Bill Hardy's office was not grandiose, at least not according to the standards of America's heros. If though his face had been on the cover of Time, Hardy did not feel like the great American hero. But the American public played it hero for his work in stopping the "Machette Killer" by placing his own life in danger. Mail continued to pour into his office at FBI headquarters. Hardy was even getting movie offers and in his head wondered who would play him.
He sat at his desk looking at a stack of fan mail. Deep in his mind he still had nightmares of that awful day, but everything now was going so great. Tonight over dinner he planned to ask Suzy to marry him. Promotion was also in the works. Yet he had a nagging feeling that something was about to go terribly wrong.
A light rap on the door interrupted his thoughts. Bill looked at the door and said, "come", he just loved to fantasize that he was Captain Piccard on the Starship Enterprize.
Anne Robertson, his secretary, entered his office carrying a huge pile of mail. Anne had been with Hardy for over five years. She was getting married next month and Suzy and Bill were invited to her wedding.
She place the stack of mail onto Bill's desk. "Man, I can't believe that we have actually got to respond to all of these letters!"
I am sure the pile will dwindle. You know the public will get tired of me. I just would love to forget the whole affair. I feel it is my fault that the young girl...."
"She pushed and wanted to take the chance. The young girl knew exactly what she was doing. Unfortunately she was no match for the killer. That's not your fault."
Amos, the next door agent walked in, "More fan mail, I see,"
he smiled.
"I tried to arrange the stacks, the faxes and the packages," Anne started to open one of the package, a big yellow envelope.
She ripped open the string, pulled back the flap and put in her hand.
All of a sudden she yelled a shriek. She pulled out her hand which had a few light cuts on two of her fingers and was bleeding slightly.
"I don't know what happened," Anne said as Bill handed her some tissues from a box on his desk. "There is something in the package top that cut me."
Amos placed the package on the desk. He took out a pocketknife and slit open the package so he could remove the whole front.
"Well, I'll be, " he muttered. "Someone has set up a little booby trap. When Anne pulled the string it open the parafin on those bubbles in the package. Somebody injected what looks like blood into those bubbles. Hmm, It looks like he took some plastic pieces that were sharp and pasted them to the top of the package. Anne cuts her hand and the blood from the bubbles enters her blood stream."
"That makes no sence, why would anyone do that to me?" Anne queried.
"Right now I do not know but you are going to the hospital as a precaution, " Bill dialed 911.
While Bill made the call Amos helped Anne sit down. He did not say what was on his mind because he did not want to scare her. He prayed it was a hoax, not poison as he assumed but he was extremely worried, yet Anne although a little white and a somewhat frightened did not show any evidence of any problems. Other people started to enter Hardy's office but he had security keep everyone at bay. Finally the ambulance arrived and took Anne to emergency.
Both Bill and Amos conveyed to Anne that they would be there as soon as possible. As soon as the room was vacated Bill closed the door. He was extremely agitated.
"Whoever sent this package has my attention. I want this person. What are we looking at" he said practically clenching his teeth.
Amos pulled the contents out with a pair of twizzers. In the package was only two things. A 45 speed record, Sam Cook's "Dock of the Bay" and a little note, "the games a foot".
"I only hope Anne is allright, but whoever sent this went to a great deal of trouble. We have got to figure these clues out for I believe there is a dangerous person out there who is going to strike soon. Amos alert the same team we just used on the Machette case. Let's meet in one hour and put our brains to work to stop whatever this record nut has in mind."
