"The Last Day" Copyright TB98 TB99 Story written and told by Trexter Ziam Fritzen yelled in his sleep, "The last day! The last day!" His wife rolled over and shook him to wake him. "You had that nightmare again Fritzey, honey. Wake up!" Fritzen yelled again, "The last day!" then he sat straight up in bed, wide-eyed and terrified looking. "You MUST have something done about those nightmares." Trina griped. I am sick and tired of waking to hear you yelling, "The last day! The last day!" His eyes began to glow red then redder and redder still until no pupils could be seen. Tears of blood ran down his cheeks; then his eyes BURST into flames. Slowly the twin fires dwindled as Fritzen's corpse fell lifelessly back to the bed. The sight of her husband with black-charred, empty eye sockets was the last straw for Trina. She was was institutionalized for twelve years following her sudden and shocking widowhood. Shock therepy completely erased her tragic memory so she could attain a somewhat normal life again one day. She made a lot of new friends in the hospital, most of whom were there for her when she was finally released. Having lost her home and all her worldly possessions, she went to live in an "independent living community" which many of her new friends had settled into. Now Monika was a gloomey sort of lady; dark, dreary and often morose or thoroughly depressed. Monika had a LOT of bad habits, the worst of which was picking her nose then chewing her nails which repulsed most "normal" people. Trina seemed to be able to overlook irritating flaws in people and befriended her anyway. Besides, Monika had gone to the same High School as Trina twenty years earlier and remembered more about Trina, than Trina remembered of herself. In late October a new resident came to live at the Hollow Brook Independent Living Community. Thomatas had been convicted of murdering his own wife and son...was found temporarily insane and received a "light" sentence with rehabilitation. They never found the wife's body; but, the corpse of the newborn boy and the evidence surrounding the grizzley crime scene was more than adequate to convict. The hospital doctors considered him a peaceful gentleman and he was quite the charmer. Convieniently, he never had any memory of the incident. He too had known Trina in High School; though, had not seen her since then. He met her in the reception area as he was checking-in. Thomatus and Trina exchanged greetings and a few friendly words for awhile, then each went on their way. Three days after his arrival he ran into Trina and Monika on the stairwell. "Monika! Monika!" He exclaimed. "My God! They told me you were dead!" Monika wisked Thomatus away to her room; leaving Trina stranded alone, bewildered and confused on the stairwell. "Are you okay Trina?" asked one old counselor. "You seem lost." "Nah, I'll be alright." she replied absent-mindedly as if lost in thought on some other planet. Trina, intrigued by the sudden revelation went to Monika's room and put her ear to the hollow door. "Our son, is he still alive as well?" she heard Thomatus ask. "Of course not you silly old fool." Monika snidely replied. "He's not?" A moment of silence briefly passed then he stated, "I'm confused" Monika replied, "Remember in High School? You were my second choice. I had to settle for you as I could not have my true love." "I never wanted children with you...I wanted Fritzen to father my children." Shocked at hearing her husband's name, memories began to flood back to Trina. She wanted to burst open the door so badly she shivered all over in anger and confusion; but, managed to control herself just barely. "I feel it's safe to tell you the story now because nobody would believe you anyway." Monika stated coldly. "Remember that bimbo Trina who married him? You met her in the hall." Thomatus nodded quietly; he always knew he was second fiddle and seemed to accept it. Trina's ears were burning now and she was HOT! Monika continued, "I found a homeless, old-time witch down by the river and asked her for a spell to have Fritzen for myself." "The old hag insisted I had to pay and she readily agreed to take my husband; you, for a single night in payment for the spell." "It seems she had been in love with you all these years as I had been with Fritzen." "She took my body for one night, the night our son was conceived." "Gee whiz!" Thomatus mumbled, "That was the best night we ever had." Monika continued unaffected, "She gave me the spell but I did not have all the ingredients, so I substituted here and there." Trina's memories flooding back had came to a sudden halt. "The last day! The last day!" she yelled as she burst into the room. Monika's eyes began to glow red then redder and redder still until no pupils could be seen. Tears of blood ran down her cheeks; then her eyes BURST into flames. Monika fell lifelessly to the floor with a THUD! Trina stepped over the warm corpse and took Thomatus hand and said, "It is true my one and only love. Let's go home." Next time you peer into the burning eyes of a Jack O' Lantern...remember...this could be YOUR Last Day!
