Journey From Longzhou: Breakfast Of Noodles, Pork, Vegetables And Soup: Ping Xiang Chinese Friendship Gate: Driver On Scooter Fetches Mechanic.

July, 1993
The journey from Tongmu eventually continued and when the traffic started to move on the road, we soon found out the cause of the log jamb in which we had been stuck for nearly one hour. The journey from Tongmu had been halted when apparently two lorries had attempted to pass each other on a narrow bridge and one lorry had crashed into the low wall, so that neither lorry could move. Traffic approaching both sides of the bridge was quickly brought to a standstill, without any suitable diversion, testing the patience of the drivers and passengers. A similar situation developed when we went to Ping Xiang, a Chinese-Vietnamese border town.

The journey actually started in Longzhou, and I arrived there via Nanning and Fusui to stay with Zhongs family. Our driver with his minibus turned up at the flat 7.30 am, on a day that promised to be hot and sunny, joined us for breakfast of noodles, pork, vegetables and soup, but when we got into the minibus the engine would not start. The driver borrowed Zhongs scooter to fetch a mechanic who came and used some magic emery cloth, then there were cheers as the engine sprang into life.
