Jane left her room after hearing the footsteps on the roof outside her window. She walked down the stairs that led to the second floor of her house. She listened intently to the echo of her footsteps in the empty house. They sounded the same as they did years ago when the house was a large wonder for a young child. She had lived in the house her whole life as did her brother and her sisters.
It was New Year's Eve and she was trying to waste some time until Marg, her friend, would come pick her up to go to a party. It was almost 8 o'clock and she still had an hour to go. She opened the fridge in her kitchen and reached for a Pepsi but decided to try some of her sister's homemade sugarless, lemonless (tasteless) iced tea, which her and her mother referred to as "sludge". She got a green mug out of the cabinet that read "Stockten Mom" in bold white letters, and poured herself about a half a cup of the flavorless brew. She took one sip and cringed as she uttered a low "Uggh.". It tasted like bitter water. How could Stacy (her sister) drink this poison, she thought to herself.
Poison it was, it burned on the way down and left a slight ache in her stomach that would last the rest of the night. Yet, she drank the rest of the cup. "Why?", you might ask, well she did this for a few reasons: 1) She wasn't thinking. 2) She was nervous. and 3) After a while she didn't mind the taste of it.
Jane started thinking about her brother. Jeremy had gone out to eat at a diner with a friend. He should be back by now, she thought as she look at the clock for the umpteenth time. However she pushed her concern away. He's 18 years old and out with his friends. It's New Year's Eve he should be having fun. I'm so paranoid. It's only a party. A party that just doesn't seem to want to happen. Time is just moving so slowly and my mind is racing. She managed to calm herself and as she noticed the phone was ringing. She had no idea how long it had been ringing but it mustn't have been long or the answering machine would have clicked on. She got up and picked up the phone just before the machine did.
"Hello?" she said shakily as if she was scared of what information caller might hold. But just before the person could answer the electricity went out.
"Hello? Helloo! Shit! " Well she had no idea how to work the fuse box. Hopefully the electricity was out all over the house so that it was a power outage. She checked and found out to her surprise that the whole house was out except her brother's room. She found this odd but she knew she had no way of fixing the rest of the house. It would probably be coming back on in the rest of the house in just a little bit. she went by the front door and turned the flashlight towards her watch so she could read it; it was as black as pitch in the rest of her house.
She decided to look for the dogs. She walked into her parents room easily now that her eyes were adjusted to the dark. She heard a strange noise but thought nothing of it thinking it w the dogs 'dreaming'. But then she noticed the noise wasn't coming from the house. It sounded like someone saying her name. She walked over to the window and leaned out to see. She didn't have her glasses on anymore so she had to squint to see his face clearly. It was Seth. Didn't he drive Jeremy to the diner? she thought to herself.
She leaned out the window further and called him "Seth! Seth! .Where's Jeremy?!?" he made no move nor did he make a sound; he just stared at her blankly. "Seth!! Seth!! Where's Jeremy ?!?" she yelled again but he still did not answer her. Suddenly a feverish smile crawled across his lips, he waved and walked into the darkness of the street.
She called back out after him , but it was no use, he was gone. This event struck her as odd. She could have sworn Seth was the one who had driven Jeremy to the diner. Maybe her eyes were playing tricks on her. She left stumbling towards the front door; Marg should be here soon. She looked out the front door and noticed a car that looked just like Seth's- it had to be. It's color was a little bit paler and it seemed to glide up the road with out even a hum, unlike normal how it clunked and backfired towards the house and then gave out a rattle noise when it parked- it sounded brand new. Just as it pulled up to the house she looked to see who was inside, she couldn't see anyone. The windows were tinted and mirror like- unlike any she had ever seen.
The street was silent as were the houses on it and the only things recognizable on it was the car. It was as if the street were alien . It was so silent, too silent. Not one's house made a sound, it was as if time itself had stopped and the only thing that had remained was here and the car.
She wanted to leave the house but couldn't bring herself to doing so. Just as she got the nerve to run to the car the car's window opened as it glided away. She stood in awe at what she saw; Jeremy and Seth were in the car. She ran outside as fast as possible only to see it vanish up and over the hill.
She was just about to get out of the street and turned to her house. The lights were on again. She looked down the street; all of the houses' lights were on. Just as she was about to step onto the curb she noticed a police car driving towards her. She quickly stepped onto the curb as it pulled up to her feet.
The speech the officer gave her was all a blur. All she heard was silence and his mouth moving was all she saw. She didn't need to hear what he had to say, she already knew why he was there. The cop tried to get her into the car but she pulled away and ran across the street. But as she did the policeman yelled at her but the squeal of tires was all she heard. Marg jumped out of the truck and was silent, for she knew what had happened. The officer went to her body and said silently to himself,
