Europe TripVenice I didn't enjoy nearly as much as Vienna. Possibly it might have something to do with the fact that it's absolutely impossible not to get lost there in the criss-cross network of narrow alleyways. Also, I had to spend one night in a hotel because the hostel was booked up, and that cost me £80. Most irritating. Plus, it was very crowded, full of romantic couples and quite expensive. However, there's no doubting the unique dilapidated beauty of the place, and I'm certain a romantic weekend away here would be very enjoyable. Around every corner, there's a gorgeous photo opportunity. Brightly coloured, rustic-looking houses sitting alongside canals, in scenes that might have remained unchanged for centuries. The one must-see place there is the San Marco square (above), where the Basilica is. Fantastically beautiful on the outside; sadly it was so busy, I didn't get to go inside. Very friendly pidgeons there too. This photo is so typical of the waterways that criss-cross the city. By the time I left, I realised that the best way to appreciate Venice is simply to wander around and get lost. Get away from the crowds. Once I had done that, it was actually quite pleasant. |
