ONCE AGAIN FERRARI START ON A GOOD NOTE WINNING THE FIRST F1 GRAND PRIX THE FIRST OF THE 17 TRACK SEASON!! | SO FERRARI WELL DONE!!!! WELL DONE M SCHUMACHER!!!! SCHUMACHER WINS IN AUSTRALIA It was Ferrari's day in Melbourne as Michael Schumacher took his first victory in the Antipodean sunshine. Taking over the lead at the expense of the two McLarens of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard which both retired with engine failure, he kept a massive lead over the Jordan of Heinz Harald Frentzen until the Jordan driver was also forced out with gearbox problems.

Post Race Press Conference : Australia | QUESTION: Many congratulations, Michael, on winning this Australian race at your tenth attempt. With no points for McLaren, and with your brother in third place, you must be delighted. MICHEAL SCHUMACHER: Certainly. 'Delighted' is probably the wrong word. Imagine how long it has been for Ferrari: this is the fifth time we have tried to win this Australian Grand Prix and to be competitive from the beginning of the season. But somehow, immediately I got into my new car I felt it was the car to do it with, and to be able to fight right from the beginning of the championship. Obviously there was a little disappointment yesterday, because we were not able to get the full potential out of it. I myself wasn't too worried, though, and today's result has proved me right. I give thanks to the guys for the fantastic job they have done, not just because the car has been so reliable but because it is so bloody fast. I am really delighted to be driving this car. QUESTION: Even when you were behind the two McLarens you seemed to be in total control. Was that the case? MICHEAL SCHUMACHER: Yes. I was already driving pretty easy from the beginning. I was saving my tyres, saving my fuel, ready for the final moment when the pit stops came and I had to attack. That was my strategy and it worked fine. Unfortunately the two guys in front of me broke down. I would have preferred to race them to the end, to prove how really good we are. But I think there will be plenty of opportunities for us to do this again all through this year. EDDIE IRVINE'S LIFE STYLE CRISES: Eddie Irvine is finding life at Jaguar is playing havoc with his social life, not to mention his racing. The maverick Irishman was ruminating on life in his new surroundings the other day, commenting that he seems to spend more time at sponsor promotions than on track in his new Jaguar. FORMULA 1 TO STAY ON AFTER AUSSIE GP VISITORS SUCCESS: Michael Schumacher's victory ahead of Ferrari's new boy Rubens Barrichello, was the German's 36th Formula1 win and Ferrari's first one-two in the opening round of the FIA Formula1 World Championship since 1953. Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi had scored the first double for the marque in the Argentine Grand Prix back then. BMW DELIGHTED WITH FIRST RACE OUTING: For a short while on lap 47, with only 11 circuits to go until the end of the Australian Grand Prix, the BMW powered Williams of Ralf Schumacher and Jenson Button were in third and sixth places. At first glance one could conceivably think that there was little significance in that but when further examination reveals that the Bavarian engine manufacturer has been away from Formula1 for thirteen years, and that 20 year old Button had yet to complete his first 200 miles in competition for the team, it looked to be quite an achievement.
