate, eye-catching designs of the backs of the cards. Rogue smirked a little, "Well, it's certainly from him...." she said as she placed it on her dresser and crawled under her mounds of sheets and blankets.

She fell fast asleep. Asleep like every other person in the house, all except one. One who had forced another to drift away. The blood stained the carpet in the study, but no one would ever be able to tell. Not if it was against the will. Not ever. That was a promise.
