Background...
In any picture, a background is not necessary (that's because a picture can be anything you want it to be!) but a background can add certain effects. A background gives the viewer some depth and a ground to stand on, it can also enhance a scene the artist is trying to create. As I've stated earlier, using big brushes to fill up the background with color is a good and fast way to do just that. The background is usually something you should start coloring (if you decide for a background) first since you can cover up background colors best when you do foreground coloring.

Petals, feathers, misc. objects...
You can add different effects to your art by putting significant objects into the picture, such as feathers drifting or petals falling. They tend to add some kind of magical, mysterious effect and it definitely makes the picture look much better and detailed. Of course, you don't have to choose from feathers and petals only, you can put anything you want. It seems that in a lot of manga, especially shoujo, artists like to use feathers and petals the most. When I add such objects to my paintings, I just use a small brush.

Paper...
What kind of paper do I use for this medium?
That was a question I had to solve when I first started out in more advanced stuff. To the left, you can tell that the picture is a little wavy. I had used watercolor on a thin sheet of paper (which I shouldn't have!). :( When using watercolors, try using it on a thicker sheet of paper (the cover should state that the paper is used for watercolor, etc.) Find what kind of paper goes best with the medium you are using so that you don't end up with rumpled pictures. You can doodle on printing paper and such, but try using nicer (and maybe thicker) paper for the works of art. :)
