Frequently Asked Questions about parrots.
Question: I really love conures, and I fell in love with this beautiful sun conure. I would love to buy him, but my husband gets very bad headaches and I don't want a screewaching parrot. I have heard that some conures can scream pretty bad, and I was wondering if sun conures were some of them.

Answer: I know exactly how you feel. I fell in love with a conure at the pet store once, but my mom said that I couldn't get it because they were too loud. Many other people have come to me with this same question. Conures can be very loud birds. Some of them are quiet, but the majority of them are screamers. Now, of course, some birds of a loud species can be quiet. i know a nanday conure that never screamed.

Question: I have had Maxine, my double-yellowhead amazon for two years now, and she has started to scream a lot. She screams in the morning, in the daytime-all of the time. It is very annoying and I wish that she would stop. What should I do?
Answer: I have had lots of people ask me that question. I have never been in this situation, but I can tell you that it may take some work to get Maxine to stop screaming. By now, she has learned that screaming gets her the attention she wants, so she will keep using this trick unless you wok with her. Now, first of all, amazons usually do scream in the morning. It is instictive, but I can tell you how to get her to stop screaming during the rest of the day. It is important that whenever she screams, you do not rush to her cage to get her out. By doing that, you are giving her just what she wanted-attention. But, since she obviously needs some attention, you still shouldn’t ignore her. You should wait a few minutes and then go to her cage and take her out. This should work, but it may be awhile before she learns that screaming isn’t the way to get attention.

Question: I want to get a parrot, but I don’t know which kind I should get. I want a small one that can talk and doesn’t scream.
Answer: Well, there are a lot of options for you. You may want to consider one of the quieter conures, because they can be very affectionate. Also, a pionus would be a good bird. They are sweet and quiet, and cost anywhere from $250-$500. Also, a little bit smaller, are cockatiels. You could also consider a Piocephalus parrot. They are very sweet and playful. I would recommend checking out a parrot book from the library that gives descriptions of the birds. It is important that you do a lot of research before choosing your bird.

Question: This is sort of embarrassing, but my sun conure has learned an inappropriate word! I was just sitting down in the living room, and he said it. I was shocked. I can’t let him go on saying this to all of the strangers he meets, so how do I get him to stop?
Answer: Well, it may be difficult, but I know of a way to get him to stop. Birds often say the words they know to get attention. So, if you always pretend not to notice when he says it, he will realize that saying it is just a waste of his time. Also, try blocking out what he is saying by interrupting him. That way, he cannot be heard, and he won’t be able to get the attention he wants. This may take a while for him to learn, but it will probably work.
