He participated in the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1775. He was promoted to Colonel in 1776. He was captured by the British and held prisoner after the fall of Charleson in 1780. He was exchanged and rejoined the Continental Line. He was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. He was brevetted to the rank of Brigadier General. He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati and was serving in the Virginia legislature at the time of his death. Russell County, Virginia is named for him.
