Embroidery of Suzhou is of superb quality. The finest of silk thread is used to produce the embroidery in the workshops of Suzhou, by talented embroiderers. Embroidery of Suzhou is much prized by the Chinese, worldwide.
Embroidery of the Emperors' silk gowns, was carried out by skilled embroiderers and the same embroidery skills are being used in the workshops of Suzhou at the present time, and is highly valued by Chinese people. Embroidery of almost transparent silk screens, which are completely reversible, is one of the recognised features of such products from this Chinese town. Horses, cats, dogs are some of the animal subjects, and the end result is almost lifelike. This high standard work requires a great deal of attention to the embroiderers eyes, so their work periods are very short. There are many examples of their work on show in the adjacent shop; different sized screens and finished masterpieces on white silk, which are not framed so not much luggage space is taken up when you buy any of them.
Take a cruise down the Grand Canal to Wuxi town and you can see the raw silk being processed in another workshop, with specimen silk worms weaving their cocoons; silk being spun and woven, and examples of superb silk robes and modern style dresses.
