Monica’s Reluctance (JCH -- 9/96)
Monica wants a baby of her own
But she has no mate
“I’d be such a good mother”
“I’d take the best of my mom
And the best of grandmother
And be the best mother I could”
She tells her friends she can hear the clock ticking
Her child would be a beautiful girl, she thinks
And she’d name her Brittany Hope
Because Hope is such a strong emotion
She pictures holding her baby in her arms
Still in the hospital
The pain wouldn’t be so strong then
And the first day of kindergarten
And sitting on Santa’s lap
And baking cookies together
And the lemonade stand in the front yard
And her first trip to the beach
When she could fully understand the beauty
Of a full moon’s reflection on a mirrored sea
And the spectre of a million stars
In a cloudless sky
Monica smiles a smile only she understands
And hopes that her child
Will understand, too
