WHO IS GARY

gary

Hi there, my name is Gary and I am 14 years old. I am in Year 9 at High School and I was fortunate enough to win a Scholarship for Citizenship and Academics.smiley.gif I was the *School Captain* and a member of the Student Representative Council in primary school and I have been elected as a member at my high school for the last 3 years.

I learned the basics of chess when I was about 6 years old and when I was in second class ( year 2 ), I began to play in the interschool competition. During my last 2 years at primary school I played on board 1 as the top player for our team. Somewhere during that time I became a member of the NSW Junior Chess Club.

In the main town near where I live, there is a shopping mall that has the large tiled chess board on the pavement, and a long wall that you can sit on with chess boards on it as well. Many adults gather there to play. During one lot of school holidays when I was about 10 years old I was watching the adults play when my mum went over and asked some of them if they would give me a game. At first they seemed to hesitate and asked "Can he play chess?" my chess board There was one man who said yes he would give me a game, his name was Milenko. We played several games that day and over the school holiday period we played many more. Milenko became my coach, my friend and my adopted grandfather. He has been with me at all my competitions and helps me analyse every game when it's over. The picture on the right is the board and the chess pieces that Milenko hand carved as a gift for me.
Thank you Milenko!

I play Competition Chess, my current rating is Australian Junior 912. I won the City of Sydney 1999 under 15 years Championships after playing 11 games. My final score was 10.5 / 11. I had one draw which gave me the half point, but I was undefeated. I received a $60 voucher for my win and I get my trophy at the end of this year. gary playing chess I now have an Australian Adult rating of 1673. NSW Chess Federation
I played in the Adult 1999 State Championships, under 1800 division. The games were 90 minutes each and the competition went for 9 weeks. I entered into the higher level (1800) instead of the lower division (1500) to gain experience. (my rating was 1490 at the start of that comp) The games have finished now and I ended up with Win 2, Lost 2, Draw 5. I have just finished playing in the Sydney Adult Championships 2000. I played in the higher OPEN level and ended up with D-L-L-W-W-W-L-W-W. I won first prize of $150 for best results under 1650 rating. (my rating was under 1650 at the start of the tournament) You can find the Australian Chess Federation Ratings at this site. I also played in a Junior tournament over the Easter school holidays and came second with 8.5 / 10. The week before that I won first place in the High Schools Chess competition.

I am also a member of The Internet Chess Club just click on the "Download ICC Software" link. It will give you complete step-by-step instructions for downloading the free software that you use to play games. Get "Blitzin" if you have a PC. Then run Blitzin and enter as a guest, just type "seek" to get a game.

My other interest is Cricket. Our team won the Grand Final for 1998. This year we made it to the Semi Finals, but there is always next year!! My mum says that my room is starting to overflow with trophies from both Chess and Cricket.smiley.gif
