An introduction to Phuket - Northern Route

Mai Khao Beach

Mai Khao or Airport Beach is the longest beach on Phuket, extending 9 km. from the northern end of the island to Nai Yang Beach on the west coast. It is here that from October to February giant sea turtles lumber ashore to lay eggs

Naiyang Beach

A national park shadowed by a fringe of casuarinas trees, it is an ideal place for picnics, swimming and snorkelling among sea anemones and fishes. It is also a good place to see turtles laying eggs in winter and to watch the release of turtles at the Songkran Festival in April.

Surin Beach

The best place to see the golden sunset of Phuket, where a nine-hole golf course is located, but one should not swim here because of the strong tide and waves and also because of the steep slope to the beach. One kilometre to the south of the beach is Sing Cape with sets of beautiful rock formations.

Kamala Beach

Just 6 km. north of Patong, it is the main beach of Kamala Bay area which includes the well-known Laem Sing and Surin Beach in addition to a handful of almost unknown sandy coves accessible only by rough tracks. Kamala is the only major beach in Phuket that does not have extensive hotel development and thus retains all its Thai village charm. The area is also the home of two or three low-rise up-market resort properties, unobtrusively woven into the village fabric.

Wat Phra Nang Sang

is also an important monastery of the province. Inside the old temple, there are 3 historically valued bronze heads of Buddha images recently discovered, estimated to be over a thousand years old. Interested visitors can ask for permission from the abbot to go inside the temple which is usually closed.

Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Park

It is the only perfectly preserved rain forest in Phuket where people can encamp and experience outdoor life all year round. The place is fascinating with many kinds of wild animals, hundreds of species of birds, thousands of different types of plant life, and a lovely cascade called Ton Sai, which is shadowed by trees hundreds of years old. Guides are available for trekking over several different routes.

Wat Pra Thong

For the people in Thalang, Wat Pra Thong is the most important Buddhist monastery, enshrining a most revered Buddha image called "Pra Thong", meaning the Gold Buddha. Inside the temple area is a museum, whose collection of historical objects includes a rain-coat worn by miners at the time when tin mining on the island was flourishing. This kind of rain-coat can be found nowhere else in Thailand. Also exhibited here is the smallest pair of shoes of Thailand worn by a Chinese woman immigrant who practiced foot-binding.
