Reiki
Reiki- What is it? History
The original name for Reiki is Usui Shiki Ryoho. Reiki is a healing art discovered (re-discovered?) by Mikao Usui in the very early 1900?s. Mikao Usui was a Japanese monk who was seeking an alternative energy healing power which didn?t drain the healer. There are many forms of healing, simular to Reiki, used in many places around the world. The basic way these were used was the healer would take energy form him/herself and pass it to the patient. The healer, though, as this was their own bodily energy, would be drained after, and it would take a long time for the energy to be restored.
Reiki, however, is slightly different. It still used the same type of energy, or so I believe, but the healing energy comes from a greater source. Some say its from the universe, some from nature, some from god, depending on the personal belief. But the healer doesn?t get drained. The healer isn?t really giving any or their own energy, rather is also getting more, as the energy fills the person first, then
?overflows? to the person receiving the Reiki. Because of this, you could say that they are more of a ?channel? for the energy to flow through. Everyone has this ability, but in an attunement, what a Reiki master gives you if you want to become a Reiki channel, brings you more in line with this energy, and nature. Sort of like turning a fuzzy radio onto a finer tuning, and getting a more clear sound.

During a Reiki session, a person who is a Reiki channel would lie you down on a massage table, on a bed or in some other comfortable position. They simply put their hands on you in the place that is effected and needs healing, or in the basic positions on the stomach, head and back. It is much like a massage, but with the hands still, and you may experience a warmness or tingling sensation form the person?s hands. What the person does depends on the person, they may talk very casually, and laugh in a normal conversation. They may also close their eyes, what they are most likely doing then is trying to ?listen? to their hands. Sometimes there are places on the body that are warmer than other. This may mean that certain places may be related to something not noticed by the receiver, like the reason for a cold, or notice something the person hadn?t told them, eg a heart condition. Though it?s not necessary in the Reiki, it would work either way, it helps if the Reiki practitioner knows what exactly might be wrong in the receivers body, so it can be focussed on. The Reiki practitioner may sometimes take their hand off, and ?wave? it around the body. These are intentional symbols, which is a part of Reiki two. Also, depending on the person, you can sometimes feel a ?link? with the person, and occasionally when the Reiki practitioner ?listens? to their hands, they can pick up ?visions? or pictures. These may be irrelevant, or may have some meaning to the receiver. I know of a story where a Reiki was being given to a person, and they were Reiking the bladder and the Reiki practitioner saw an old fashioned toilet, with a pipe blocked. Of course, he had no idea what this meant, but he told the person he was Reiking about it, and she understood it. Apparently she was a nurse with bladder problems, and she didn?t know what was wrong with her urinary system. She put his ?vision? of the old fashioned toilet and her knowledge of the urinary system together, and she thought that a particular something is blocked? she got it checked out, and it was right.
So different people may carry out the Reiki in different ways, but every time it would work basically the same with the energy being channelled from them to you.

Reiki doesn?t interfere with any religious beliefs!!! It was discovered by a Japanese monk, was passed to many other people, not necessarily Japanese, and has no mention of any gods, spirits, you can believe what YOU want to believe, and keep your religion in it as well. There is absolutely no interference, so you need not worry.

When Reiki is done on a person, the person will most likely go into a state of alpha, which is a deep relaxation, but not quite asleep. Of course, of the person falls asleep, his is also fine, the Reiki will still work.

Reiki one is the basic form of Reiki, there is also Reiki two, which includes learning three of the four symbols. these symbols are used for drawing energy to a specific place and absent healings.
Absent healings can be done with just a photo, or, if the person is well known to the healer, no photo is necessary.
The fourth symbol is given to you when learning Reiki 3, where you get the title ?master?. When you?ve completed Reiki 3, you can then initiate others.
There is no difference in the energy coming from someone?s hands if they are a master, or just know Reiki one, the basics are the same. The only difference is that the master can do more with what they?ve got than the Reiki 1 channeler.
Miako Usui was a Japanese monk living in a monastery. He was taught the healing arts, living in a monastery. Miako Usui realised that with the healing arts he was learning, the healer would get easily drained, as the energy would come from them. He went in search of a healing power that didn?t drain the healer. He came across many healing arts, but none so far that didn?t drain oneself of energy.
Usui was sure such a thing must exist, where the healer didn?t become drained, and so he decided to go up onto a mountain and fast, and meditate for a great many days.
Just as Usui was sure he was to die, for he had been a long time without food, he found enlightenment, and discovered Reiki.
He instantly got revived, and though he was ageing in years, he virtually skipped down the mountain, as if he were in his early twenties, full of youth again.
On his way down he happened to stub his toe, and, as being instinct, he bent down and grasped it. Almost immediately the bleeding stopped, and the swelling subsided and went after a few minutes of Reiki. He then found he could heal with his hands, and heal himself, as well as others, which so far could only have happened in having food, and meditation.
All this was in early 1900?s, about 1909. Usui practiced Reiki for many years, and helped many hundreds of people with diseases, hurts, fatal wounds etc.
Then Usui realised that he would die some day, and he must find a way to pass this great gift on to others, so he meditated again.
He found the answer, and taught all he knew, and ?initiated? or attuned a man named Chujiro Hayashi, as well as some other people from the eastern culture. Since then the idea of Reiki has flourished, and has been taught to many, and many have been attuned.
There are variations of Reiki, some use stones, some have other hand positions? this method of Reiki I know of is called the Usui method, it is the most original form, and has remained as unchanged and preserved since Miako Usui discovered it as possible.
'Reiki roots'
The roots of Reiki all trace back to Miako Usui, but whom he taught, and who his disciples taught remains a mystery to me, and to many others. As far as I know, Miako Usui taught Chujiro Hayashi, a close friend of Miako Usui the secrets of Reiki. Chujiro Hayashi became rather renown for his healing capabilities, and Hawayo Takata heard of him, and came a long way to see him. She was amazed at Reiki, and wanted to learn it. Chujiro Hayashi was a bit hesitant, but taught her at her sincerity. the World War proved a problem, then, for Hawayo Takata and Chujiro Hayashi were in a vulnerable place. Hawayo Takata fled to America, where she taught many people Reiki, including a lady called Beth Grey. Beth Grey shared her knowledge with many many people, and had large amounts of people being initiated. She came to Australia, and shared her knowledge around here. Among the people she taught were Geoffrey and Sandra Sherwood. They are lovely people, and they are whom I got my attunment from.
If there are any people who have any knowledge of where their ?Reiki roots? come from, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I?ll add it here.
