Flamers Become First Ever 16-0 Team, Advance to 2nd Straight Super Bowl
Tuesday, December 19, 2000
The big story now is that the Flamers, now 16-0 for the season after defeating the Buffalo Bills 21-14 in Week 17. There were however many records that could have been broken in this game that will remain untouched. These records include Nelly Sweeney's TDs for the year, falling one short of Jerry Rice's record of 22. Also, Steve Marcucci fell merely 92 yards short of 5,000 passing for the year, and Harold Currier ended the year with 19 rushing TDs. One more TD would have made him only the 4th player in history to run for 20 in a season. The Flamers earned a first round bye in the playoffs, and hosted Pittsburgh in the AFC Divisional Playoff, winning 28-0 in a both offensive and defensive showdown. The Flamers then hosted Tennessee, winning in a more difficult game 33-20, a game where Nelly Sweeney continued her unbelievable season, catching for 275 yards and 4 TDs in the AFC Championship Game (the game for the right to play in the Super Bowl). The Super Bowl will be on Saturday, December 30th, at 6:30PM against Dallas.
