WHAT IS LINKWARE?
-
Linkware means providing a link back
to the site from where a graphic was downloaded. It is not just good enough
to place the logo of the creator on your site. Make sure that the logo
is linked back correctly. There is nothing worse than a visitor reaching
a dead end or one of those annoying "incorrect URL - page not found" pages.
If you don't provide the correct link you are not abiding by the terms
of use or conditions of the creator.
-
Linkware DOES NOT mean linking direct
to a graphic on someone else's server. All linkware graphics should be
downloaded to your hard drive and then uploaded to your own server.
-
So, you haven't started your page yet
and you're just downloading whatever takes your fancy? This is fine, providing
that you make a note of who the graphics belong to. It is extremely frustrating
to finally decide on the set or graphics to use, only to find that you
don't know who created it.
-
Most graphic/web designers are quite
proficient in browsing the web and will eventually find the site using
their graphics without a link. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
-
Give credit where it is due. Don't claim
someone else's work as your own. Many graphic designers have digitally
marked their work.
