A tough game for the Frankfurt Flamers came about but even the tough games are wins for the defending Super Bowl Champions thus far. With a close 13-9 win over the Jets, it seemed to be the first game where the Flamers would fall. The Jets opened the game with an 11-play drive leading to a 39 yd FG by Jets K John Hall. This marked the first time that the Flamers have trailed in a game this season (3-0). On the following possession for the Flamers, WR Nelly Sweeney continued a drought of catches with 2 dropped passes on consecutive plays, both of which would have been first downs. She came right back however, accounting for two catches for 20 total yards (13, 7 yds), along with two runs by RB Harold Currier for 36 total yards (29, 7 yds) on a drive early in the 2nd quarter to lead to K Pat McNeill tying the score with a long 46 yd FG to make it 3-3. on the 3rd possession after halftime for the Flamers, they capitilize for the lead on another 46 yd FG by McNeill. The Jets answered back on their next possession with a 43 yd FG form John Hall to make it 6-6 late in the 3rd. Hall in the 4th made another 43 yd FG with 2:14 left in the game. The Jets led the Flamers 9-6 with just over 2 minutes to go in the game, threatening to become the first team to defeat the Flamers in their last 8 games including playoffs. QB Steve Marcucci threw 4 of 5 of the next plays for completions, one to WR James DeLuca for 21 yards, Sweeney for 23 yds, Hayden for 14 yds, and then with 2nd and 13 at the Jets 23 yard line, a 23 yd touchdown pass to Nelly Sweeney with :51 to go in the game, the Flamers now up 13-9, going on to win. On the defensive side, the Flamers got to Jets QB Vinny Testaverde like they do to every opposing QB. The sacked Testaverde a whopping 18 times! This includes 4 from S Mike Kittredge, 3 from LB Bryce Read, and 5 sacks from DT Kristjan Justesen, who leads the league with 18 already, and captured the defensive MVP for the game vs the Jets. Kittredge (12), DeLuca (11), and CB Lauren Byrne (9) combined for 32 open field tackles, while Byrne leads the team in tackles with 48. Despite dropping 6 crucial passes in the game, Nelly Sweeney walked away with the game MVP, with 9 catches for 144 yards, and a TD, the game-winning score. The Flamers are now 5-0, with a 2 game lead over the tied Bills and Jets in the AFC East. Only Dallas and the Flamers have a 5-0 record in the NFL.
