May 19 - May 21, 2000 X-Trials St. Petersburg, FL We will be competing at the same venue as 1998, the Dolphin Parking Lot and Spa Beach Mole at The Pier. Most staff will again be staying at the Hilton-St. Petersburg, about 6 blocks from the venue. We?ve blocked rooms for competitors at the Heritage Holiday Inn, about 3 blocks from the venue. At the present time, there are no additional rooms at the Hilton. Please note that Skateboarding is illegal on downtown streets and sidewalks (In 1998, the city council repealed this legislation for our event; however, local officials found the legislation became very difficult to enforce after our event was over. For the 2000 event, the legislation will NOT be repealed.) As always, I know all of you will be respectful of local laws. Please keep in mind, as a result of our event in St. Pete in 1998, the city paid for and built a skate park for local residents! There are shuttles, called the Looper, from the hotel to The Pier. These shuttles run very frequently and will provide relief to anyone who prefers not to walk from the hotel. If you choose to skateboard to the event, you will most likely receive a warning the first time and a fine the second time. Most staff will stay at the Renaissance Hotel, about 8 blocks from the venue. Rooms are available for athletes at this hotel too. Please make all reservations by May 15. Skateboarding is not addressed in the city ordinances; however, there is pending legislation to ban in-line skating and roller skating in the downtown area. If this passes, it will most likely include skateboarding as well. At this point, it does not appear this legislation would be passed before our event in June. Therefore, this is a great opportunity for us to put our best foot forward ? to show common courtesy, to be respectful of local landscaping and set the standard for skateboarding and pedestrians to share common space without posing a safety or vandalism concern.
