An Interview with Jay Faerber
X-RISING: You've got a few issues of Gen X under your belt, are you feeling more confident with the characters and what you want to do with them? How you want them to interact?
FAERBER: Yeah, I think I'm getting more comfortable with them, and I hope it shows.
X-RISING: When you were first hired for the book, was there anyone character who stuck out to you? Someone you, for lack of a better word, "liked" best?
FAERBER: I took an instant liking to Monet, and also Synch.
X-RISING: Are there any off the wall ideas or crossovers with any other "teen" books, Marvel, DC or any other company that you would like to see?
FAERBER: I don't know how "off the wall" this is, but I think it'd be fun to see the GenXers meet up with Young Justice.
X-RISING: (Oh, off the interview for a sec here, but I'd love that! Robin and Jubilee once again! :) )
Back to the topic, are there any specific comic books that you read when you were growing up?
FAERBER: Yeah, I read tons of stuff. My favorites were probably NEW TEEN TITANS, GREEN ARROW, NEW WARRIORS, and SUICIDE SQUAD.
X-RISING: Would you like to write any books associated with any of those characters? Branch out and maybe work at other comic companies, also?
FAERBER: Well I've gotten to work on the Titans once already, but I'd love to go back for some more. And I'm lucky enough to be writing the NEW WARRIORS relaunch. I'd kill to bring back SUICIDE SQUAD, or do GREEN ARROW the right way. And yeah, I've got some stuff in the works at DC, and I'm thinking about doing a creator-owned book, too.
X-RISING: A creator-owned book? Characters you created yourself? Do you already have definite characters in your head and plots?
FAERBER: Yeah, characters created by myself and my artist friend, Dev Madan (of YOUNG HEROES IN LOVE). We've got a cast of characters, and a premise, but no definite plots yet.
X-RISING: Have you had the chance to meet Stan Lee yet?
FAERBER: Never had the pleasure, no.
X-RISING: Back to some Gen X stuff, Since you will be handling New Warriors soon, any ideas for your two books to crossover?
FAERBER: I've got an idea for it, but I don't know when/if we'll get to it.
X-RISING: Out of all the Gen X-ers, is there any specific one that you've gotten the most response from for your wiritng of him or her since you've taken over Gen X?
FAERBER: I heard a lot of GOOD things about my portrayal of Monet, and a lot BAD things about my portrayal of Skin.
X-RISING: Is there any character that is just really easy for you to write?
FAERBER: Monet and Jubilee come pretty easily.
X-RISING: How did it feel when you heard since you've come abroad, Gen X's sales have increased?
FAERBER: Pretty damn validating.
X-RISING: Currently, what are some of your favorite comics that are being published?
FAERBER: Right now, I'm digging THE AUTHORITY, NOVA, TITANS, and NIGHTWING. Those are at the top of my reading list, every month.
X-RISING: Thanks for your time, Jay! Best to you!
