Supporting Pillars Of Bridge; View From Observation Building Entrance Dwarfed People. Cleaning Lady With Wooden Buckets On Trolley.
August, 1987
The supporting pillars of the land based part of the bridge, from the entrance steps of the tower, looked like the nave of a modern cathedral with the view disappearing in the distance. The supporting pillars dwarfed the walking people and how engineers start building a structure such as this is beyond my comprehension, so all I can do is stand back and enjoy the end result of their work. Their skills were acquired after many years of study, but the ordinary people have skills and talents of their own, passed down from generation to generation, and there is plenty of evidence of this on the streets, where we saw a cleaning lady pushing her two wooden buckets on a homemade trolley. Sure, the buckets would be very heavy, but they would last for years and were environmentally friendly.
Such items in my hometown, in this year 2000, would be sought after for use as garden tubs, but in China they would soon be replaced with plastic buckets, in a variety of colours and available in almost every market, and I wonder whether there are any Chinese craftsmen left now, who would be able to make a wooden one. Such is the price of progress but I am sure that the cleaning lady welcomed the arrival of the plastic bucket.
