Runaway Horses (JCH -- 1990)
Horses in the barn
         so elegant on the track
Not unlike a beautiful woman,
the candlelight glowing on her ethereal skin;
         a smile crosses her face.

But the horses in the barn
         were the first to suspect.
The rock’n’roller took his long hair
and electric guitar and fled the scene.
What must the old farmer have thought
to find his daughter stripped and bound in the barn?

The horses in the barn knew everything.
She was accomplished in the art of deception
And her friends had only descriptive names
And each their own little job to do
All of which worked well into her master plan

Horses in the barn
         so elegant on the track
Not unlike a beautiful woman,
the candlelight glowing on her ethereal skin--
What are the thoughts behind the smile?
