GRRM's noted to me that a larger scan of the U.S. cover can be found at:

It's rather darker, too -- the Bantam scan is more correct, in that regards, because the foil is more of that torquoise hue that it shows.

Thanks, Ran. The US cover looks great--SOOO much better than the cheesy UK cover. It's like comparing an art gallery to a pawn shop. :)

One of the two fighting men on the cover is probably Mr. Payne, King's headsman and sword stealer wielding Ice. Don't know who hes fighting though. What do you guys think?

That's why the UK edition get's out earlier than the US one...it's an excuse for the shitty cover. :P

Heh.

I'm suspecting that the editors get a fat bonus if they get it out on time, because they really cut corners. I suspect the case will be the same as with _CoK_ -- no new map, no new map updates, and sundry minor errors which will all be repaired in the U.S. edition. But who knows. :)

US Cover, IMO, is more stylish then the UK version. But you cant judge a book by it's cover, right? - What I'm taking away from the US cover so far is this: I think the man with the bow is Geoff. The woman behind him could be his mother or his fiance/wife. If that is Geoff, then the man above him could be a Kingsguard member, maybe Jaime? The reason I suspect these characters is because of the crimson like Lannister colors. But why the ship?

The other theory: Stannis is standing on the small hill, waiting for Davos (in the water) to come up with some news. The woman could be Melasandra (sp), but who is the guy with the bow?

The red-haired man with the bow seems important, that sword at his side looks important.

There's discussion elsewhere. The colors are the Tully colors -- red and blue. The ship is Lord Hoster's funeral boat, and you can see him lying atop of it if you look closely. The flame-haired man with the bow and flaming arrow is Edmure, and the woman behind him is Catelyn. Behind the both of them is Brynden Tully, the Blackfish, looking as his brother's boat is being lowered into the river.

It's a misty morning, I guess, and one can see trees across the water through that mist.

Aaron, the colors on the boat and the look of those standing closest to the viewer are of House Tully. It's my bet that this is one of the funerals that GRRM mentioned, namely Lord Hoster Tully's funeral. His body is on the boat. The figure with the sword and bow (there is a flaming arrow notched on that bow BTW) is Edmure. Next to him is Catelyn and further back is Ser Brynden, the blackfish.

Okay, I can see that now. I always pictured Cat older then that, and with red (not auburn) hair.

On the topic of covers, but not SoS. I saw on the SSM that Stephen Youll did a cover of GoT that was taken off the US Hardback edition and later used on the Swedish hardback. Is there a scan of that around anywhere?

That's Brynden (not in armor, which isn't appropriate -- but long hair, just as in in the _ASoS_ cover), and a much more auburn-haired Catelyn. And way up on the top of that mountain or some of the towers of the Eyrie.

Hey Ran, love the Swedish cover. Best of the lot. What does that "Sagen om is och eld" mean? An old sage of elves? Carl Sagen is an old Zen Buddhist?....Ok, sorry j/k....And as for "I Vargans Tid"...ummm "A Game of Thrones?" the plural (I assume) "the" is interesting with game being singular though throne is plural...ok, I will stop.

Pah, that UK cover...oh dear. 100% agree Emily. Should I find myself in the UK when it comes out, I shall hide the cover yet again (the way I hid the last one)

Heres my interpretation: Tyrion is lower right, Margery is lower left. The thing is, I think the "frame" is a helmet, viewed from the front, with a horrid emptiness in it. But they we sort of look beyond the emptiness and see two figures fighting. I think they are Jon and Mance Rayder, King of the Wildings.

I can't see the US cover well enough to comment, even at the site where it is large. My monitor must not be as good as some of yours.

For some reason, it's actually: "In the Time of the Wolf," more or less. Close to Martin's projected sixth book title, before he even came up with it. ;)

Actually thats interesting how "A Game of Thrones" is not always used as the title. I suppose it does not translate well. I know the German is Die Herran Von Winterfell, and thats probably spelled all wrong, just like I missed Sagan.

Anyone know of a "babelfish" type thing that does languages other than English, French, Spanish and German? I love knowing what things mean.

That is rather excellent that the Swedish traslater named it after Wolves. Quite a grasp of the overall theme.

I'm going to actually start a thread in A Song of Ice and Fire, a thing I rarely do, asking what GRRM's ASoIAF books are called in other places. It would probably be better than continuing it on the cover art thread.
