LIGHTENING RIDGE
© Elizabeth Lance

Satellites and shooting stars, we saw as clear as day;
And on our right the Southern Cross, above, the Milky Way.
Straight ahead stark silhouettes of gumtrees all around
The campfire embers died to white. We couldn't hear a sound.

The clouds on the horizon had crept like silent thieves
And gusts of wind now stirred up little eddies of dry leaves.
Lightening arced across the sky just like a ghostly bridge
Nature's force - the Ironstone Legend - known as Lightning Ridge.
