This page is where I'll show you some stuff that I'm playing with in 3D Studio Max. Amongst other things...

Surface.dll is a modifier for 3DStudio Max. It is used to create patch models out of splines. All you do is build a mesh out of bezier splines, with all intersecting splines bisected by vertices where they cross. It's a great way of modelling, in my opinion it's better than nurbs, and it can be used to create fantastic organic models (which are my favourite type!)

The good thing about patches is that you can turn up the detail level, depending on the closeness of the camera to the model. Each patch is made up of 4 (or sometimes 3) bezier curves, which make up it's four sides. These curves are made up of straight lines which approximate the curve, and the more straight lines you have, the smoother the curve gets. This is called the step setting. If you look carefully at the outline of the arse cheek in the picture below, you can see that because the buttock is made of large surfaces, the steps are more obvious...

The new Max 3.1 has a lot of new features which make patch modelling a lot easier than it used to be. The crossinsert function in the vertex menu is particularly useful...

Here's a couple of work in progress renders...the model is actually more or less finished now (except the hair of course, it won't be that 'Lego' when I've finished). Sadly he has a far better body than me...

He needs to have bones applied to him now, so that he can be posed and animated. And some clothes might be in order too I suppose...
