__________

I wanted to pass along some exciting news about A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Meisha Merlin Press of Atlanta, Georgia has obtained the rights from Bantam
to do a new edition of the novels -- a deluxe limited edition in slipcase,
signed, numbered, and illustrated. Each volume will have a wrap around cover
and three interior color plates, and black and white artwork for each chapter.

I am thrilled to be able to say that the art for the new Meisha Merlin
editions will be done by Jeffrey Jones. I fell in love with Jeff Jones's
painting when I first saw his cover for Roger Zelazny's THE DOORS OF HIS
FACE, THE LAMPS OF HIS MOUTH thirty years ago, and he's gotten even better
over the decades. It's quite a thrill for me to have him illustrating my
work. Jeff is already at work on the paintings for A GAME OF THRONES.

Meisha Merlin will be issuing the books in two states: a gorgeous numbered
edition limited to 500 copies per volume, and a presentation edition
limited to 52 lettered copies that promises to be even more splendid. Jeff
Jones and I will be autographing both states.

Stephen Pagel of Meisha Merlin tells me it will be possible for readers to
subscribe to the entire run in advance so as to guarantee themselves the same
number or letter on each of the six volumes, and thus assemble a matching set.

Meisha Merlin will soon be issuing an "official" announcement about their
edition of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, which will include details of publication
dates, prices, and how to order....

I checked it out yesterday after seeing Sulthon referring to that very mail on his site.

Jones' cover art was certainly cool...

I'm still trying to consider if the cover represents some particular scene, as Jones sees it. When I first saw it, I thought, perhaps, it was his depiction of the siege of Pyke when the walls were broken down. The two knights might well be Robert and Ned.

But ... looking at the banner, I'm not sure what it is. There's a red thing that might be a three-headed dragon, and there's definently some gold on it, but it seems to be primarily blue . . .

Now I think that Jones is just trying to be evocative (which, admittedly, is what he excels at -- he's got tons of art on his web page, and he's really good at creating a sense of msytery, of grand sweeping movements.) It works well, anyhow. I've got it as my computer's wallpaper now.

When I looked closely at that cover, I felt that I saw, not two knights, but a person on horseback, accompanied by a direwolf.

Well, that puts me out of business.
I was pondering buying one of those, but $250 is _way_ over my budget limits... (should have figured they'd be that expensive; IIRC, Jones would add approximately three drawings for every chapter)

Hmm...there is something I don't understand.

I thought something was wrong with my statement above, so I checked with the MM site...

True enough, there is says that Jones will make three interior full color plates, and _one_ b&w drawing for every chapter (not three, as I thought).
But it also says that there will be no less than 72 b&w drawings in aGoT, and IIRC, there's nowhere near 72 chapters in aGoT, so...WTF?

The cover could be a view of Aegon's High hill from the northern shore of Blackwater Bay, or maybe Dragonstone.

Well, AGoT has exactly 72 chapters (without Prologue).

Huh...well, I guess that settles it then.

Kinda strange...I would never have guessed there were all of 72 chapters in that book...

I sent an e-mail to Jeffrey Jones, complimenting his artwork and asking about the source. This is what he sent in response.

Ben,

Thanks. It is not a particular scene but more represents the entire feel of
the book...I hope. I find that the danger in depicting specific scenes is
either it steals the imagination of the reader or he violently disagrees
with my rendition. I mean to add to the book, not detract.

Jeffrey
ps. on my website at http://www.ulster.net/~jonesart/gallery48.html is
the character Catelyn for the book and at
http://www.ulster.net/~jonesart/knight1.html is a work in progress for
somewhere in the latter part of the book.

Is that $250 for all six books, or one? ($250 for six isnt that bad- Regular books are $25 each or so, although you can buy them for like $10/$15 with discounts- without discounts, that costs $150 for all the books plus these will be hardback, with pics, limited editions, autographs. )

But $250 for one book...forget it!

$250 for _A Game of Thrones_. Half now, half before they go to print, plus shipping & handling.

$350 if you go for the even more limited lettered editions.

I can understand the cost. This is extremely high quality stuff, and Jeffrey Jones is well-known in fantasy art circles -- doesn't do much mainstream stuff anymore, I think. You get 6 new covers, something like over 400 B&W illustrations, etc.

But .. yeah, it's a lot. I'm sure there's a market for it, but it's going to take them awhile before they start getting some solid sales in.

Well, should I bet, it's $250 for _one_ book. If they're to make money on this, I think they have to set the price that high.

After all, if we say that all six was $250 (or three hundred, in order to simplify the calculations), that would mean 50 dollars times 500 volumes = 25 grand.

Considering how Jones is making full color dust jacket, three full color interior plates, and no less than _seventy_ interior b&w pictures, I think he would take a very big chunk of that sum all by himself, if he is a known artist (and it seems that he is). I don't recall what Michael Whelan (or whatever his name was) takes, but it was a pretty hefty sum, for the covers only.

Well, I'm halfway talking out of my ass here, so I could be wrong, but...

Someone should mail Meisha Merlin and ask for examples of the interior plate and B&W art. ;) I really don't think I can afford these myself, but if they're really good . . . a bit more representational than impressionistic .... it might be that nudge that'll get me to buy them.

I think Sulthon ponders doing just that (ask for examples, that is)...
