In 1991 I returned to Scotland only for a few
days together with my friend who came with me in 1984
and with my wife, who first was here in 1988.
We went to Fort William where we could get no space in the Youth Hostel.
We did not want to use the tent I carried along, as from our tour in 1984
Ralf and I remembered that weather could be very unsteady in Glen Nevis.
So we rented the Bunkhouse on the edge of the ben and on the other side
of Craig Nevis. The house was seemingly very old and so just functional
but not comfortable. During the night a mouse bit itself through a bag
and ate some of the cheese within. Fascinating. But the weather carried
on to be unsteady so on sunday, after two nights with the West Highland
Museum being closed and the Ben being hidden in clouds we went off to Loch
Lochy.
There we stayed in the Youth Hostel where
we met an American who told me his grandfather came from Germany. To the
question of the whereabouts he answered Vienna. Now so much for the American's
knowledge of the extent and location of Germany. From Loch Lochy Youth
Hostel we went to Laggan Locks, where there used to be a cafe in 1991 still.
We walked along Loch Lochy and hiked past Loch Oich and the Bridge of Oich
(which has in 1992 or 1993 been painted) along the Caledonian Canal to
Fort Augustus on the western edge of Loch Ness. Sibylle's account of the
site was "a bit disappointing". That was the third and last hike from Loch
Lochy to Loch Ness for me then.
We decided that the Isle of Skye was out of
range for us and went southwards to Balloch and stayed in the Loch Lomond
Youth Hostel (a former castle), where we met with a camera team working
for the soap opera "Take the High Road". For dinner we went to the "Grey
