HIBISCUS REFUGE

Hybridizers and Hybridizing

AUSTRALIAN HYBRIDIZERS

In the twenty years or so Thelma and I have been associated with nursery activities, and in particular with hibiscus for the last twelve, we have met many of the following hybridizers and realize it takes a special person to have the perseverance required.  A sudden storm or just a windy day can strip hundreds of the seed pods from bushes.  Bugs just love them.

It takes an early riser to even get the pollen to work in our hot weather, but that's another story!!

Here are some of those hybridizers and the plants they developed.  Many haven't stood the test of time with growers although I'm sure you'll have heard of quite a few.  We have a kind of hibiscus "archive" at our place where we have over 1000 cultivars growing, many of which should probably have been culled long ago.
