August 31st, 1999
Quilt applications have begun to trickle in. You can check the web site for the complete list of received applications. I am not exagerating in the slightest when I say that every single quilt is absolutely stunning!!! I am so amazed by the creativity of these quilts. I am going to attempt to gain access to a color scanner so that we can post pictures of the winning and alternate quilts on the site. If all of the expected appplications arrive, then the total pool of quilts will be 30. I still would very much like to have a higher number to choose from than that, but I am definitely pleased that we have more than 25 to begin with.

I have been asked a question with regards to insuring the quilts/quilt exhibit. To be perfectly honest, I really don't know about those details at this time. Right now I am focusing on putting the exhibit together and getting a sponsor and applying to be a part of the Festival. IF we are selected for the Festival, then I will focus on all the "little" details such as when the quilts need to be in Houston, where they should be sent to, how they will be returned to their owners, and who will foot the postage bill for returning them - each individual quilt owner or the Festival. (If there is anyone on the list who has submitted a quilt to a national show by mail, please e-mail me. I have some questions about how that works, the answers to which may shed some light on the above questions.) Thanks for the support. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Our deadline is fast approaching. With only a month to go, I have only received 3 applications so far and only 2 of those contained quilt photos. I would like to know how many of you still intend to submit your applications between now and September 15th. It seems every week there are at least a couple of Y2Kshow OneList members who remove themselves from this list. This makes me wonder if the interest and support for this exhibit is waning. There are currently only 35 people on this list besides myself.

If you plan to submit an application before the deadline, please e-mail me and let me know. Remember, only your quilt top needs to be completed and a photo taken of it before the deadline. You have until August 15th, 2000 to have the quilt itself completed.

Thanks for the support. I will update everyone in a few days and let you know how many people contact me saying they are still planning to submit applications.

Here is some information about the 2000 Festival. The theme is "Imagination". We will be using this info to our advantage when writing up our proposal to the folks who organize the festival. We plan to empasize just how creative the quilters were to be able to start with essentially the same thing (2000 charms) and come up with entirely different, creative quilts. It takes a lot of creativity and imagination to do that.

The 2000 Festival will also feature the Millennium Quilt Contest for artsy, representational quilts depicting historical events, famous people, famous events, etc. (I will provide a link to the rules for this contest when they become available on their web site.) The name they selected for this contest, however, will force us to change the name of our exhibit if we wish to have a chance at having our exhibit selected. We need to stick with the term "Y2K Quilts" to describe our quilts. Therefore, we are announcing a contest to come up with a new name for our exhibit. The winning entry will receive a Fat Quarter. The contest deadline is September 15th, 1999, the same deadline as for the quilt applications. E-mail your suggestions to: [email protected]

We've just received our very first application by mail. Thanks so much. We look forward to receiving many more in the months to come. Check back for a new area which will list the names of all applicants and the date their application arrived. This will allow you to make sure your application was received without having to e-mail us about it. Allow a couple of weeks from the date you sent your application before you see your name on the list.

If you have a funny Y2K quilt-related poem or story, please e-mail us with it. We'd like to liven this web site up a bit by adding a bit of humor. Check out our "Signs Your a Y2K Swapping Maniac" in our newly added "Funny Bone" section. We are working on having t-shirts printed with the "Signs" on the back plus a Y2K Swapping Maniac logo on the front. More details to come...

Please stop by our "Submit Your Quilt Area". It now features a Frequently Asked Questions section, which may provide you with some needed information. If you have a question which isn't covered please e-mail it to us, and we'll add it to the FAQ list.
Thanks to everyone who helped us out by sharing your opinions regarding our recent poll. It has really helped us out in writing the guidelines.

The voting has completely died down, and we're left with a clear answer to one question and a mixed answer on the other. It is clear that we should stick to a 2000 piece design concept for these quilts, but the vote was split over whether to count the sigs toward that 2000 number or not. One quilter supplied a phrase, which I think will settle the matter to most everyone's satisfaction. "The main design of the quilt should be based on 2000 pieces." This covers the quilts which count the sigs, as well as those which don't.
Please stop by the "Submit Your Quilt" area to check out the submission guidelines, and also check out the "Application" area. Both are complete, and we are now ready to begin receiving your applications and photos. If you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail us.
Thanks.

Please check out our new area, "The Store". There you will find both a link to and a search box for Amazon.com. Any purchases you make at Amazon.com using our link or search box will earn a 5-15% commission to help with Exhibit expenses. These include postage to return the quilts to their owners after the Festival and the cost of the conference room and supplies for our big get- together in Houston. If you need to buy a book, CD, movie, tape, or DVD, please consider placing your order from our Store. Thanks.

We are quickly working on guidelines for the quilts to be considered for this exhibit. Cyndi and I realize that many quilters are ready to begin work on their quilts but are hesitant to do so until they know what we will be looking for. A preliminary list of guidelines has been drawn up and will be posted to this web site either today (the 28th) or tomorrow (the 29th). Thanks for the patience.

My conversation today with Bob Shore was very encouraging. Mr. Shore is in charge of Special Exhibits at Quilts, INC., which puts on the annual International Quilt Festival in Houston each year. He says they would be interested in an exhibit of Millennium quilts, but he can't commit to the exhibit as of yet. A formal, written proposal must be submitted to Quilts, Inc. by March 1st, 2000. The proposals will be reviewed and exhibits selected after that time. He said that this sort of exhibit would be very much in line with what they have planned for the 2000 Festival.

In attempting to organize this show Cyndi and I have become aware of just how expensive it is to exhibit quilts. The cost just for hanging the quilts can be quite large. In talking to Mr. Shore, I have been made aware that due to space limitations, our exhibit can be no larger than 25 quilts. This many quilts will take up 100 linear feet of space in the exhibit hall. Cyndi and I will therefore need to select 25 quilts to represent the vast number of Y2K quilters who have participated in these swaps. These quilts must be visually interesting and must be as diverse as possible in design.

Very soon we will begin soliciting photographs of finished Y2K quilts and quilt tops from those quilters who are interested in having their quilt be a part of this exhibit. The deadline for application and sending your photograph will be October 1st, 1999. Once the deadline has passed, Cyndi and I will select the 25 quilts for the exhibit and the winners will be announced. The photos of the 25 selected quilts will be used as part of our official proposal to companies who might be willing to sponsor our exhibit and pay the $2,000 sponsorship fee which IQF requires. Once a sponsor has been found, that information, the photos and our proposal will be submitted to IQF for approval.

Specific details regarding getting the quilts to the show and sending them back to the quilters hasn't been ironed out yet, but there is plenty of time for that. We will be posting that information as it is worked out.
