92 (JCH -- 1996)
Engine 92 always leads the way
through the woods behind the Native American burial ground
pulling, coal, cotton, ammonia nitrate and caustic soda
to the concrete and steel factories along the line
crossing the paths of cursing motorists
and innocent, wide-eyed kids in yellow boxes
riding rails that were set in place a hundred years ago
thundering through farmland and mobile home parks
and under busy stretches of interstate
before finally returning to it’s home--
a weathered, wooden depot
behind an abandoned textile mill
in the heart of a small town.
