NET SCULPTURES
Gunnar Simonsson - a short introduction.
I was born in Blekinge, close to the town of Karlskrona,
but have lived in Stockholm since 1972.
Early in life I realised that art, especially three-dimensional
art, was something special to me. After several years of effort,
I succeeded in producing a method for creating three-dimensional
”pictures” in close-meshed wire cloth (metal gauze). That
was approximately 33 years ago. Since then, I have made a few now
and then, as I have for a long time held a very interesting position
as Design Manager in a company which designs measuring instruments
within the environmental sector.
In this capacity, I have often had an outlet for my creative
interests in combination with finding construction solutions, where
a perception for form and logistical function has been a priority.
No new products have any degree of success without these
characteristics.
The net steelmesh sculptures are
formed entirely by hand. No tools or moulds have been used to create
the three-dimensional pieces.
When creating these pieces, my mind is concerned with the
play of shadows and harmonic balance. My hands work with a will
of their own. The touch of the fingers is at least as important as
the visual impression for attaining the outer contours and volatile
effects in the net’s bar pattern. However, the contours should not
be too obvious as art only first becomes art via the eye of the
beholder.
My interest in art has grown so strongly over the past five
years that I have been unable to stop my creative drive. It gives
me total relaxation and harmony.
I am a member of the Vantörs art association, Stockholm.
