"The
Edge of Forever" by Reg (The Fan)
Chapter One
"Sir?"
"Yes, Ensign
Colta?" the tall man in the green and red uniform, who, by
insignia, was a captain of a Shi'ar warship, replied. "Sir, I am picking up a
small vessel off the port bow, at mark 2.4." Colta replied.
"Speed and
origin?" replied the Captain. "Speed: drifting,
Origin: unknown........" the young Ensign answered. "Odd, can you tell what
kind of a ship it is?" the Captain asked. "Sir, it's a..Shi'ar
shuttle," Colta responded. A look of surprise was
painted on the Captain's face. "A Shi'ar shuttle?!? Out here?!
What ship is the shuttle from?" he asked, in a sort of
startled voice. "Sir, it's one of the
Retegwas..." the Ensign replied, trailing off. The Captain's
eyes widened. "Lifeforms?" he
asked, in a somewhat astonished tone of voice. "One sir, in the
suspended animation chamber," Ensign Colta said, looking at
the scan report. The Captain quickly shot
back, "Bring it aboard."
The Captain was in sick
bay, awaiting the patient, whom turned out to be Shi'ar, to
awaken. The ship's medic was with him. "What condition was he
in when he was brought on board?" the Captain questioned.
"Fairly good,
except for a laser shot to his left shoulder, which has been
treated," answered the short, bulky, medic. "I-"
Suddenly and quickly,
the patient startled up. The patient looked around, and looked at
the captain. "Where am I?" he
said in a raspy, tired voice. "You are aboard the
Shi'ar warship, Perfoma. My name is Captain Hotoa Kiul. Now, may I
ask, who are you?" Kiul replied, in a kind voice. "My name is Commander
Erenord Khabala, First officer on the Shi'ar warship, Retegwa,
sir," Khabala replied. "Commander, your ship
has been missing for several weeks now, care to tell us where you
have been?" asked Kiul.
"I'm sorry, sir,
but I will only speak to one person about that," Khabala
said, looking at Kiul. "And who might that
be?" Kiul responded.
"Queen Lilandra
Nermani, Majestrix of the Shi'ar."
*******************************************************
"Charles?"
Lilandra said. She was wandering the grounds of the forest
looking for her one true love, none other than Professor Charles
Francis Xavier, Headmaster of Xavier Institute for higher
learning.
"Charles? Are you
out here?" Lilandra called. It was night out and there was a
faint mist there earlier.
"Lilandra?"
a voice called off in the distance.
"Charles?"
Lilandra yelped as she ran towards the voice. Then she saw him,
and ran to him, she was just about to hug him when he threw his
hand out as to if to warn her off and he turned his head away.
"Charles is
something the matter?" Lilandra questioned. Suddenly Xavier
turned towards Lilandra and fired an electric bolt at Lilandra.
Lilandra screamed.
And then it was over.
Lilandra jerked up out of her bed in the Imperial palace,
breathing heavily. It was all a dream she thought. All a dream.
Or was it? Could she have somehow subconsciously contacted him
through the astral plane? While pondering this the door creaked
open.
It was one of Lilandra's
aides. "Majestrix? Are you all right?" she asked. "Y-yes, I'm fine, I
just had a bad dream, that's all, what is it Lolas?"
Lilandra asked. "Majestrix, one of the
Imperial warships has come back here unexpectedly," Lolas
said. "What ship and what
for?" Lilandra asked, puzzled. "The ship is the
Performa, they have a survivor from the Retegwa, whom wishes to
speak only to you. They attempted to tell us in advance, but
couldn't due to the interference of deep space
transmissions," Lolas said. The Retegwa?! Lilandra
thought. That ship went missing weeks ago! "Bring him here,
immediately," she said.
Lilandra was now out of
her sleeping gown and into a more comfortable, yet less formal,
dress. She walked into the conference room with the head of the
Imperial Guard, the warrior known as Gladiator, on her right. The
short man who was a officer on the Retegwa, sat at the end of the
table. The man got up and bowed as Lilandra walked in. "I understand that you
are Commander Erenord Khabala, First Officer on the Retegwa, are
you not?" Lilandra said. "I am, Majestrix"
Khabala replied. "Tell me, Commander
Khabala, what of the rest of the crew?" Lilandra queried. "They are all
dead," replied Khabala. Lilandra bowed her head and
closed her eyes. Looking up, she said, "I want to know
everything."
